Pontiac introduced it for the 1964 model year as an option for the Tempest. It is often credited with starting the muscle-car era, though that familiar label does not mean it was the first American performance car of any kind.
What made the 1964 Pontiac GTO different?
Pontiac announced the GTO sport option in October 1963 for the 1964 Tempest. General Motors describes the package as pairing the mid-sized car with a 325-horsepower version of Pontiac’s V-8. In GM’s account, the GTO’s 389-cubic-inch engine replaced the Tempest’s standard 326-cubic-inch V-8. GM’s retrospective on the GTO and GM Heritage’s 1964 GTO entry provide the model’s launch context and the 325-horsepower rating.
The important idea was the combination, not just the engine: a potent V-8 and performance equipment in a mid-sized platform. GM Heritage calls the 1964 GTO moment the “Birth of the Muscle Car.” The phrase “original muscle car” is best understood as a statement about the GTO’s influence and conventional reputation, not proof that no earlier American performance car existed.
Pontiac’s 1964 sales brochure described the car as “a device for shrinking time and distance.” It also said it was “Designed as a piece of performance machinery, its purpose in life is to permit you to make the most of your driving skill.” GM reproduces both lines in its retrospective; neither is attributed there to a named author.

How did the early GTO change from 1964 to 1966?
The first three model years show the GTO evolving in both specification and status. The horsepower figures below are published ratings, not results from a modern test.
| Model year | Model status | Engine and reported rating | Other documented change |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1964 | Sport option for the Pontiac Tempest | 389-cubic-inch V-8; 325 hp, according to GM and GM Heritage | GM says the 389 replaced the Tempest’s standard 326-cubic-inch V-8. |
| 1965 | Tempest option | Base 389 rated at 335 hp; optional Tri-Power version rated at 360 hp, as reported in the Muscle Cars Field Guide excerpt | The reference excerpt reports new sheet metal and vertically stacked headlights. |
| 1966 | Standalone Pontiac model, rather than a Tempest option | Not stated in the cited sources | Hagerty describes a significant body revision and identifies 1966 as the GTO’s peak sales year. |
The 1965 figures come from a published reference-book excerpt, so they should be read as that source’s reported specifications. This early-year comparison is not a complete year-by-year specification history.

When did the GTO become its own model?
Pontiac made the GTO a standalone model for 1966, two years after its debut as a Tempest option. Hagerty’s 2024 valuation report identifies 1966 as the model’s peak sales year and reports 96,946 units. That is Hagerty’s reported figure, not a sales count independently recalculated here. Hagerty’s June 4, 2024 report gives the figure and discusses the year’s body revision.
What happened to the GTO after the 1960s?
The GTO’s status changed again in 1972, when Pontiac returned it to option-package status. GM’s retrospective connects the changing market climate in part to the oil embargo and gas rationing. Pontiac discontinued the GTO after the 1974 model year.

The name returned to the U.S. for the 2004–2006 model years on a car based on the Holden Monaro and assembled by GM’s Australian arm, according to GM. This revival is a separate chapter from the classic 1964–1974 GTO story.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why is the GTO called the original muscle car?
The label reflects the GTO’s influence: its high-profile pairing of a powerful V-8 with a mid-sized car helped establish a formula that other GM divisions followed. That impact supports calling it one of the defining early muscle cars and saying it helped start the muscle-car era. It does not establish that the GTO was literally the first American performance car; that broader claim would require a separate, carefully scoped comparison.
