After Hurricane Helene’s floodwaters carried his Rivian R1T about 100 feet down the Swannanoa River, Asheville owner Michael Cusick found that its door handles opened and the truck started and drove. Rivian calls the survival exceptional—not evidence that an R1T, or any vehicle, can safely withstand flooding.
What happened to the R1T after Hurricane Helene?
In an account published March 23, 2026, Rivian says Cusick returned after the storm to find his truck had been carried about 100 feet from where he had parked it. He described it as covered in mud. The door handles opened, and he says he got in and drove away. Rivian later analyzed the truck at a local service center.
Rivian quotes Cusick describing the moment: “It was a pile of mud, completely covered—and if you could see the look on my face when I walked up to her and the door handles popped open,” he told the company’s team. “It was borderline unbelievable. I got in the vehicle and sort of just drove off as if nothing happened.” Rivian’s account is the company’s own retelling, not a published technical inspection report.
Why do earlier reports name a different owner?
Contemporaneous coverage from October 2024 does not match Rivian’s later account on every detail. Electrek reported that the owner was Joshua Vincent Sauer and placed the truck 100 to 150 feet from its parking spot. EVwire’s October 18 report calls the owner Michael and reproduces a first-person account, but does not establish his surname in the text reviewed. Rivian’s 2026 story identifies him as Michael Cusick and gives the distance as about 100 feet. Those accounts should not be blended into a single, undisputed name and exact measurement.

What does the story establish about the truck?
Rivian says its team analyzed the R1T at a local service center after it was recovered. The company’s story does not provide a full inspection report, measurements of flood damage, or a detailed account of the truck’s condition immediately after the analysis.
Rivian also reports that Cusick said the motors and battery were the same ones that survived the flood and that he had driven 20,000 miles since. That is an owner statement published by the manufacturer; the mileage and component history are not presented as independently verified findings. The truck’s ability to start and move immediately after the flood does not establish that it had no hidden damage or would suffer no later effects.

Does this mean an R1T can safely drive through floodwater?
No. Rivian’s March 2026 guidance lists a maximum water-fording depth of 39 inches (1 m) for R1 vehicles. That is a manufacturer-stated fording specification, not a safe-depth guarantee for every situation. Fast-moving water, concealed obstacles, unstable ground, water entering the vehicle, and prolonged submersion are different hazards from fording under controlled conditions.
“Never attempt to cross a deep, fast flowing body of water, as doing so could result in vehicle damage, serious injury, or death.” — Rivian, “Beyond the Banks,” March 23, 2026

Rivian says its vehicles are not designed to withstand long periods submerged and recommends having a vehicle inspected at a local service center if it spends a significant time underwater during a weather event. The company describes Cusick’s outcome as exceptional, not the expected result of a flood.
What does Rivian advise for water crossings?
For a crossing that is within the vehicle’s stated limits and otherwise safe to attempt, Rivian’s guidance says to assess the water and route before entering. Follow the model-specific Owner’s Guide; conditions can change quickly, and the manufacturer’s instructions do not make a dangerous crossing safe.

- Check water depth, the ground surface, entry and exit points, and possible hidden obstacles.
- Fully close doors and storage areas, and keep windows down in case of an emergency.
- Enter slowly and maintain a steady speed below 5 mph while fording.
- If the water deepens or the vehicle begins to sink, back out carefully.
- Afterward, clear the horn, check the brakes, wash the vehicle, and clean the heat exchanger if debris is present. Consult the Owner’s Guide or a service professional rather than treating these checks as a substitute for professional inspection.
Rivian’s current instructions are in its water-crossing guidance; owners should also consult the guide for their specific model.

It documents a striking reported outcome: one R1T was swept downstream in Helene’s flooding, then opened, started, and drove. It does not establish a general flood-survival rate for Rivians or electric vehicles, prove that the truck was undamaged, or make driving through floodwater advisable.
