How much does a Tesla battery replacement cost?
There are two very different answers: the price of a complete high-voltage battery from an independent specialist, and the vehicle-specific estimate Tesla prepares after diagnosing the car.

Published independent prices provide useful 2025 benchmarks, but they are not guaranteed out-the-door totals. Some listings exclude installation, taxes, towing, diagnosis, extra parts, or local labor. Tesla’s estimate depends on the vehicle identification number, model year, battery chemistry, pack size, drivetrain, parts availability, and the cause of the failure.

| Vehicle or battery | Published independent price | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 2021–2025 Model 3 | $7,999–$9,999 | Advertised as shop-install-only pricing |
| 2021–2025 Model Y | $7,999–$9,999 | Advertised as shop-install-only pricing |
| Model S/X, 75-kWh pack | $5,999 | Independent listing |
| Model S/X, 85-kWh pack | $9,999 | Independent listing |
| Model S/X, 90-kWh pack | $11,999 | Independent listing |
| Model S/X, 100-kWh pack | $15,500 | Independent listing |
These figures come from Greentec Auto’s Tesla battery listings, which label the prices “Shop Install Only.” They should be treated as benchmarks, not universal Tesla repair prices.
Another independent recycler, Calimotive, advertises lower prices for certain used or remanufactured packs:
- Model 3 Standard Range: $4,000
- Model 3 Standard Range Plus with LFP battery: $5,500
- Model 3 or Model Y Long Range: $6,000
Calimotive advertises a two-year or 24,000-mile warranty, whichever comes first. Its prices are shop-specific and do not represent Tesla pricing.
A realistic out-of-warranty budget
For many Model 3 and Model Y repairs, an independent used or remanufactured replacement pack may fall roughly between $4,000 and $10,000, depending on the configuration and what the quote includes.
For larger Model S and Model X packs, published independent prices range from roughly $6,000 to $15,500. A quote between $13,000 and $18,000 can occur, particularly when it includes a large pack, labor, diagnosis, taxes, towing, or additional battery-system work. It is not, however, a universal 2025 Tesla price.
Ask every repairer to separate these line items:
- Battery pack price
- Installation labor
- Diagnostic labor
- Towing or transport
- Coolant and sealing materials
- Programming, calibration, or post-repair testing
- Taxes and shop fees
- Parts and labor warranty
What Tesla actually charges
Tesla does not provide a single retail price for replacing every Model 3, Model Y, Model S, or Model X battery. The company generates a vehicle-specific estimate after reviewing the service request and performing diagnostics.
To check the current estimate in the Tesla app:
- Open the Tesla app.
- Tap Service.
- Select the relevant service request.
- Tap View estimate.
Tesla may initially show a customer-pay charge before warranty coverage is confirmed. If an inspection establishes that the repair is covered, the charge should be removed. Tesla also says that updated work requires owner approval. See Tesla’s service-center estimate guidance.

A Tesla quote can be higher than an independent specialist’s quote, but online owner reports are anecdotal. They should not be presented as an official Tesla price list.
Warranty coverage can make the repair cost $0
Tesla’s current U.S. warranty page lists these high-voltage battery and drive-unit limits:
| Vehicle or trim | Time and mileage limit | Capacity provision |
|---|---|---|
| Model S, Model X, Cybertruck | 8 years or 150,000 miles | At least 70% retention |
| Model 3 RWD, Model Y RWD/AWD | 8 years or 100,000 miles | At least 70% retention |
| Model 3 Premium/Performance; Model Y Premium/Performance; Model Y L Premium Launch Series | 8 years or 120,000 miles | At least 70% retention |
The specific warranty document supplied with the vehicle controls. Older cars can have different terms, and the 70% figure does not mean Tesla automatically replaces every battery that displays less than exactly 70%. The claim must satisfy the applicable time, mileage, diagnosis, and warranty conditions.
Check the vehicle’s coverage in the app by opening the home screen, scrolling to the bottom, and selecting Specs & Warranty > Warranty. Tesla’s vehicle warranty page is useful, but Tesla says its online summary is general information.
A warranty replacement also does not necessarily mean a brand-new battery. Recurrent reports that Tesla may provide a pack meeting the warranty requirement rather than guaranteeing a newly manufactured pack. Ask what type of pack will be installed and what warranty applies to the replacement.
Reduced range does not automatically mean a bad battery
Every lithium-ion battery loses some capacity with age, mileage, charging behavior, climate, and use. Gradual range loss is normal wear and tear; it is not, by itself, proof that the pack needs replacement.
On supported vehicles, Tesla provides a Battery Health feature. The touchscreen path is:

Controls > Service > Battery Health
The optional battery-health test requires:
- An AC charger supplying at least 5 kW
- Less than 20% state of charge
- The vehicle in Park
- No active battery or thermal-system alerts
- No pending software update
- Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity
The test can take up to 24 hours and may discharge the battery below 10%. It can also disable Sentry Mode and climate control during parts of the test. Some vehicles do not support the test, and an active warning can prevent it from starting or completing. If that happens, schedule service rather than treating the missing test as proof of battery failure.
The failure cause matters more than the headline price
Normal degradation
Slowly declining range is usually normal aging. Tesla’s parts warranty excludes gradual loss in operating performance caused by normal wear and tear. A battery that still operates normally but delivers less range than it did when new may not qualify for replacement.
Defective cells or internal faults
A defective cell, module, contactor, fuse, wiring component, or other internal fault may be repairable without replacing the entire pack. If the vehicle remains within the applicable battery warranty, the repair may be covered.
Tesla has published service procedures for replacing a high-voltage battery because of defective cell modules, demonstrating that some failures begin inside the pack rather than from general degradation. An independent EV specialist may also offer module-level diagnosis or repair, although the shop’s equipment, parts supply, and warranty matter.
Underbody impact or structural damage
A battery damaged by a road impact is a different situation from an internal defect. Tesla’s technical guidance identifies dents, holes, cracks, tears, corrosion, moisture, thermal-event evidence, coolant or electrolyte leakage, and rupture as conditions requiring inspection.
A visible open hole, crack, or tear in the enclosure can justify battery replacement, and Tesla says the vehicle should not be driven until the battery is replaced. Do not crawl under a damaged pack or attempt a high-voltage repair yourself. Tesla states that only Tesla Service Centers should attempt the repair described in its procedure. High-voltage systems present electrocution, fire, and thermal-event risks.
A failed low-voltage battery
Many alarming Tesla battery stories involve the separate low-voltage battery rather than the large propulsion pack. The low-voltage battery powers electronics and is a much smaller repair. It should not be compared with a $6,000–$15,500 high-voltage battery replacement.

Before approving a major repair, confirm whether the diagnosis concerns the:
- High-voltage propulsion battery: the large pack that powers the drive motors
- Low-voltage battery: the smaller battery that runs vehicle electronics
- Battery module or component: an internal section or part that may be repairable separately
How to avoid paying for a complete pack unnecessarily
- Check warranty coverage first. Use Specs & Warranty > Warranty in the Tesla app.
- Run Battery Health if available. Follow the charging, state-of-charge, and alert requirements.
- Request Tesla diagnostics. Open Service in the app and describe the warning, symptoms, and recent event.
- Read the written estimate. Confirm whether it calls for a new, remanufactured, or used pack.
- Get an EV-specialist comparison. Ask whether installation, towing, taxes, coolant work, calibration, and warranty are included.
- Do not drive after suspected impact damage. Have the vehicle inspected and transported safely.
A battery warning, a temporary power reduction, or lower displayed range is not enough information to justify a $15,000 purchase. The diagnosis should identify the failed component and explain why a complete pack is required.

FAQ
What is the average cost to replace a Tesla battery in 2025?
There is no single average Tesla price. Independent listings indicate roughly $4,000–$10,000 for many used or remanufactured Model 3 and Model Y packs, and about $6,000–$15,500 for listed Model S and Model X packs. Installation, taxes, towing, diagnosis, and other work may be extra.
Will Tesla replace my battery for free?
Possibly, if the high-voltage battery failure is covered by the vehicle’s specific battery and drive-unit warranty. Current U.S. limits are generally 8 years with mileage limits of 100,000, 120,000, or 150,000 miles depending on model and trim. Tesla must confirm the diagnosis and coverage.
Does reduced Tesla range mean the battery needs replacing?
No. Gradual capacity loss is normal. Use Controls > Service > Battery Health if the feature is available, then request a diagnostic evaluation if the test cannot run or the car shows battery or thermal-system alerts.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Can a Tesla battery be repaired instead of replaced?
Sometimes. A specialist may be able to diagnose or replace a module, contactor, fuse, wiring component, or another battery-system part. Severe impact damage, a compromised enclosure, structural-pack damage, or thermal damage can require a complete pack under Tesla’s safety procedures.
The Bottom Line
A Tesla high-voltage battery replacement in 2025 can cost roughly $4,000 to $15,500 through published independent listings, while a Tesla service-center estimate must be obtained for the specific vehicle. Check warranty coverage before authorizing work, distinguish normal degradation from a genuine fault, and make sure the quote explains whether the pack is new, remanufactured, or used and what the installation warranty includes.
