The generation breaks are 1998–2003, 2004–2010, 2011–2020, and 2021–2026. The 2025 and 2026 Siennas are updated versions of the fourth generation—not a fifth generation.
The most important breakpoints for shoppers and parts research are 2004, when Toyota introduced a substantially larger Sienna; 2007, when the second generation switched from a 3.3-liter V6 to a 3.5-liter V6; 2011, when the third generation arrived; and 2021, when the Sienna became hybrid-only.
Toyota Sienna generations at a glance
| Generation | U.S. model years | Powertrain identity | What changed |
|---|---|---|---|
| First generation | 1998–2003 | 3.0-liter V6, front-wheel drive | Introduced as the North American replacement for the Previa |
| Second generation | 2004–2010 | 3.3-liter V6 initially; 3.5-liter V6 from 2007; FWD or AWD | Major size and packaging redesign |
| Third generation | 2011–2020 | V6 power; FWD or AWD | All-new body with expanded technology and safety equipment |
| Fourth generation | 2021–2026 | Hybrid-only 2.5-liter four-cylinder system; FWD or electronic on-demand AWD | TNGA-K platform, hybrid powertrain, and later technology updates |
Toyota’s standard U.S. consumer-facing history divides the Sienna into these four generations. Some databases may split facelifts or production changes into additional subgroups, but those are not separate primary generations.
First-generation Toyota Sienna: 1998–2003
Toyota launched the Sienna in North America for the 1998 model year as the replacement for the mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive Previa. Unlike the Previa, the Sienna used a stretched and modified Camry-derived front-wheel-drive platform. Toyota described the concept as “the Camry of minivans,” emphasizing more car-like ride and handling while retaining minivan seating and cargo utility.

First-generation Siennas were assembled at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky in Georgetown. The body was relatively compact by modern minivan standards: 193.5 inches long on a 114-inch wheelbase. Toyota offered seven- or eight-seat configurations and CE, LE, and XLE grades.
First-generation engine and drivetrain
- Engine: 3.0-liter V6
- Output: 194 horsepower
- Transmission: Four-speed electronically controlled automatic
- Drive: Front-wheel drive
Safety equipment included standard anti-lock brakes. Front-seat-mounted side torso airbags and Vehicle Stability Control were available, depending on model year and equipment configuration.
How to recognize one: Look for the smaller rounded body, late-1990s styling, front-wheel-drive layout, and original 3.0-liter V6. The first-generation model years are 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2003.
Second-generation Toyota Sienna: 2004–2010
The 2004 Sienna was a major redesign rather than a minor styling update. Toyota’s customer research found that owners wanted more room, versatility, power, and safety. Compared with the first generation, the redesigned van gained approximately five inches in wheelbase and overall length, four inches in width, and 1.6 inches in height.

The larger body created more passenger and cargo flexibility and made the Sienna a more capable family hauler. Toyota also expanded the range by offering both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. Assembly moved from Kentucky to Princeton, Indiana, during this generation.
Second-generation engine changes
The generation began with a 3.3-liter V6. For 2007, Toyota replaced that engine with a 3.5-liter V6. That means a 2004–2006 Sienna and a 2007–2010 Sienna belong to the same generation but do not have the same engine.
- 2004–2006: 3.3-liter V6
- 2007–2010: 3.5-liter V6
- Drive choices: Front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, depending on configuration
Why 2004 matters to used-vehicle shoppers: A 2003 and a 2004 are adjacent model years, but they are substantially different vehicles. The 2004 introduces the larger second-generation platform, cabin, and packaging. Treat it as a major buying and parts-compatibility breakpoint.

Maintenance resource for older Siennas
If you are repairing or maintaining an older van, a Toyota Sienna repair manual can be useful for understanding generation-specific procedures. The documented Chilton-style coverage available for this opportunity applies to 1998–2009 Sienna models; it is not a single manual for every Sienna through 2026. Confirm the exact year, engine, and drivetrain before buying.
Third-generation Toyota Sienna: 2011–2020
Toyota unveiled the all-new third-generation Sienna at the 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show for the 2011 model year. The redesign was developed by Toyota Technical Center in Michigan, styled by CALTY, and produced at Toyota’s Princeton, Indiana, facility.
The third-generation Sienna continued with V6 power and remained part of the pre-hybrid era. Toyota retained the choice of seven- or eight-passenger seating, front- or all-wheel drive, and multiple trim grades. The exterior became more angular and assertive than the rounded second-generation van.
What changed during 2011–2020
The third generation lasted a full decade, so its equipment is not uniform across all ten model years. Toyota made substantial updates during the run involving engines, transmissions, driver-assistance features, infotainment, exterior styling, and trim packaging.

Fourth-generation Toyota Sienna: 2021–2026
The fourth-generation Sienna debuted for 2021 and brought the biggest powertrain change in the model’s history: the Sienna became hybrid-only. It moved to Toyota’s TNGA-K platform and paired a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with Toyota Hybrid System II.

Fourth-generation powertrain and fuel economy
- Powertrain: 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid system
- System output at launch: 243 total system horsepower
- Current listed output: 245 total system horsepower for later versions
- Drive choices: Front-wheel drive or electronic on-demand all-wheel drive
- Fuel economy: The 2021 launch rating was advertised at 33 mpg combined; later FWD versions reached up to 36 mpg combined
The AWD system is different from a conventional mechanical four-wheel-drive setup. It uses a separate electric motor to drive the rear wheels rather than a traditional transfer case and driveshaft arrangement.

Family and utility features
The fourth-generation Sienna added or expanded features aimed at family use, including available hands-free sliding doors and liftgate operation, long-slide second-row captain’s chairs with ottomans, a 3,500-pound tow rating, Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, and available 1,500-watt power outlets.
The 2022 model year added the Woodland Edition. It came with standard AWD, increased ground clearance, and outdoor-oriented equipment. The Woodland is still a fourth-generation Sienna, not a separate generation.
2025 update: technology and interior changes
Toyota updated the fourth-generation Sienna for 2025. The changes included an advanced rear-seat reminder, updated interior materials and console treatments, and the latest Toyota Audio Multimedia system. An available 12.3-inch touchscreen was added to the technology mix.
The Platinum grade added an integrated vacuum and FridgeBox, with availability also offered on Limited. These changes made the 2025 model a meaningful interior and technology update, but not a clean-sheet redesign.

The 2026 Sienna remained hybrid-only and continued with FWD or electronic on-demand AWD. Toyota listed 245 total system horsepower, up to 36 mpg combined for FWD versions, and up to 35 mpg combined for AWD versions.
The principal 2026 grades are:
- LE
- XLE
- XSE
- Limited
- Woodland Edition
- Platinum
The 2026 LE gained additional standard equipment, including an eight-speaker audio system, power rear door, rear window shades, an auto-dimming mirror, and a windshield-wiper de-icer. The XSE received standard JBL Premium Audio with 12 speakers, a subwoofer, and an amplifier. Heavy Metal exterior paint became available on several grades.

The fourth-generation model years are 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, and 2026. As of the research date of August 12, 2026, 2026 is the current U.S. model year covered by Toyota’s consumer and newsroom information.
Useful fourth-generation accessories
For a 2021–2026 Sienna, look specifically for Toyota Sienna all-weather floor mats matched to the model year, trim, drivetrain, and seating layout. Do not assume one mat set fits every Sienna. Toyota’s 2026 Woodland Edition includes all-weather floor and cargo mats, but aftermarket listings still require exact fitment verification.
For road trips, camping, or sports equipment, Toyota’s 2021 launch material identified Yakima roof carriers, crossbars, and bike racks as compatible lifestyle accessories. Before purchasing Sienna roof cargo equipment, confirm roof-rail configuration, weight limits, mounting hardware, and the exact vehicle application.
Complete Toyota Sienna model-year list
The U.S. model-year sequence is continuous from 1998 through 2026:
1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, and 2026.

How to identify a Sienna generation quickly
- 1998–2003: Look for the compact, rounded body and original 3.0-liter V6. These are front-wheel drive.
- 2004–2010: Look for the noticeably larger body. Early vans use the 3.3-liter V6; 2007–2010 vans use the 3.5-liter V6. FWD and AWD were available.
- 2011–2020: Look for the more angular third-generation body and V6 power. Equipment varies considerably by year.
- 2021–2026: Look for the fourth-generation body and hybrid-only powertrain. The 2022 Woodland Edition, 2025 multimedia/interior update, and 2026 equipment changes are within this generation.
These clues are suitable for quick orientation, but they are not a substitute for decoding the VIN or checking year-specific Toyota documentation.
Why the generation matters when buying or ordering parts
A generation label narrows the search, but it is not precise enough by itself for every purchase. Within one generation, Toyota may change the engine, transmission, safety equipment, body hardware, trim packaging, seating layout, or drivetrain.
For parts, accessories, repair information, or owner documentation, provide:
Best Value
- CUSTOM-CUT Van COVERAGE: Designed for Sienna Mini Van owners who want a windshield shade shaped for the front glass, this custom-cut design uses reinforced steel rings for a more secure fit without suction cups.
- MADE FOR DAILY HOT-WEATHER PARKING: Whether you commute, leave your vehicle outside at work, or park in open lots during summer errands, the silver-coated windshield shade is positioned to reflect heat and help reduce cabin heat buildup while also helping block UV exposure.
- DOUBLE-LAYER BUILD WITH MATERIAL EVIDENCE: Built with premium 240T reflective polyester, high-quality fabric, and reinforced steel rings/bezel, the double-layer construction adds insulation support while the fabric is described as less prone to wrinkling.
- FOLDS FOR COMPACT STORAGE: The lightweight foldable design is intended for quick pop-up and fold-down use, then stores compactly in a door pocket to support everyday use; for best results, fold carefully around mirrors, screens, or dash accessories if your setup is tight.
- BUILT TO FEEL READY FOR REPEAT USE: Proadsy pairs the custom-cut shape, reinforced steel bezel, and compact storage-friendly format to deliver a windshield shade focused on coverage, everyday convenience, and a more structured feel for Sienna Mini Van accessories shoppers.
- Model year
- Trim level
- Front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive
- Engine or hybrid powertrain, where relevant
- Seven- or eight-passenger seating configuration
- Special edition, such as Woodland
- Any relevant body or roof-rail configuration
This is especially important for floor liners, cargo mats, roof accessories, suspension components, drivetrain parts, electronics, and repair procedures. “Toyota Sienna accessories” is too broad to guarantee fitment across 1998–2026 vehicles.
Common mistakes about Sienna generations
There are not seven or eight standard U.S. generations
Toyota and major automotive model-year references use four primary North American generations. A database that lists additional divisions may be separating facelifts, production codes, or regional versions rather than identifying separate clean-sheet generations.

2025 and 2026 are not a fifth generation
The 2025 interior and technology update and the 2026 equipment changes do not create a new generation. Both remain fourth-generation hybrid Siennas.
2003 and 2004 are not essentially the same van
The 2004 redesign changed the Sienna’s size, platform packaging, cabin, and available drivetrain range. For used-vehicle comparisons and parts research, 2004 is one of the most important dividing lines in the entire model history.
