Ram rates the diesel at 430 horsepower and 1,075 lb-ft of torque, while an independent first-drive account describes the transmission holding gears longer in Tow/Haul mode to keep the engine in its powerband. The headline towing figures are substantial, but they are manufacturer ratings for specific configurations—not a promise that every Ram Heavy Duty can tow the maximum.
What changed for 2025?
Ram replaced the previous Heavy Duty diesel powertrain setup with a High-Output version of the 6.7-liter Cummins inline-six and a new TorqueFlite HD eight-speed automatic. Both the diesel and gas engines use the new transmission and an electronic column shifter, according to Ram’s January 7, 2025 announcement.
The change is intended to make the powertrain better suited to heavy work as well as everyday driving. In Edmunds’ first-drive account, Tow/Haul mode holds gears longer, keeping the Cummins in its powerband while towing. Edmunds also describes driving on Davis Dam, which it identifies as the location of the official SAE J2807 towing test. That offers context for the truck’s towing behavior, but the available account does not establish a full independently measured performance table or the exact review-truck configuration.
How do the diesel and gas engines compare?
Ram’s 2025 specifications list two engine choices. The diesel’s torque advantage is substantial on paper; the HEMI remains the gasoline alternative. These are manufacturer-rated outputs, not results from an independent comparison test.

Ram’s 2025 buyer’s guide lists those engine outputs. Cummins vice president Jane Beaman said the latest 6.7-liter engine improved “power, efficiency, serviceability and driveability.” That is the engine maker’s description; the available first-drive reporting does not establish fuel-economy results or long-term durability.
How much can a 2025 Ram Heavy Duty tow?
Ram’s launch announcement claims up to 36,610 pounds of diesel towing for the 2025 Heavy Duty lineup. For the Ram 3500, it separately lists a maximum gooseneck trailer rating of 36,610 pounds and a maximum conventional-hitch trailer rating of 23,000 pounds. These ratings describe different hitch methods and applications; they are not figures one truck can necessarily achieve at the same time.

Ram also claims up to 7,590 pounds of gas payload. Towing capacity and payload are different limits: payload covers what the truck carries, including occupants, cargo and applicable hitch load, while a trailer rating concerns the trailer under the specified conditions. A truck near its trailer limit can still exceed its payload or axle limits.
Actual ratings depend on the truck’s engine, axle ratio, cab, bed, equipment and other configuration details. Ram’s towing guide cautions that options, equipment, passengers and cargo affect ratings. Before choosing a trailer, check the specific truck’s labels and documentation, including its door-jamb payload information, and match them to the loaded trailer, hitch and planned cargo. Do not use a lineup maximum as the rating for an individual truck.

What does the new transmission add when towing?
The eight-speed automatic is more than an additional ratio count in the spec sheet: the Edmunds account says Tow/Haul mode holds gears longer to keep the Cummins in its powerband. That behavior is relevant on grades, where a transmission’s gear choices help manage engine speed and available pulling power. It is a reported driving impression, not a substitute for a configuration-specific tow rating.
Ram says the engine and transmission changes enable up to 36,610 pounds of towing with a 3.42 rear axle ratio. That is the automaker’s capability claim, not an independently reproduced result in the first drive. Ram also claims the 2025 Ram 2500 reaches 60 mph in 6.9 seconds, compared with 8.0 seconds for the 2024 model; those acceleration figures are manufacturer-reported.

What changed inside the cabin and around the truck?
Ram lists a broad set of available screens and towing-related equipment for 2025. Depending on trim and configuration, the announced features include:
- Uconnect 5 with an available 14.5-inch center touchscreen, a 10.25-inch passenger screen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.
- A digital rearview mirror and dual wireless phone charging.
- A 2.4-kilowatt onboard inverter with two covered 110-volt outlets in the bed.
- Trailer reverse guidance and optional auxiliary exterior cameras.
- New driver-assistance features.
These are lineup features, not a guarantee that every item comes standard or appears on a particular test truck. Check the equipment list for the exact trim before treating a screen, camera or power outlet as included.

What should a buyer compare before choosing an engine or truck?
The maximum diesel tow figure and maximum gas payload figure answer different questions, and neither alone identifies the right truck. Start with the load you need to carry and the trailer you intend to pull, then compare the specific truck’s ratings and equipment.
- Identify the trailer and hitch method. Confirm whether the application uses a conventional hitch, gooseneck or another setup, and use the rating that applies to that method.
- Calculate loaded weight. Include passengers, cargo and hitch load when checking payload, and compare the loaded trailer against the truck’s applicable towing rating.
- Verify the exact truck. Check the door-jamb payload label and the ratings for the truck’s engine, axle ratio, cab, bed and installed equipment.
- Compare the relevant trim’s equipment. Confirm whether the screens, cameras, onboard power and driver-assistance features you need are standard or optional.
The Cummins is the higher-torque choice in Ram’s published specifications, while the HEMI is the gas alternative. Choosing between them should follow the required trailer weight, payload margin and truck configuration—not a comparison of two maximum figures that may belong to different vehicles.
What did the 2025 Ram Heavy Duty cost at launch?
In its January 7, 2025 launch announcement, Ram listed a starting price of $47,560 for the 2025 Ram 2500, including destination, and said the pickups were expected at dealers in the first quarter of 2025. Those are launch-era MSRP and availability statements, not current pricing or a statement of present inventory.
