Holden’s Australian manufacturing ended in 2017; General Motors announced the brand’s retirement in 2020. The two milestones were years apart. Holden began as an Adelaide saddlery in 1856, grew into a defining name in Australian motoring, and ultimately gave way to a smaller GM presence focused on specialty vehicles. The evidence supports that broad shift, but not the claim that GMSV is a complete replacement for Holden.
How a saddlery became a carmaker
Holden began in Adelaide in 1856 as a saddlery. During the First World War, trade restrictions and growing demand for motor vehicles helped Holden & Frost expand into large-scale motor-body production. The company built bodies for multiple vehicle makers, as well as for trucks, trams, buses and railway vehicles.
By 1923, Holden’s Motor Body Builders was producing more than half of Australia’s car bodies and had become General Motors’ exclusive Australian car-body supplier, according to the State Library of South Australia’s Holden history. Holden merged with GM in 1931, a step in the company’s shift from body builder to the Australian arm of a global automaker.
The first production Holden
On 29 November 1948, the first production Holden rolled off the assembly line at Fisherman’s Bend in Victoria. The National Museum of Australia describes the launch as a milestone in manufacturing: Australia’s first locally made mass-production car. Holden was marketed as “Australia’s own car,” and for many Australians a Holden was their first car.

Why Holden became an Australian icon
Holden’s reach was more than a matter of nostalgia. The National Museum of Australia reports that Holden accounted for 43 per cent of total Australian car sales in 1958. By 1960, one million Holdens had been sold; the museum says another million followed over the next six years. These are historical figures, not a measure of current sales or ownership.
Individual models helped define that presence. The Monaro arrived in 1968. Holden’s heritage account says the HT, which replaced the HK in 1969, featured Holden’s first Australian-developed V8 engine. The Commodore later became a long-running model series: Holden’s heritage history describes 14 models across 30 years, while ABC reported it had been Australia’s best-selling car for 15 consecutive years.

That cultural identity rested on a substantial industrial base. Holden built vehicles and engines in Australia, supported jobs and supplier networks, and connected car ownership with local production. The scale of that history is also visible in the engine works: the State Library records 1,137,282 HFV6 engines produced, including 437,000 exported, before engine production ended in 2016.
Manufacturing ended before the Holden brand did
Holden’s decline was not one event. GMH announced in 2013 that it would cease Australian manufacturing operations. The final Holden engine was made at Fisherman’s Bend on 29 November 2016, after 76 years of engine manufacture, and that plant closed. Australian vehicle production ended later: the Elizabeth factory closed on 20 October 2017. The National Museum of Australia says its Calais was among the last cars off the line.

GM did not announce Holden’s brand retirement until 17 February 2020. It said sales, design and engineering operations in Australia and New Zealand would be wound down by 2021. ABC reported at the time that about 1.6 million Holdens were in circulation; that was a contemporary estimate, not a current fleet count.
Why GM retired Holden
In its 2020 announcement, GM said the case for further investment had weakened because of the fragmented right-hand-drive market, the economics of supporting the Holden brand, its limited geographic scale and the need to meet an investment-return threshold. GM also said Australia and New Zealand represented less than one per cent of the global automotive industry. Those points describe GM’s stated business rationale; they are not, by themselves, an exhaustive independent account of every cause behind Holden’s end.
The decision exposed a tension between two different measures of value. Locally, Holden stood for manufacturing capability, employment and a distinct national motoring identity. For GM, the question was whether a geographically limited, fragmented market could justify the investment required to sustain the brand. ABC’s contemporaneous coverage recorded political criticism and the impact on workers and dealers, alongside GM’s plans to focus on specialty vehicles. Those reactions should be distinguished from the company’s own explanation.

In its announcement on 17 February 2020, Holden promised to honour existing warranties and provide aftersales support for at least 10 years. It said that support would include service, spare parts and any required recall or field action. This was the company’s announcement-era commitment; it does not establish that a particular dealer, part or repair service is available now.

Owners who need help should check their vehicle and location with the relevant service provider. Holden’s announcement page also set out questions owners commonly need answered, including where to get a Holden serviced, whether a warranty would be honoured, how long parts would be provided and what would happen in a recall.
Is GMSV Holden’s rebirth?
Only in a limited sense. ABC reported in February 2020 that GM would focus on specialty vehicles in Australia and New Zealand. That supports describing GMSV as part of GM’s post-Holden shift toward specialty vehicles, but it does not establish that GMSV is a full replacement for Holden or the successor to every part of Holden’s former business.
The available evidence here does not verify GMSV’s current lineup, service network, parts responsibilities or precise relationship to Holden’s aftersales operation. Holden’s 2020 announcement also left some future plans, including Corvette availability, to later updates. For a current model, service or parts question, seek confirmation from an appropriate provider rather than assuming Holden’s former arrangements transferred to GMSV.
