Both appear on the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) 2025 Top Safety Pick list. That makes each a serious safety choice, but it does not prove either is a “bargain.” No verified pricing or equipment-adjusted comparison establishes the value claim.
Here is what the IIHS results actually support, which model years and build dates they cover, and how to check a vehicle before treating a safety award as a buying advantage.

What the 2025 IIHS awards say about these Kia SUVs
IIHS awards are assigned within vehicle-size categories for a particular model year. They are not a universal ranking of every vehicle on sale. IIHS explicitly cautions that larger, heavier vehicles generally provide more occupant protection than smaller, lighter vehicles. Therefore, a Top Safety Pick award tells you that a vehicle performed well against the institute’s criteria for its class; it does not mean a small SUV offers the same crash protection as a midsize SUV.

The two relevant 2025 Kia entries are listed on the institute’s official pages: the 2025 Kia Sportage and the 2025 Kia Sorento. Their published results are summarized below.

The table is not a trim-by-trim equipment chart. IIHS ratings can depend on the tested configuration and on whether a crash-avoidance system is standard or optional, so a buyer should verify the exact vehicle rather than assume every used or inventory unit has identical equipment.
2025 Kia Sportage: the test scope behind its Top Safety Pick
Model years covered by the results
The Sportage’s small-overlap front result applies to 2023–2026 models. Its updated side result applies to 2024–2026 models. Those ranges are printed on the IIHS rating page and are more useful than simply seeing “2025” in a vehicle advertisement: they identify which model years can rely on the same published test result.
How the tests were performed
IIHS conducted the updated side test on a 2024 Sportage. The small-overlap result was not generated by a fresh 2025 Sportage crash; it comes from a 2022 Hyundai Tucson test conducted by Hyundai/Kia and applied to the Sportage. That carry-over is legitimate only within the model-year scope IIHS specifies. It should not be generalized to an unrelated Kia or to a Sportage outside that range.
What the ratings mean for a buyer
A Good structural rating in the applicable crash tests indicates the tested occupant compartment and restraint performance met IIHS’s highest rating level for those tests. Acceptable headlights or pedestrian crash prevention are one level below Good, while the Marginal vehicle-to-vehicle front crash-prevention result signals meaningful room for improvement even though the feature is standard. “Standard” describes availability on the vehicle, not guaranteed performance in every road, weather or traffic situation.

2025 Kia Sorento: a strong side result but a build-date caveat
The updated moderate-overlap result
The Sorento’s 2025–26 updated moderate-overlap front rating is Marginal for vehicles built after July 2024 and before October 2025. A Sorento assembled outside that window should not automatically be assigned the same result without checking its IIHS listing and production information. The build-date language matters when shopping new-old stock or a used vehicle registered in a different calendar year.
Side-impact coverage
The Sorento’s updated side rating is Good and applies to 2024–2026 models. That broader range still does not erase the front-test limitation for the specified 2025–26 build window. Safety performance is a collection of separate tests, not one score that overrides every weaker result.
Comparing it with the Sportage fairly
The Sorento is classified as a midsize SUV and the Sportage as a small SUV. Because IIHS awards are made within size categories, comparing their award labels as if they were direct head-to-head rankings is inappropriate. A shopper deciding between them should first choose the size and passenger/cargo layout needed, then examine the relevant tests for the exact vehicle.

Do these ratings prove the Kia is a “bargain”?
No. The available IIHS material establishes safety ratings, test provenance and applicability dates, but it does not provide transaction prices, destination charges, incentives, insurance costs, maintenance costs or a comparison with similarly equipped alternatives. Without those inputs, “bargain” is a marketing proposition rather than a verified conclusion.

What a defensible value comparison would require
- The exact model year, trim, drivetrain and options being priced.
- A documented purchase price for the same region and date, including destination fees and mandatory charges.
- Comparable prices for competing small or midsize SUVs with similar powertrain, passenger capacity and driver-assistance equipment.
- Confirmation that the safety equipment being valued is standard on the quoted trim, not an unavailable or optional package.
- Ownership costs such as fuel, insurance, service and depreciation if the comparison is intended to cover more than the initial purchase.
Until those figures are assembled, it is accurate to call the Sportage and Sorento 2025 Top Safety Pick recipients, not to declare either one the safest bargain in its market.
2025 versus 2026: do not mix the award pages
IIHS’s award list separately identifies 2026 models that qualify for a higher Top Safety Pick+ designation under specific production cutoffs. A 2026 Sportage is listed as Top Safety Pick+ only for vehicles built after May 2025. A 2026 Sorento is listed as Top Safety Pick+ only for vehicles built after September 2025. Those entries are not upgrades that can be retroactively applied to every 2025 vehicle.
When a dealer advertisement says “Top Safety Pick+,” read the model year and build date together. A 2025 vehicle cannot be represented accurately by a 2026 award unless IIHS explicitly includes that vehicle in the same award entry. How to verify a specific Kia before buying
- Identify the vehicle precisely. Record the model name, model year, body style, trim, drivetrain and VIN. “Sportage” or “Sorento” alone is not enough.
- Check the production date. Use the certification label on the vehicle or the manufacturer’s VIN information. This is essential for the Sorento’s July 2024–before-October 2025 moderate-overlap scope and for the 2026 award cutoffs.
- Open the matching IIHS rating page. Confirm that the year and body style match the vehicle in front of you. Do not substitute a similarly named crossover or a different generation.
- Read each test separately. Look at small- or moderate-overlap front, updated side, headlights and crash-prevention categories. A Top Safety Pick label does not mean every individual test is Good.
- Verify standard equipment. The Sportage’s vehicle-to-vehicle front crash-prevention system is identified as standard on the 2025 rating. For any other feature, confirm the trim-level equipment list and the vehicle’s window sticker.
- Match the size category to your use. If you are comparing the small Sportage with the midsize Sorento, account for seating, cargo needs and the general protection advantage associated with greater vehicle mass before comparing prices.
- Document the price separately. Obtain a written, itemized quote and collect equivalent quotes for comparable vehicles. Safety-award status alone cannot establish value.
Common mistakes that lead to a bad safety comparison
Treating the award as a single overall score
Top Safety Pick is an award threshold based on multiple tests and equipment requirements. It does not replace the individual ratings. A vehicle can receive the award while still earning Acceptable or Marginal results in particular categories, as the 2025 entries demonstrate.

Ignoring carry-over tests
The Sportage’s small-overlap result comes from a 2022 Hyundai Tucson test conducted by Hyundai/Kia, while the side test used a 2024 Sportage. Both are applied by IIHS within stated model-year ranges. A buyer should understand that distinction rather than assume every result came from a 2025 vehicle.
Using a calendar year instead of a build date
Production cutoffs can divide vehicles sold under the same model year. This is especially important for the Sorento’s updated moderate-overlap result and for the 2026 Top Safety Pick+ entries.
Comparing across classes without stating the trade-off
A small-SUV award and a midsize-SUV award answer different questions. IIHS says larger, heavier vehicles generally afford more occupant protection, so class and mass belong in the decision alongside the letter-grade results.

A low advertised price may reflect a lower trim, fewer driver-assistance features, dealer fees, a temporary incentive or a different drivetrain. Compare like-for-like equipment and total cost before making a value claim.

Which interpretation of the headline is supportable?
If “this Kia SUV” means the 2025 Sportage, the supportable statement is that it is an IIHS Top Safety Pick with Good small-overlap and updated side results within specified model-year ranges, plus Acceptable headlights and pedestrian front crash prevention and a Marginal standard vehicle-to-vehicle front crash-prevention rating.
If it means the 2025 Sorento, the supportable statement is that it is also an IIHS Top Safety Pick with a Good updated side result, while the updated moderate-overlap front result is Marginal for the stated production window. Neither interpretation supplies the missing price evidence needed to call the vehicle a bargain.
The practical conclusion is to treat the award as a starting filter, not a purchase verdict. Confirm the exact build, inspect every applicable test, select the size that fits your occupants and cargo, and then perform a separate, documented price comparison.
