What Nissan has confirmed about the returning Xterra
Nissan announced the Xterra’s return at its April 14, 2026 Vision event. The company describes the future model as a rugged SUV built in the United States on a new body-on-frame platform. Nissan’s U.S. future-vehicles page uses the same broad description and says the SUV will have a V6 or a V6 Hybrid powertrain.

The launch timing is a target, not a guaranteed on-sale date: Nissan says late 2028. The company says it will share more information as launch approaches. Its April 14, 2026 announcement also describes a planned family of five U.S.-built body-on-frame vehicles, including the Xterra. Nissan says that family could expand to pickups and multi-row SUVs under Nissan and INFINITI; those additional vehicles are possibilities, not confirmed products.
Will the 2028 Xterra be a hybrid?
Nissan has not confirmed a hybrid-only Xterra. Its announcement describes the body-on-frame model family as offering “V6 or new V6 Hybrid powertrains,” while the Xterra product page says “V6 or a V6 Hybrid powertrain.” That establishes the broad powertrain choices Nissan is planning, but not whether both will be offered on the Xterra, how they will be configured, or which trims will get them.

Nissan has not published an engine designation, hybrid-system details, horsepower, torque, fuel economy, or performance figures for the new Xterra. Those details should not be inferred from the prior model or from the phrase “V6 Hybrid.”
What remains unknown
Nissan’s cited announcement does not state a price, trim lineup, dimensions, towing capacity, off-road equipment, or reservation and order timing. It also does not specify drivetrain availability or provide a side-by-side breakdown of the V6 and V6 Hybrid. Until Nissan releases those particulars, there is no reliable basis for comparing configurations or estimating what the new Xterra will cost or be capable of.

Nissan says the previous Xterra was produced from 2000 to 2015. Its historical page lists a 4.0-liter V6 rated at 261 horsepower and 281 lb-ft of torque for the 2015 final production year, and fuel economy of up to 16 mpg city and 22 mpg highway for 2015 X and S models. Those are predecessor figures, not specifications for the returning SUV.
Nissan’s older Xterra page also lists maximum towing capacity of up to 5,000 pounds, but that legacy claim should not be applied to the 2028 model.
