Consumer Reports explains that its reliability history charts draw on a subscriber survey covering about 380,000 vehicles and 20 potential trouble spots across 2000–2025 vehicles. Those are figures for the survey overall, not the number of Tucson owners surveyed. What Tucson years should you avoid?
Consumer Reports characterizes the 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2022 Tucson as less reliable than other vehicles from their respective model years. That is a caution for shoppers, not a guarantee that every example will have problems. It also does not establish that one of these Tucson years is less reliable than another. A well-maintained vehicle with documented repairs may be a better purchase than a neglected example of a year with a stronger survey description.
Pay attention to the 2018 HECU recall description
Consumer Reports’ 2018 Tucson summary describes an issue involving corrosion in the hydraulic electronic control unit (HECU), which could cause an electrical short and create an engine-compartment fire risk. Its summary says the recall population expanded to certain 2016–2018 vehicles; an earlier recall covered certain 2019–2021 Tucsons. How to check a used Tucson before you buy
- Check recalls by VIN. Use the vehicle identification number to look up open recalls and confirm repair completion with the seller or servicing dealer. A model-year count cannot tell you the status of an individual vehicle.
- Review maintenance and accident records. Look for consistent service documentation and compare the records with the seller’s account of the vehicle’s history.
- Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. Have a qualified mechanic assess the vehicle’s mechanical condition before you commit. Ask about any concerns identified and the likely repair needs.
- Compare the whole vehicle, not just its year. Weigh the records, VIN-specific recall status and inspection findings alongside the Consumer Reports description for that model year.
