Mitsubishi’s Rare Passenger-Car V8: The 4.5-Liter Engine in the Proudia and Dignity

Mitsubishi’s Proudia luxury sedan offered a 4.5-liter V8 GDI in Japan. Its Dignity sister limousine was stretched, and a separate diesel V8 makes “only V8 ever” too broad.

Mitsubishi Motors offered a 4.5-liter V8 GDI in its Japan-market Proudia luxury sedan, launched in February 2000. Its stretched sister limousine, the Dignity, used the same model family. Calling it Mitsubishi’s “only V8 ever,” however, needs qualification: a separate SAE paper record documents a Mitsubishi 20-liter diesel V8. The 4.5-liter engine is best understood as Mitsubishi’s rare passenger-car V8, not its only V8 of every kind.

Did Mitsubishi make a V8 engine?

Yes. Mitsubishi Motors’ history of the Proudia says the sedan was available with either a 3.5-liter V6 GDI or a new 4.5-liter V8 GDI when it launched in Japan in February 2000. The V8 was therefore part of a passenger-car offering, not merely an industrial or heavy-duty engine.

The distinction matters when describing it as the only Mitsubishi V8. An SAE technical-paper record documents a separate 20-liter Mitsubishi diesel V8. That engine belongs to a different category from the Proudia’s 4.5-liter gasoline engine, so the broad claim that Mitsubishi made only one V8 ever is not supported. The narrower description—Mitsubishi’s rare passenger-car V8—is accurate. Mitsubishi Motors’ Proudia history; SAE technical-paper record.

What car used Mitsubishi’s 4.5-liter V8?

Proudia: a large luxury sedan

The Proudia was Mitsubishi’s luxury sedan, launched in Japan in February 2000. Buyers could choose a 3.5-liter V6 GDI or the 4.5-liter V8 GDI. Mitsubishi’s history page identifies the engine by displacement and injection type, but does not provide a complete specification sheet there; it does not establish output, torque, production totals, or independent performance-test results.

Dignity: the stretched sister limousine

Mitsubishi describes the Dignity as the Proudia’s sister limousine. Its body was stretched by 285 mm, reaching 5,335 mm overall, and Mitsubishi says the change provided 250 mm more legroom. These are manufacturer-stated vehicle figures, not independent measurements. The cited history page identifies the Dignity’s relationship to the Proudia but does not establish a complete engine-option specification for the limousine. Mitsubishi Motors’ Proudia and Dignity history.

What does GDI mean, and why does Mitsubishi mention it?

GDI means gasoline direct injection: fuel is injected directly into the engine’s cylinders. Mitsubishi dates its introduction of cylinder gasoline direct injection technology to May 1995. The Proudia’s V8 was described as a GDI engine, placing it within Mitsubishi’s broader adoption of that injection approach. The date refers to the company’s introduction of the technology, not to the launch date of the Proudia. Mitsubishi Motors’ technology history.

What was Mitsubishi’s connection to Hyundai’s V8?

Mitsubishi’s 2000 corporate chronology says the company announced that Hyundai Motor Co. would use Mitsubishi GDI technology in a new V8 engine. This supports a technology-use announcement; it does not establish that Hyundai’s engine was identical to the Proudia’s 4.5-liter V8, that the companies jointly manufactured an engine, or the details of their design relationship. What is known—and not established—about the engine?

The official Mitsubishi history establishes the 4.5-liter displacement, V8 layout, GDI injection, and its availability in the Proudia. It also places the Proudia and Dignity in the same luxury-car family. The available primary-source material cited here does not establish an engine code, full output and torque figures, production totals, or detailed end-of-production dates. Those details should not be inferred from the car’s rarity or from the separate Hyundai technology announcement.

The most defensible summary is specific: Mitsubishi Motors offered a 4.5-liter gasoline direct-injection V8 in its Japan-market Proudia luxury sedan, with the Dignity as its stretched sister limousine. A separate Mitsubishi 20-liter diesel V8 means that “the only V8 ever made by Mitsubishi” is too sweeping unless the category is explicitly limited to this passenger-car engine.
