The North Face Red Box British Millerain ’76 Mountain Parka pairs a heritage outdoor-parka shape with wax-finished cotton: a combination that invites comparison to Barbour’s waxed-jacket tradition. Gear Patrol reports a 40-denier, 100% cotton shell with an Ultra Dry Wax Finish, designed to resist water and develop a worn-in patina. That is not the same as a claim that the parka is waterproof, nor evidence that it copies a specific Barbour model.
Which North Face parka is this?
The model is the The North Face Red Box British Millerain ’76 Mountain Parka. Its name points to The North Face’s 1976 Mountain Parka, which Gear Patrol says followed the original Mountain Parka’s 1970 introduction. Gear Patrol also places the Red Box Collection in the brand’s 1990s identity. Those historical details are reported by Gear Patrol, not independently verified here. Gear Patrol’s product article is the source for the model description and history.
It is distinct from The North Face Men’s 30th Anniversary Himalayan Parka. The official UK listing for that separate model describes waxed ripstop and 600-fill down; those specifications do not apply to the ’76 Mountain Parka. The North Face UK listing identifies the Himalayan model.
What the cotton and wax finish mean
Gear Patrol describes the shell as heavyweight 40-denier, 100% cotton, with a smooth, lighter hand than traditional canvas. Its Ultra Dry Wax Finish is intended to provide water resistance and gradually acquire a worn-in patina. The source does not establish a waterproof rating or provide a product-specific performance test, so treat “water-resistant” as the reported claim—not a promise of protection in prolonged or heavy rain.

Gear Patrol also describes British Millerain as a Yorkshire fabric supplier whose roots trace to 1880. That heritage helps explain the material choice, but the age of the supplier does not independently establish how this particular jacket performs.
Why the Barbour comparison fits—and where it stops
The comparison is about a shared material tradition and visual language: waxed cotton, practical outerwear, and a finish that can show wear over time. Barbour describes its own waxed cotton as wind-resistant and water-repellent, and says the material develops marks and patina. Those claims concern Barbour jackets, not this North Face parka. Barbour’s men’s waxed-jacket collection includes named styles such as Bedale and Beaufort, but those are specific alternatives rather than interchangeable versions of the ’76 Mountain Parka.
