The small arrow beside a car’s fuel-pump symbol points to the side of the vehicle with the fuel filler door. It is especially handy in a rental or borrowed car: follow the arrow to line up with the pump. Ford product designer Jim Moylan proposed the simple cue in 1986 after pulling up on the wrong side of a gas pump.
What the Moylan arrow tells you
Look at the fuel gauge for a small arrow beside the fuel-pump icon. It points toward the side of that vehicle where the fuel door is located. The arrow does not have one fixed left-or-right orientation across all cars; read the direction shown on the dashboard you are using.
That makes it useful when you are driving a vehicle you do not know well—a rental, a borrowed car, or another household vehicle. Check the arrow before pulling up to the pump, then position the filler side beside the hose.
How Jim Moylan came up with it
Ben Cohen’s Wall Street Journal account, drawing on Ford records and correspondence, traces the idea to an inconvenient refueling stop. In April 1986, Moylan, a Ford product-design employee driving a company pool car, pulled up to a pump only to find the fuel door was on the other side. He returned to work and submitted a “Product Convenience Suggestion” for a small dashboard symbol near the fuel gauge.

Moylan’s proposal asked for the addition across “all passenger car and truck lines.” Ford’s internal process moved the suggestion into product development by August, according to Cohen’s report. In a November response, Ford’s director of interior design wrote, “We think it is a great idea,” and said Ford planned to include it on the 1989 model-year instrument panel.
When it appeared—and what is known about its spread
Cohen points to a white arrow in the brochure for the 1989 Ford Thunderbird as an early public example. That supports dating the feature’s appearance to that period, but it does not establish the Thunderbird as the first production vehicle to use it. Some secondary accounts name the Escort and Mercury Tracer as firsts; the available account does not conclusively confirm those claims.

The Wall Street Journal describes the arrow as appearing in “almost every car with a gas tank.” That is a qualitative description, not a measured adoption rate or a count of vehicles. The documented proposal and planned rollout were at Ford in the United States; the account does not quantify worldwide adoption.
The same idea can point to an EV charging port
The directional cue is useful wherever a driver needs to identify a vehicle’s port side. Cohen reports that the Ford F-150 Lightning has an arrow beside its battery icon pointing toward the charging port. That is a specific Ford example, not evidence that every electric vehicle uses the same convention.

A small convenience, not a proven standard
Moylan later recalled that he typed up the suggestion, turned it in, and “forgot completely about it.” Cohen also reports that Moylan did not seek a patent, payment, or public credit for the idea. Ford CEO Jim Farley praised him as “an engineer in a large company who insisted on making our daily lives better.”
The arrow’s practical value lies in how little it asks of the driver: a glance at the gauge can prevent a wrong-side stop. The available account does not identify a regulator or standards body that specifies the icon, so it is best understood as a widely familiar dashboard cue rather than a formally established universal standard.
