The Town of Normal lists the incident as a battery-pack fire. A contemporaneous report says the pack was in a repair area and being tested before thermal runaway began—but the available sources do not establish what started the failure or show that testing caused it.
What happened at Rivian’s Normal plant?
The Town of Normal’s archive records a May 28, 2022, incident titled “Normal Firefighters Respond to Battery Pack Fire at Rivian Automotive Plant,” with the entry time listed as 5:07 p.m. Town of Normal incident archive.
InsideEVs reported that the battery pack was in a repair area and undergoing testing when thermal runaway began. That describes the circumstances immediately before the event, not a confirmed explanation for why the pack failed. Is the cause of the fire known?
No specific root cause is established in the available sources. The Town’s archive confirms the incident but is not a final investigative report; the secondary report supplies testing context without resolving what initiated the thermal runaway. What does Rivian’s battery-fire guidance say?
Rivian’s June 10, 2024, R1S emergency-response guide is intended for emergency responders dealing with vehicle incidents. It says only firefighters should extinguish a high-voltage battery fire and calls for sustained, high-volume water application and thermal monitoring.
