“Cheap” and “fast” mean different things in this list. A 2024 Ford Mustang may start at $33,515, but the 166-mph Dark Horse costs about $60,865 before options. Likewise, the $69,995 starting price of a 2024 Corvette Stingray does not mean every base car has the equipment associated with its 184-mph figure.
To keep the comparison consistent, this ranking uses published starting MSRPs for new U.S.-market 2023 and 2024 vehicles, before destination charges, taxes, dealer fees, options, incentives, and markups. The cars are ordered by their highest applicable claimed, tested, estimated, or electronically limited top speed—not by acceleration.

How this ranking works
The price columns distinguish between the least expensive version of the model and the version responsible for the listed top speed. That distinction matters: a base Challenger, Mustang, Camaro, or EV6 is not necessarily capable of the performance shown for its V-8, GT, ZL1, Dark Horse, or GT variant.
Top-speed figures also are not perfectly comparable. Some are manufacturer claims, some are electronic governor limits, and others are estimates or figures reported by Car and Driver. A governed 155-mph car and a drag-limited car with an estimated 155-mph maximum have not been measured in exactly the same way.

The fastest bargains are not the cheapest cars in the list
The headline numbers belong to expensive performance variants. The 203-mph Charger SRT Hellcat and roughly 199-mph Challenger SRT Hellcat are the quickest cars here by maximum speed, but neither is a low-$40,000 purchase. Their large supercharged V-8s, specialized cooling systems, brakes, tires, and driveline hardware explain much of the price.
The Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing is a more unusual value. At $62,890, it combines a 189-mph maximum with four doors and a twin-turbo V-6. It is still costly, and limited supply often pushed real transaction prices above MSRP, but its published price undercuts several lower-speed exotic or electrified performance cars.
The Camaro ZL1 and Corvette Stingray occupy different parts of the performance market. The ZL1 is the faster track-oriented Camaro, while the Stingray offers a mid-engine layout and a claimed maximum near 184 mph. The Corvette E-Ray adds all-wheel-drive traction and hybrid assistance, but its roughly $102,900 starting point makes it much less affordable than the regular Stingray.

Best lower-cost choices by type
- Cheapest serious V-8 performance: The 2023 Challenger R/T Scat Pack, with its 176-mph figure and tested base price around $46,590, is one of the clearest value picks. The model’s $34,395 range-start price applies to less powerful versions, not the Scat Pack.
- Cheapest high-speed front-wheel-drive car: The 2023 Civic Type R starts at $44,890 and is listed at 169 mph. It trades the muscle cars’ straight-line theater for a lighter, front-drive track setup and a manual transmission.
- Cheapest V-8 Mustang: The 2024 Mustang GT is listed at $44,090 in the cited testing configuration and is governed at 155 mph. The $33,515 Mustang starting price belongs to the broader range, not the GT.
- Cheapest new performance sedan: The 2024 Hyundai Elantra N starts around $34,850 and has an estimated 155-mph maximum. It is substantially less expensive than the BMW M240i xDrive while offering a similar headline speed.
- Cheapest lightweight sports cars: The Toyota GR86, Subaru BRZ, and Mazda MX-5 Miata sit near the bottom of the speed ranking, but their prices—roughly $28,985 to $31,315 at the low end—buy low weight, rear-wheel drive, and usable handling rather than extreme top speed.
- Cheapest all-wheel-drive performance hatchback: The GR Corolla starts around $36,100, while the WRX starts at $33,855. The Toyota has the higher estimated top speed, but the Subaru offers a lower entry price and a larger sedan body.
Important model-year and buying notes
Several cars are no longer current new-car choices
The 2023 model year was the final year for the previous gasoline Dodge Challenger and Charger generation. The 2024 Camaro was the final model year for the sixth-generation Camaro. These cars may appear in dealer inventories or the used market, but an advertised “new” example can carry a substantial scarcity premium.
The 2024 Golf GTI was also notable because it was the final U.S. model year with a six-speed manual transmission. Manual-equipped cars received the GTI 380 package, so buyers comparing prices should check whether a listing includes that equipment.
Do not confuse MSRP with the amount you will pay
Every price in the table is a published starting figure, not an out-the-door quote. Add destination, sales tax, registration, dealer documentation charges, options, and financing costs. For limited-performance cars—especially Hellcat models, Camaro ZL1s, CT4-V Blackwings, and some manual sports cars—dealer markups could be significant.

Top speed is not the same as acceleration
A car with a lower maximum speed can be much quicker in everyday driving. Electric motors can deliver immediate acceleration, while a tall-geared car may have a high theoretical maximum but take longer to reach it. This list deliberately ranks maximum speed because that is what the title asks for; it is not a ranking of 0–60-mph times, lap times, braking distance, or overall driving enjoyment.

Using model starting MSRP rather than the cost of the fastest version, the 2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata is the least expensive entry at approximately $28,985. The Toyota GR86 follows at about $30,435, with the Subaru BRZ at approximately $31,315. If the question is instead which car costs the least while delivering the highest speeds shown for its specific performance trim, the answer changes: the 2024 Hyundai Elantra N is about $34,850 with an estimated 155-mph top speed, while the 2023 Challenger R/T Scat Pack is the lowest-cost V-8 option with a much higher 176-mph figure.

Does the base model reach the listed top speed?
Not necessarily. The table identifies the exact performance version associated with each top-speed figure and separately shows the model’s entry price. A base Mustang, Challenger, Camaro, or EV6 can cost much less than the Dark Horse, Scat Pack, ZL1, or EV6 GT responsible for the listed speed.
