Cadillac put a V-16 into a production car in 1930; decades later, Bugatti made a very different 16-cylinder layout—the W16—the centerpiece of the Veyron and Chiron. The names are not interchangeable: V-16 describes cylinders arranged in two banks, while Bugatti’s W16 is a compact, multi-bank design. Bugatti’s Tourbillon then brought the V16 layout back in a naturally aspirated hybrid powertrain.
What makes a V-16 different from a W16?
Both layouts use sixteen cylinders, but the shared count does not make them the same engine architecture. A V-16 has two cylinder banks arranged in a V around a shared crankshaft. The Cadillac design used two independently operating straight-eight banks joined by a crankshaft and crankcase, according to the Museum of American Speed.
Bugatti’s W16 is a specific compact arrangement, not a universal template for every engine that might be called a W16. Bugatti describes it as two VR8-derived units, with two eight-cylinder blocks set at 90 degrees; within each unit, the cylinder banks are separated by 15 degrees. The design allowed sixteen cylinders to fit in a hypercar package, and Bugatti paired it with four turbochargers.
Cadillac’s V-16 arrived in 1930
A luxury car for a narrow market
Cadillac introduced a production V-16 automobile in 1930. General Motors’ heritage account describes the 1931 model as an individually specified luxury car, offering ten basic body styles as well as coachbuilt bodies. Its stated price was $6,500, and the 1929 stock-market crash had already diminished the pool of customers for such an expensive car. General Motors Heritage Collection

Two horsepower figures, not one settled answer
Published figures for the early 452-cubic-inch Cadillac V-16 conflict. General Motors gives 165 horsepower for the 1931 car. The Museum of American Speed describes the Series 452 engine as producing 185 bhp and records 3,878 Series 452 V-16s built. Those figures should remain attributed to their respective sources rather than combined into a single agreed specification. Museum of American Speed
The Cadillac V-16 belongs to a different automotive moment from Bugatti’s later engine: it was an elaborate luxury-car offering whose exclusivity mattered as much as its cylinder count. It was not the beginning of a straight line toward the modern hypercar W16.

How Volkswagen Group’s W16 became a Bugatti engine
From an 18-cylinder idea to the Veyron
Bugatti traces the W16’s origins to a 1997 idea from Ferdinand Piëch for an 18-cylinder engine. Volkswagen engineers developed that concept into the W16 used in the Veyron. Bugatti says the production engine combined two VR8-derived units in a compact package and used four turbochargers. The Veyron’s 8.0-liter engine was announced at 1,001 PS and 1,250 Nm. Bugatti Newsroom, 2020
Bugatti says the W16 made its production debut in the Veyron in 2005 at 1,001 PS. The engineering task was not just to produce a large power figure, but to make that output usable in a road car. Gregor Gries, Bugatti’s former Head of Technical Development, recalled the ambition: “At the time, no one really believed there could be a vehicle for the road that boasted 1,000 PS. We wanted to prove we could construct an engine that was not only powerful, but also manageable.”

Chiron: more power, continued development
For the Chiron, Bugatti retained the 8.0-liter, four-turbo W16 layout while revising components. The company reports 1,500 PS for the Chiron and 1,600 PS for certain later versions. It also reports 16,000 hours of Chiron engine development running and more than 500,000 vehicle test kilometers; these are Bugatti’s own development figures, not independent test results. Bugatti Newsroom, 2022
Power delivery and vehicle control were part of the challenge. Karl-Heinz Neumann, formerly Head of Engine Development at Volkswagen, described the difficulty this way: “One thing proved to be a particular headache – the car had to stay grounded, its power had to stay on the road – which isn’t easy at these speeds.” Bugatti’s accounts also describe bespoke test systems and ion-current monitoring as part of the W16 development effort.

Why the W16 and V-16 belong to different stories
A cylinder count alone does not explain what these engines were built to do. Cadillac’s V-16 was a high-end engine in an individually specified luxury car during the Depression era. Bugatti’s W16 was designed for compact packaging and very high output in modern hypercars, with turbocharging and substantial engineering attention to cooling and dependable operation.
| Engine | Arrangement and induction | Automotive role |
|---|---|---|
| Cadillac V-16 | Two straight-eight banks sharing a crankshaft and crankcase; horsepower figures differ by source. | 1930s luxury automobile, with individually specified and coachbuilt body options. |
| Bugatti W16 | Bugatti’s compact, two-unit arrangement with four turbochargers; 8.0 liters in Veyron and Chiron applications. | Modern hypercar engine, developed for high output within a compact package. |
| Bugatti Tourbillon V16 | Naturally aspirated V16 paired with an electric powertrain. | A new powertrain context, distinct from the marque’s preceding W16 era. |
Tourbillon: Bugatti returns to a V16 layout
Bugatti’s Tourbillon is a useful epilogue to the W16 story. The car’s powertrain pairs a naturally aspirated V16 with an electric powertrain, rather than continuing the four-turbo W16 arrangement. Bugatti states a 9,000-rpm figure for the V16. Its 2026 account focuses on sound development, so it should not be treated as a complete source for the car’s production status or every specification. Romain Volatier, Bugatti’s Head of NVH & Acoustics, said the sound team wanted to retain a raw quality: “Bugatti, from a sound perspective, has never had a very clean-sounding engine. It has always been a little bit dirty and raw, so we decided to keep that as one of the key points of the sound.” He also described the road-legal sound work as a balancing act: “The car needs to be legal, but the real challenge is to make it legal and still sound good.”
The sequence is striking without being a direct engineering lineage: Cadillac’s V-16 made sixteen cylinders a luxury-car statement in 1930; Bugatti’s W16 turned a different layout into a defining feature of the Veyron and Chiron; Tourbillon returns to a V16, now combined with electric drive.
