The Netherlands’ first highway pilot with glow-in-the-dark road markings opened in April 2014 on the N329 near Oss. Called “Glowing Lines,” the photoluminescent markings were designed to absorb daylight and emit light after dark. It was a 500-metre pilot—not a conversion of the Dutch highway network—and later review found no official effectiveness report for the installation.
Where and when the pilot opened
The trial was installed on the N329 near Oss, in the province of Noord-Brabant. Studio Roosegaarde gives 14 April 2014 as the public opening date; contemporary Dutch reports from around 10–11 April described the opening as taking place. The safest summary is that the pilot opened in April 2014.
NOS described a 500-metre trial stretch. Architectenweb described markings along 500 metres on both sides of the road; those are source-specific descriptions, not a basis for adding the lengths together. The installation formed part of the broader Smart Highway concept, rather than a rollout across the national network. NOS Nieuws; Architectenweb
Who designed it and how the markings worked
Daan Roosegaarde’s Studio Roosegaarde developed the project with infrastructure contractor Heijmans. Contemporary reporting identifies the municipality of Oss and the Province of Noord-Brabant as commissioners.

The road paint incorporated photoluminescent material: it absorbed or charged from daylight, then emitted light in darkness. Studio Roosegaarde described the lines as glowing for up to eight hours per night. NOS reported Heijmans’ claim that the paint would glow for at least eight hours. These are descriptions of the intended project performance, not independently verified measurements. Studio Roosegaarde’s project page; NOS Nieuws
Why use glow-in-the-dark road markings?
The project’s rationale was to make the road edge visible after dark without relying on conventional lighting. Its designers presented this as a way to improve drivers’ guidance while potentially reducing the need for lighting. Those were intended benefits; the available sources do not establish that the N329 pilot measurably improved safety or saved energy.

Daan Roosegaarde told NOS, in a statement translated from Dutch, that attention often goes to making cars smarter and more energy-neutral, while roads also shape the landscape. The comment explains the project’s wider design ambition, but it is not evidence of the markings’ on-road effectiveness. NOS Nieuws
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What later review found about performance
A Scottish Government-commissioned review of photoluminescent road markings, published in 2018, said it could find no official effectiveness report for the Dutch installation. The review also reported that the material deteriorated in wet weather and returned to laboratory testing. That makes it inappropriate to treat the N329 trial as proof that the markings were safe, durable, or ready for general deployment. Transport Scotland’s 2018 review
