If “most respected” means a combination of historical reach, a place in North American trucking, and a record that still commands attention, the Caterpillar 3406 family has a strong claim. Caterpillar says nearly 575,000 3406 engines reached customers worldwide, and it profiles one 3406B that passed three million miles. That makes the 3406 a defensible editorial choice—not a proven all-time winner. Detroit Diesel’s Series 60 has the stronger documented claim to Class 8 popularity, while Cummins’ N14 and B Series represent important heavy- and medium-duty alternatives.
Why the Caterpillar 3406 is a credible choice
“Most respected” is not a standardized industry award or a measurable statistic. It can mean popularity, production scale, longevity, breadth of use, or the regard an engine earns from owners and mechanics. Those measures overlap, but they are not interchangeable—and the available manufacturer histories do not provide a common, independent ranking across brands.
For North American truck history, the 3406 is a compelling pick because Caterpillar documents both a large worldwide production run and a memorable high-mileage example. Cat describes the 3406 as a best-selling truck-engine line whose worldwide population reached nearly 575,000 by the line’s end; the final 3406Es shipped in December 1999. The figure is Caterpillar’s own historical account, and its page does not specify the year in which the population total was calculated. Caterpillar’s history of Cat trucking
That is meaningful evidence of scale, not proof that the 3406 was more reliable or more admired than every rival. A large production total says how many engines a manufacturer reports building; it does not establish failure rates, repair costs, or owner sentiment.

How the main contenders compare
These engines served different segments and have different kinds of historical evidence behind them. The comparison below keeps those distinctions visible rather than treating popularity, production, and durability as the same thing.
| Engine | Best-supported historical point | What that evidence does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Caterpillar 3406 family | Caterpillar reports a worldwide population of nearly 575,000 by the line’s end, with the final 3406Es shipped in December 1999. Cat also profiles a 3406B with more than three million miles. | That the engine was objectively more reliable or more respected than every competitor, or that the high-mileage example represents typical service life. |
| Detroit Diesel Series 60 | Detroit says the Series 60 quickly became the most popular heavy-duty diesel in the North American Class 8 market. Its history also records the sale of the millionth Series 60. | A direct reliability comparison with the 3406 or Cummins N14, or a comparable lifetime production total. |
| Cummins N14 and B Series | Cummins’ 1995 annual report documents the N14 in heavy-duty trucks and B Series engines in Ford medium-duty trucks and Dodge Ram pickups. | A directly comparable production total or single measure of reputation across the N14 and B Series applications. |
Why the Detroit Series 60 is a serious rival
Detroit Diesel’s Series 60 has a particularly strong claim if the question is narrowed to popularity in North American Class 8 trucks. Detroit says it developed the engine in 1987 to meet demand for a more fuel-efficient heavy-duty engine, and that the Series 60 quickly became the most popular heavy-duty diesel in that market. The company history also records that Detroit Diesel Corporation held 33% of the on-highway market by 1993 and that one million Series 60 engines had been sold during the 2000s; the history page does not provide a more precise year for that million-engine milestone. Rank #2
Those statements make the Series 60 the best-documented choice for a popularity-focused answer. They do not settle a head-to-head reliability contest with the Cat 3406: the cited histories do not provide comparable failure, service-life, or repair-cost data.
What the 3406’s longevity evidence shows—and does not show
Caterpillar’s profile of truck owner Dale Clemmer describes a 3406B 4MG that had passed three million engine miles. The profile credits long-term maintenance, genuine parts, and overhauls. It is a striking individual case, not an average lifespan, a controlled durability test, or a promise that another 3406 will reach the same mileage. Caterpillar’s profile of Dale Clemmer

- Ocean Engine Parts provides parts equal or better in quality compared to the OE at a fraction of the cost
The distinction matters: a well-maintained engine that remains in service through overhauls demonstrates what one owner’s truck achieved with sustained care. It cannot, by itself, show how frequently the engine reaches that mileage or how its durability compares with competitors.
Where Cummins fits in the history
Cummins’ 1995 annual report offers a period snapshot of a broader truck-engine landscape. It places the N14 and M11 among the company’s heavy-duty engines and describes updated electronic controls and information technology for them. It also documents B Series engines in Ford medium-duty trucks and Dodge Ram pickups, showing how Cummins’ footprint extended beyond highway tractors into medium-duty and pickup applications. The report is historical evidence for 1995, not current market data or a lifetime production ranking. Cummins’ 1995 annual report

The historical context behind the 3406
Caterpillar traces its truck-engine work to a truck-specific D468 introduced in 1939, followed by a return to truck engines in the 1950s and the introduction of the 3300 and 3400 families in the 1970s. Its company history describes fuel economy as a major focus in the 1980s and emissions reduction as a growing challenge in the 1990s, when the 3406 line reached its end. Cat also recalls an early-1980s 3406 and 3408 “Economy Challenge” in which it reported 7 mpg while most competitors struggled to reach 5 mpg. That is Caterpillar’s retrospective promotional account, not an independent controlled comparison. Caterpillar’s history of Cat trucking
Detroit’s history places the Series 60 in a separate development arc: General Motors’ Diesel Division produced the two-cycle Series 71 in 1938, later developed on-highway engines such as the Series 53, and launched the Series 60 in 1987. The two manufacturers’ histories illuminate different product lines and market claims, but neither provides an independent, like-for-like ranking of all-time truck diesels.

Which engine deserves the title?
- For the strongest all-around editorial case: Caterpillar 3406, based on Cat’s reported production scale and its documented high-mileage owner example.
- For documented North American Class 8 popularity: Detroit Diesel Series 60, based on Detroit’s own historical account.
- For breadth across truck categories: Cummins’ N14 and B Series belong in the conversation, especially when heavy-duty, medium-duty, and pickup applications are all included.
Those answers differ because they use different criteria. None should be mistaken for a definitive independent reliability ranking or a survey of owner affection. The 3406 is a strong answer to the title as an argued choice; the Series 60 is the clearer answer if “respected” is intended to mean popular in the North American Class 8 market.
