Titan’s 63-Inch Mining Tire: What the Size Means—and What “World’s Biggest” Doesn’t Prove

Titan lists a 58/80R63 radial mining tire. Its 63-inch designation is the nominal rim diameter—not overall tire height—and the available sources do not confirm a current world-size ranking.

Titan’s radial mining tire listed as 58/80R63 has a 63-inch nominal rim diameter—not a 63-inch overall height. Titan reported building its first radial 63-inch tire in 2008, and its 2024 OTR databook lists the 58/80R63 with LDR 150 tread. Those sources establish the product, but they do not verify that it is the world’s biggest production tire today.

How big is the 63-inch Titan tire?

Titan’s 2024 OTR Tires Databook identifies its radial 63-inch product as 58/80R63, with LDR 150 tread. In that size designation, “63” refers to the nominal diameter of the wheel rim, not the tire’s total outside diameter. The mounted tire is substantially taller than 63 inches; the cited databook extract does not establish an exact outside-diameter figure. Titan OTR Tires Databook, 2024

What the size code tells you

The product name to look for is Titan 58/80R63 mining tire. The “R” denotes radial construction, while 63 is the nominal rim diameter. The size code alone is not enough to determine whether a tire fits a particular machine; fleet operators need the machine manufacturer’s requirements and the tire’s full application specifications.

What machine uses a 63-inch mining tire?

This is an off-the-road (OTR) industrial tire, intended for mining equipment rather than ordinary passenger vehicles or highway use. Titan’s catalog describes its mining tire range as serving equipment from loaders to haul trucks. That general description does not confirm fitment of the 58/80R63 on any particular truck or loader model. Check the machine’s approved tire sizes and load requirements with the equipment manufacturer and Titan or an authorized OTR dealer. Titan tire catalog

Titan’s 2007 Form 10-K described its OTR market as serving earthmoving, mining, military and construction equipment. That broader category helps explain the industrial context, but it is not a fitment guide for this specific tire. Titan International 2007 Form 10-K

How Titan developed and began building the tire

2007: capacity plans and feasibility work

In April 2007, Titan announced a feasibility study for expanding production of 57- and 63-inch giant radial tires. The company said those sizes were in short supply in mining at the time—a historical statement about the market in 2007, not a description of current supply. Chairman and CEO Maurice M. Taylor Jr. said then: “Titan has the engineering and technical expertise to offer these additional sizes.” The quote records Titan’s rationale during the feasibility phase; it is not an independent assessment. On May 17, 2007, Titan said its board had approved funding to expand production capacity to include 57- and 63-inch giant radial tires. Titan estimated capacity of up to 6,000 giant radial tires per year. That was a planned capacity estimate, not evidence that the company produced that many tires annually. Titan board announcement, May 17, 2007

2008: first tire built in Bryan, Ohio

Titan Tire Corporation reported that it built its first radial 63-inch tire at its Bryan, Ohio facility on February 15, 2008. In a February 28 release, Titan said it expected to begin supplying selected mines in approximately 90 days. That was the company’s forecast at the time; the release does not verify when deliveries actually began. Titan Tire Corporation release, February 28, 2008

Is it the world’s biggest production tire?

The sources establishing Titan’s 58/80R63 product and its first build do not establish a current worldwide ranking. A claim that it is the “world’s biggest production tire” would require current, comparable specifications across manufacturers and independent verification of what counts as a production tire. The available Titan product listing and historical company announcements do not provide that comparison.

For a meaningful comparison, match the tire’s application and machine fitment, nominal rim and tire size, radial construction, tread pattern, load and speed ratings, operating conditions, and service support. A single diameter shorthand or a historical launch announcement cannot establish a present-day world ranking.

Can you buy a Titan 63-inch tire?

Titan’s databook establishes the named 58/80R63 product, but the cited sources do not establish current inventory, price, or a standard consumer retail route. This is a specialized mining tire, so a fleet operator should confirm current availability, exact specifications, and machine fitment directly with Titan or an authorized OTR dealer before making plans. The 2024 databook is a product reference, not a guarantee of present availability.
