Chevrolet reports 1.68 seconds for the V8-hybrid 2026 Corvette ZR1X on a prepped surface. Those numbers are close, but they are not results from a controlled head-to-head test, and the conditions differ.
This ranked shortlist includes production road cars with a V8 as a propulsion source, including hybrid-assisted V8s, and orders their published claims numerically. Treat it as a comparison of manufacturer figures—not a definitive ranking of every V8 car ever made.
Quick comparison: manufacturer-reported 0–60 mph claims
| Rank | Car | Published 0–60 mph figure | Configuration and stated conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2023 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170 | 1.66 seconds | V8-only; Dodge ties peak output to high-ethanol fuel blends and specifies factory drag-radial tires. Full test-surface and timing-basis details are not stated in Dodge’s release. |
| 2 | 2026 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X | 1.68 seconds | V8-hybrid; Chevrolet reports this on a prepped surface, on pump gas, with standard-equipment tires and a production 50-state street-legal engine calibration. Available carbon-fiber wheels were fitted. |
| 3 | 2025 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 | 2.3 seconds with available ZTK; 2.5 seconds standard | V8-only; Chevrolet says both tests used 93-octane pump fuel on a non-prepped drag strip. ZTK adds Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2R tires. |
| 4 | 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 | 3 seconds | V8-only; Ford’s rounded claim. Its performance catalog describes the result less precisely as “mid-3.0 seconds.” |
| 5 | 2018 Ford Mustang GT | Under 4 seconds | V8-only; Ford’s claim is for Drag Strip mode, the available 10-speed automatic and available Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S tires in the Performance Pack. |
The ordering reflects the published numbers, not equivalent test conditions. In particular, the ZR1X’s 1.68-second prepped-surface result should not be read as a direct loss to the Demon 170’s 1.66-second claim: the sources do not establish a shared surface, instrumentation method or launch protocol.
1. 2023 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170: 1.66 seconds
Dodge says the production Demon 170 reaches 60 mph in 1.66 seconds, with 1,025 horsepower and 945 lb-ft of torque. The result comes with important qualifications: Dodge ties maximum power to high-ethanol fuel blends and says the car can produce 900 hp on E10. Its factory rear tires are 315/50R17 Mickey Thompson ET Street R drag radials; the fronts are Mickey Thompson 245/55R18 ET Street tires. Fuel, traction and launch setup are integral to understanding this claim, not incidental details. Dodge’s Demon 170 announcement also reports 2.004 g and an NHRA-certified 8.91-second quarter mile; those are separate performance figures, not the basis for independently verifying the 0–60 claim.

2. 2026 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X: 1.68 seconds on a prepped surface
The ZR1X combines a twin-turbo LT7 V8 with an electric front-axle motor for a total of 1,250 horsepower, making it the hybrid-assisted entry in this list. Chevrolet’s January 2026 release reports 1.68 seconds to 60 mph on a prepped surface. The same run produced an 8.675-second quarter mile at 159 mph. Chevrolet specifies pump gas, standard-equipment tires, a production 50-state street-legal engine calibration and available carbon-fiber wheels for the validation run. The release also says the test car made multiple consecutive quarter-mile runs under 8.8 seconds. Chevrolet’s ZR1X test release gives the run details; the model announcement describes its configuration and an earlier estimate.
Unprepped-surface figure: 1.89 seconds with ZTK
Chevrolet separately lists a 1.89-second 0–60 mph time for a ZR1X fitted with the available ZTK package on an unprepped surface. That is a different claim under a different traction condition from the 1.68-second prepped-surface run. The gap is a useful reminder that a launch figure measures not just engine output, but how effectively a particular car can put power down in the stated conditions.

3. 2025 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1: 2.3 seconds with ZTK, 2.5 seconds standard
The 2025 ZR1 uses a 5.5-liter twin-turbo LT7 V8. Chevrolet reports 2.3 seconds to 60 mph with the available ZTK package and 2.5 seconds in standard configuration. Both figures were achieved on a non-prepped drag strip using 93-octane pump fuel; Chevrolet says the measurement is based on initial vehicle movement on a closed course. The ZTK-equipped car uses Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2R tires. See Chevrolet’s ZR1 announcement for its stated test conditions.
4. 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500: Ford’s 3-second claim
Ford announced the 2020 Shelby GT500 with a claimed 0–60 mph time of three seconds. Its announcement describes a supercharged 5.2-liter V8. Ford’s 2020 performance catalog uses the less precise wording “mid-3.0 seconds,” so the headline figure should be understood as a rounded manufacturer claim—not an independently instrumented result with hundredth-of-a-second precision. Ford’s announcement and performance catalog provide both descriptions.

5. 2018 Ford Mustang GT: under four seconds in Drag Strip mode
Ford said the 2018 Mustang GT could reach 60 mph in under four seconds when equipped with the available 10-speed automatic and driven in Drag Strip mode. The claim also specifies available Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S tires in the Performance Pack. Because “under four seconds” is a threshold rather than an exact time, it belongs on a shortlist but cannot be precisely ranked against exact figures. Ford’s Mustang GT announcement states the configuration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why these figures are not a controlled ranking
A 0–60 mph time can change with the launch surface, tires, fuel, launch calibration and measurement method. The source claims here span different model years and setups, and do not provide a uniform independent test series. Chevrolet explicitly gives separate prepped and unprepped ZR1X times; Dodge connects the Demon 170’s maximum output to high-ethanol fuel and names its drag-radial tires. For that reason, the numbers are best read with their conditions attached rather than as a precise verdict on which car would win a direct contest.

There is also a difference between an exact manufacturer-reported number, a rounded claim and a threshold. The Demon 170 and ZR1X figures are given to hundredths of a second, Ford’s Shelby claim is rounded to three seconds, and the Mustang GT is described only as taking less than four seconds. That variation in precision does not make the cars’ real-world capabilities directly comparable.
