The last new-car model in the United States with a base MSRP below $20,000 was the 2025 Nissan Versa S. Its five-speed-manual version carried a $17,390 MSRP, but Nissan ended U.S. production in December 2025. That makes the Versa the last model to meet the price threshold—not a newly produced 2026 option. Leftover dealer stock may exist, but availability varies and has not been established nationwide.
What did “under $20,000” mean?
It meant the base manufacturer’s suggested retail price for the entry-level trim, not the price of every Versa or the amount a buyer would necessarily pay. Nissan’s September 20, 2024 pricing announcement listed the 2025 Versa S with a five-speed manual at $17,390 and the S with Xtronic CVT at $19,190. The SV and SR trims were $20,690 and $21,390, respectively. Only the S trims were below $20,000 before destination and other charges. Nissan’s 2025 Versa pricing release said destination and handling added $1,245.
With that destination charge, the manual S came to $18,635 before taxes, title, license, options, dealer additions, or negotiation. Nissan notes that MSRP excludes those costs and that the dealer sets the actual price. So $17,390 was a starting MSRP, not an out-the-door promise.
Is there still a new car under $20,000?
The Versa’s U.S. production ended in December 2025. Cars.com reported Nissan’s decision on December 29, 2025, quoting Josh Clifton, Nissan senior manager of product communications: “In line with Nissan’s product strategy, the Nissan Versa ended production in December 2025 for the U.S. market.” The Versa therefore no longer represents an ongoing new-car model for the U.S. market.

That does not prove every unsold 2025 Versa disappeared on the production end date. A dealer could have leftover new stock, but a complete live nationwide inventory check is not available here. If you find one advertised as new, confirm that it is unsold inventory, ask for a dated written quote, and compare its selling price—including dealer add-ons and fees—with the destination-inclusive MSRP. Local availability is the deciding factor.
What is the cheapest new car in America now?
There is no single answer that covers every listing and every definition of “cheapest.” In January 2026, Kelley Blue Book reported that the Versa S had been the only trim below $20,000 and described it as virtually impossible to find; KBB estimated that the last such car may have sold in late 2025. That is an assessment, not a nationwide record of every transaction or leftover vehicle.

For a model-year comparison, Cars.com reported 2026 starting prices including destination of $23,845 for the Nissan Sentra and $23,925 for the Nissan Kicks. Those figures are above $20,000 and are a snapshot reported in 2025, not a live survey of all current listings. KBB identified the Hyundai Venue as the holder of the new-cheapest-car title in its January 2026 coverage. Its broader market context was that 36 models cost $25,000 or less including destination in 2017, compared with four by the end of 2025: the Chevrolet Trax, Chevrolet Trailblazer, Nissan Kicks, and Hyundai Venue. The pool shrank, even though the threshold in that count was $25,000 rather than $20,000.
What did the 2025 Versa offer?
The Versa was a compact sedan with a 1.6-liter four-cylinder rated at 122 horsepower. The five-speed manual was available on the S; Nissan’s Xtronic CVT was optional on the S and standard on SV and SR. Nissan cited EPA estimates for 2025 of up to 32 mpg city, 40 highway, and 35 combined for Xtronic models. Its estimates for manual versions were 27 city, 35 highway, and 30 combined. These are manufacturer-published 2025 model-year figures, not 2026 specifications or independent test results.

Nissan listed Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Warning, Rear Automatic Braking, and High Beam Assist as standard equipment for the 2025 model. These features and specifications describe the discontinued model year; they should not be read as equipment on a current Versa.
Should you look for a leftover Versa or a used one?
First decide whether the car must be new. A leftover, untitled 2025 model and a used Versa are different purchases: warranty status, mileage, condition, vehicle history, and financing terms can differ. Because the S manual was the trim that started below $20,000, verify the exact trim and transmission on any listing rather than relying on the model name alone.

- For a used Versa: Check the model year, mileage, title and accident history, maintenance records, and the condition of the specific car. A used car does not count as a new car under the original price distinction.
- If considering alternatives: Compare the full destination-inclusive starting price and the actual quote for the exact vehicle. The reported 2026 Sentra and Kicks prices are above the old threshold, while KBB’s cheapest-car designation is a market comparison rather than a guarantee of local availability.
Why did Nissan discontinue it?
Nissan’s attributed explanation was that the decision was “in line with Nissan’s product strategy.” The available statement does not identify a more specific cause, so claims that demand, tariffs, production costs, or profit margins drove the cancellation would go beyond what Nissan said.
