The Toyota that best fits a V-12 is the second-generation Century, built from 1997 to 2017. Its 5.0-liter 1GZ-FE was designed not to chase a headline-grabbing sports-car character, but to make Toyota’s flagship sedan quieter and smoother for the people riding in the back. Toyota called it Japan’s first passenger-car V-12.
Why the Century got Toyota’s V-12
The Century has been Toyota’s flagship sedan since 1967, with a brief built around formal luxury and rear-seat comfort. When Toyota redesigned it in 1997, the company introduced the 1GZ-FE: a newly developed 5.0-liter V-12. That pairing makes the second-generation Century the marque’s defining production V-12—not a provable claim about every prototype or non-production project, but the clearest fit between a Toyota engine and a car built to deliver a composed, chauffeur-oriented ride.
Toyota’s launch announcement framed the engine around refinement rather than spectacle. It cited low torque variation, quiet operation, stable combustion and strong low- and midrange torque as contributors to smooth progress. The car’s high-rigidity body, layered sound insulation and reduced wind noise were part of the same effort to make the cabin a more restful place for rear passengers. Toyota chief engineer Mitsuyuki Noguchi said the new model built on its predecessor’s “grace and comfort” and sought to raise its level of “luxury performance.” Toyota’s April 18, 1997 launch announcement describes these aims and the engineering behind them.
How the 1GZ-FE was engineered
Two banks, with independent systems
The 1GZ-FE’s two six-cylinder banks had independent intake equipment, electronic throttles, sensors and EFI computers, as well as two fuel pumps. Toyota said the arrangement allowed the car to run on one bank in an emergency. That is a specific claim in the context of the 1997 design, not a modern limp-home guarantee or a promise that a surviving car can safely be driven after a fault.

Combustion and response
Toyota listed a 10.5:1 compression ratio and described slant-squish combustion chambers and VVT-i as supporting stable combustion and useful low- and midrange torque. The aim was the sort of smooth, readily available response that suited a large luxury sedan, rather than a V-12 whose appeal depended on high-rpm performance.
1997 specifications, in context
| Item | Toyota’s launch-announcement figure |
|---|---|
| Engine | 5.0-liter 1GZ-FE V-12 |
| Compression ratio | 10.5:1 |
| Transmission | Four-speed electronically controlled automatic |
| Fuel economy | 7.2 km/L in Japan’s period 10.15 mode; Toyota reported about a 13% improvement over the preceding Century |
These are Toyota’s figures from the 1997 announcement, not independent test results. The fuel-economy number uses the period’s Japanese 10.15 mode; it should not be read as a current-cycle figure or a real-world consumption estimate. Toyota’s announcement is the source for the specifications and test context.

The V-12 was part of the passenger experience
The Century’s case for a V-12 is stronger when viewed as a complete luxury brief, not just an engine layout. Toyota listed separate front and rear climate settings, rear-seat heaters and automatic door-closing mechanisms among the car’s amenities. Those details, combined with the emphasis on cabin quiet and smoothness, show why a refined twelve-cylinder engine made sense here: it served a car organized around the comfort of its occupants.

Toyota’s 2019 retrospective places the V-12 squarely in the second generation and shows that the formula changed with the third. The newer Century retained a 5.0-liter displacement but moved to a V-8 hybrid system.

| Century generation | Dates | Powertrain Toyota lists |
|---|---|---|
| First | 1967–1997 | 3.0-liter V-8 |
| Second | 1997–2017 | 5.0-liter V-12 |
| Third | Introduced in June 2018; Toyota’s retrospective was published in May 2019 | 5.0-liter V-8 hybrid |
Toyota’s retrospective calls the second-generation engine “V12/5L” and describes the third-generation powertrain as a “V8/5L” environmentally friendly hybrid. So if the question is which Toyota had a V-12, the answer is the 1997–2017 second-generation Century—not the current-generation car. Toyota’s 2019 Century retrospective provides the generation timeline and powertrain descriptions.
