Mercedes-Benz says the new CLA’s four-cylinder engine was designed and developed by Mercedes-Benz, then is being industrialized with a partner in China. That is not the same as saying a Chinese company designed or supplied the engine; Mercedes-Benz has not named the partner in the cited material. The CLA is also offered as a battery-electric car, so not every new CLA has an engine. China-specific vehicle and driver-assistance technology are separate parts of the story.
Does the new Mercedes CLA use a Chinese engine?
Not according to the distinction Mercedes-Benz makes in its 2025 Capital Market Day presentation: the four-cylinder engine for the all-new CLA was “developed and designed by Mercedes-Benz” and is “being industrialised with a partner in China.” (Mercedes-Benz Group, 2025.)
That supports saying the engine is being industrialized with a China-based partner. It does not establish that the partner designed the engine, supplied it, or owns its design. Mercedes-Benz does not identify the partner in that statement, so the available evidence does not support naming Geely, Horse, or another company as the engine’s maker.
What engine does the hybrid CLA use?
Mercedes-Benz USA describes the hybrid CLA’s M 252 as a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder using the Miller cycle. The company says the engine was developed by Mercedes-Benz. Those details come from the U.S. market’s announcement and should not be treated as a complete specification for every China-market version. (Mercedes-Benz USA, 2025.)

The CLA family is not limited to combustion power. Mercedes-Benz describes the new model range as available with either a battery-electric drivetrain or a hybrid electrified combustion-engine version. The powertrain therefore depends on the version; “the CLA engine” is not a description of every CLA. (Mercedes-Benz Group, November 6, 2024.)
What is specific to the China-market CLA?
Mercedes-Benz introduced a long-wheelbase CLA developed specifically for China at Auto Shanghai 2025. The company also describes a broader China strategy involving locally tailored content, including apps, infotainment, and automated-driving features. These are China-market development and localization measures; they do not change the stated authorship of the four-cylinder engine. The CLA is built on Mercedes-Benz’s MMA platform and uses MB.OS, the company’s operating system. Mercedes-Benz has also said MB.OS supports cloud connectivity and over-the-air updates, which can include driver-assistance software. Feature scope and rollout can vary by market. What ADAS does the China-market CLA have?
Mercedes-Benz said it planned to introduce MB.DRIVE ASSIST PRO in China first, citing the regulatory environment. In January 2026, the company said the system had been available in China since late 2025. Its availability is market- and regulation-dependent: a system described for China should not be assumed to come on every CLA trim or in every country. Mercedes-Benz characterizes ASSIST PRO as advanced SAE Level 2 driver assistance that combines navigation and driving assistance. The driver remains responsible for driving and can make steering adjustments while the system is active. It is not autonomous driving.
Hardware and computing Mercedes-Benz has disclosed
For ASSIST PRO, Mercedes-Benz lists ten cameras, five radar sensors, and twelve ultrasonic sensors—around 30 sensors in total—and says the system’s supercomputer offers up to 508 TOPS of computing capacity. Mercedes-Benz says NVIDIA provides AI, full-stack DRIVE AV software, and the DRIVE AGX platform for its next-generation assistance systems. No. Vehicle production and engine industrialization are related but distinct claims. Mercedes-Benz announced CLA production at Rastatt beginning in June 2025 and said BBAC was also due to build the CLA for China after ramp-up, including batteries and electric drive units. That announcement concerns vehicle and electric-component manufacturing; it does not identify the partner industrializing the four-cylinder engine. (Mercedes-Benz Group, 2025.)
