The often-repeated 16-million figure is not established by the official sources available here, and production volume alone cannot prove that an engine is exceptionally reliable or the “greatest of all time.” What the documented record does show is a long-running V6 family designed for broad use across the automaker’s lineup.
How many Pentastar engines have been made?
Stellantis reported that it had produced its 10-millionth Pentastar V-6 on February 19, 2019. In the company’s account, powertrain executive Bob Lee said, “We’re celebrating production of the 10-millionth Pentastar V-6 engine.” That confirms the milestone had been reached by that date; it does not give an exact current cumulative total.
The claim that 16 million Pentastars have been made is not verified by the cited official material. Without a newer primary-source announcement, it should be treated as unconfirmed rather than as a Stellantis-established figure. Stellantis’ 2019 milestone account is the dated production figure available here.
How did the Pentastar become a long-running engine family?
Stellantis says work on the engine began in 2005, the Pentastar was unveiled in April 2009, and production began in 2010. Lee’s account says the 10-millionth engine came off the line in less than ten years after production started. The company described the family as spanning 3.0-, 3.2- and 3.6-liter displacements and said it replaced seven legacy V6 engines in its lineup.

Those are manufacturer-reported milestones and design history. Stellantis also described a die-cast aluminum block, exhaust manifolds integrated into the cylinder heads, and an architecture intended to accommodate front-, rear- and all-wheel-drive applications. The automaker characterized the engine’s reach this way: “It powers cars, SUVs, minivans, pickup trucks and is a key part of our full hybrid and eTorque mild hybrid powertrains.”
Which vehicles use the Pentastar V6?
The Pentastar has appeared in different vehicle types and powertrain arrangements, but fitment varies by market and model year. Two examples in Stellantis’ 2025 product-information sheet illustrate why the engine name alone does not describe the entire configuration:

| 2025 application | Powertrain arrangement | Published output |
|---|---|---|
| Ram 1500 | 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 with eTorque mild-hybrid assistance | 305 hp and 271 lb-ft for the listed engine application |
| Chrysler Pacifica | 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 plug-in hybrid | 260 hp total system power, not engine-only output |
These figures and configurations come from the 2025 Stellantis powertrain availability sheet. They are examples, not a complete global fitment list. A truck with eTorque and a plug-in-hybrid minivan are not interchangeable configurations; when comparing them, distinguish engine output from system output and account for vehicle, model year and drivetrain.
Is the 3.6 Pentastar a reliable engine?
The documented production milestone and broad application history establish that Stellantis built the Pentastar at scale and used it across varied vehicles. They do not establish a failure rate, long-term durability record, or comparative reliability ranking. The available evidence therefore does not settle whether the Pentastar deserves an objective “GOAT-level” label.

That distinction matters: a high production total is not a count of trouble-free engines, and a manufacturer’s account of its own engine is not an independent reliability study. A defensible verdict is narrower—the Pentastar has been a significant, versatile corporate V6, while claims that it is among the most reliable or the greatest require comparative durability evidence not provided by these sources.
What oil does a 3.6 Pentastar take?
There is no single oil specification or capacity that should be applied to every Pentastar vehicle. A 2024 Chrysler VF fluid reference specifies 6 quarts (5.6 liters) with filter for that application’s 3.6L engine and recommends Mopar SAE 0W-20 full synthetic meeting material standard MS-6395. It says equivalent full synthetic SAE 0W-20 oil bearing the API Starburst trademark may also be used. These are vehicle-specific instructions, not a universal engine-family specification. Consult the owner’s manual for the exact model year and application before choosing oil or estimating capacity. The 2024 Chrysler VF fluid reference provides the cited application details.

What should owners know about Pentastar oil-filter-adapter repairs?
Chrysler service guidance identifies an oil-filter-adapter seal kit for Pentastar V6 applications and gives different O-ring guidance by model year: a black O-ring for 2023 and later, and a red O-ring for 2022 and earlier. The same tip includes separate directions for 2014 and other model-year or mileage cases. That makes exact vehicle fitment important; the engine-family name alone is not enough to select a seal or repair procedure. Use the applicable service information and verify the part against the vehicle before ordering. Chrysler’s oil-filter-adapter service tip describes the distinctions.
A separate manufacturer service tip addresses a narrower diagnostic case: when code P06DD is present on a Pentastar V6 application, technicians should inspect the oil pump for relief-valve ball failure and should not reset the ball. This is not a direction for every owner with a warning light to replace the pump. Diagnosis and any repair should follow the procedure for the specific vehicle. The P06DD service tip describes that diagnostic guidance.
