Consumer Reports’ 2025 reliability survey points to the Subaru Forester and Impreza as the strongest starting points for a cautious used-car shortlist. Both were rated well above average for overall reliability. The Crosstrek, Legacy, Outback and Ascent were rated above average or average.
Those are model-level, survey-based results—not engine-failure rates for specific years or powertrains. To reduce the chance of buying an engine-trouble car, use the ratings to narrow your search, then verify the exact vehicle’s engine, maintenance history, oil use, overheating history, recall status and inspection results.

What the latest reliability evidence actually shows
Consumer Reports’ 2025 survey is useful for identifying which Subaru models deserve the first look, but it does not establish that one engine is immune to failure. Its reliability history is built from subscriber survey information and covers potential trouble spots including engines and transmissions. The categories describe the model overall, not the probability that a particular used car will suffer an engine breakdown.

The Crosstrek, Legacy, Outback and Ascent were rated above average or average. Consumer Reports’ 2024 model-reliability page says its broader reliability-history information came from a survey of about 380,000 vehicles; that figure is not a Subaru-only sample.

Steven Elek, who oversees auto data analytics at Consumer Reports, summarized one reason Subaru models can perform well in surveys: “Subaru’s cars share many reliable components.” Shared components can support a model-level reputation, but the condition and service history of the individual car still determine your risk.
Model-level comparison
| Model | Consumer Reports 2025 category | Typical buyer fit | What to verify before purchase |
|---|---|---|---|
| Forester | Well above average | Compact SUV buyers who want a practical cabin and upright seating | Exact year and engine, oil-service records, oil consumption, cooling-system condition and VIN-specific recalls |
| Impreza | Well above average | Buyers seeking a smaller, car-based hatchback or sedan format | Powertrain identification, scheduled maintenance, warning lights, leaks and prior repairs |
| Crosstrek | Above average or average | Drivers wanting a smaller crossover footprint | Service documentation, underbody condition, overheating history and recall completion |
| Legacy | Above average or average | Drivers who prefer a conventional midsize sedan | Oil-use history, engine and transmission service, VIN campaigns and independent inspection |
| Outback | Above average or average | Buyers needing a larger wagon-style crossover and cargo room | Exact engine and transmission, maintenance intervals, cooling performance and modifications |
| Ascent | Above average or average | Families seeking Subaru’s larger three-row SUV | Service completeness, recall status, signs of heavy loading or towing and a thorough inspection |
The table is a screening tool, not a ranking of engine durability. Consumer Reports did not publish, in the cited material, comparable engine-failure rates by Subaru model year and engine.
Why a reliable model can still have an engine-trouble car
A survey score reflects patterns across many vehicles. A used car can depart sharply from that pattern because of skipped oil changes, long service intervals, overheating, neglected leaks, poor repairs, modifications or an unknown engine replacement. Two cars with the same badge and model year may therefore carry very different risks.

Model generations and powertrains also change. Do not transfer a conclusion about one year, engine or transmission to another without checking the vehicle’s documentation. If a seller describes a car simply as “a reliable Forester” or “the good Impreza year,” treat that as a starting claim to verify, not as evidence.

Which used Subaru should you shortlist first?
Forester: the strongest SUV starting point in the survey
The Forester is the clearest first stop for buyers who want a Subaru SUV and are prioritizing the Consumer Reports result. Its well-above-average category makes it a sensible model to investigate before looking at lower-rated alternatives.
That rating does not remove the need to identify the exact engine and model year. Ask for dated invoices, look for consistent oil and filter service, and have a mechanic check for leaks, smoke, cooling-system problems and stored diagnostic codes. A Forester with incomplete records can be a worse purchase than a carefully maintained model that scored only above average.
Impreza: the strongest compact-car starting point
The Impreza also received a well-above-average rating and is the most straightforward choice for buyers who do not need an SUV body. Its smaller format can reduce purchase and running costs, but the same verification rules apply: confirm the engine, transmission, maintenance schedule and ownership history.

Crosstrek: crossover practicality with an intermediate evidence position
The Crosstrek was rated above average or average in the 2025 survey. It can fit buyers who want a smaller crossover, but the rating does not justify calling it safer from engine trouble than every Forester or Impreza. Compare actual candidates on service records and inspection findings.
Legacy: a sedan alternative
The Legacy’s above-average-or-average survey position makes it a reasonable sedan shortlist candidate. Check for oil-use complaints, overheating evidence, repairs and recall completion rather than assuming the sedan body style predicts engine condition.
Outback: useful when cargo space matters
The Outback belongs on a practical buyer’s list when wagon-like cargo capacity is important. Its survey category is above average or average, so condition-based screening is especially important. Confirm the exact powertrain and inspect for neglected maintenance, leaks and signs of hard use.
Ascent: inspect the individual vehicle particularly carefully
The Ascent was also in the above-average-or-average group. Its larger size may appeal to families, but a buyer should demand complete records and a comprehensive inspection. Ask whether the vehicle was regularly heavily loaded, used for towing or modified, and verify that all scheduled work was performed.

How to screen a candidate before spending money
- Write down the exact configuration. Record the model year, model, trim, engine, transmission and mileage from the vehicle and its paperwork. A finding about one generation or powertrain does not automatically apply to another.
- Request dated service invoices. Look for oil and filter changes, cooling-system work, major engine repairs and evidence of regular inspections. Undated claims or a seller’s verbal assurance are not equivalent to documentation.
- Match the records to the correct maintenance booklet. Subaru schedules vary by model year and vehicle. For example, Subaru’s 2020 schedule calls for oil and filter replacement every six months or 6,000 miles. That interval is an example for 2020 vehicles, not a universal rule for every Subaru.
- Ask direct engine-history questions. Ask how much oil the car uses between services, whether it has overheated, whether warning lights have appeared, whether the engine was rebuilt or replaced, and whether it has modifications. Treat every answer as a claim to verify.
- Check recalls with the full VIN. Use Subaru’s recall lookup with the vehicle’s complete 17-character VIN. Save the result and request documentation showing that open campaigns were completed.
- Inspect the VIN plates and paperwork. The VIN on the vehicle should match the title and service documents. Subaru’s certified-pre-owned checklist includes matching VIN plates and completing open recalls or campaigns; use those as practical verification prompts even when buying outside the CPO program.
- Arrange an independent inspection. Have a qualified mechanic inspect the actual car before purchase. A manufacturer retailer may use specialized tools, but a seller’s inspection or a certification claim should not replace your own assessment.
What an engine-focused inspection should cover
Cold start and exhaust behavior
Ask the seller not to warm the vehicle before you arrive. A cold start gives the mechanic a better chance to identify abnormal starting behavior, unusual noises, smoke or warning lights. Record what appears at startup and whether it changes as the engine reaches operating temperature.
Leaks, fluids and overheating evidence
The inspector should look for fresh or baked-on oil residue, coolant traces, damaged hoses, neglected belts where applicable and signs that the engine has run hot. Check the oil and coolant condition and verify that fluid levels are consistent with the service records. An unexplained low level deserves a documented explanation before purchase.
Electronic diagnostics and road test
A scan for stored or pending diagnostic codes can reveal problems that are not visible on the dashboard. During the road test, monitor temperature behavior, acceleration, idle quality, transmission operation and any warning lights. The mechanic should report findings in writing, including whether further testing is needed.

Look for non-factory wiring, aftermarket engine parts, tuning equipment and evidence of an engine replacement or rebuild. Confirm that the vehicle identification remains consistent across the engine bay, body and paperwork.

How to judge maintenance records
Strong records show dates, mileage, work performed and the shop that performed it. They should form a plausible sequence: routine oil service appears at reasonable intervals, major repairs have invoices, and the current mileage fits the timeline. Gaps do not prove abuse, but they increase uncertainty and should affect your price, inspection demands and willingness to walk away.
Use the maintenance booklet for the candidate’s exact year rather than relying on an internet schedule for a different model. The 2020 six-month-or-6,000-mile oil-and-filter interval illustrates why year-specific guidance matters. If the seller cannot produce the booklet, obtain the correct documentation before deciding whether the records are complete.
Recalls, campaigns and certified-pre-owned claims
Recall status belongs to the individual vehicle, not the model name. Enter the full 17-character VIN in Subaru’s recall tool and ask for proof of completed work. An open campaign should be addressed before purchase or reflected in a written agreement that specifies who will complete it and when.
Subaru’s certified-pre-owned inspection form provides useful checkpoints: VIN plates must match, and open recalls or campaigns must be completed. CPO status still does not eliminate the value of an independent inspection, because you are buying a particular used vehicle with its own prior use and maintenance history.
How to choose between two otherwise similar Subarus
| Decision question | Prefer the candidate that… | Pause or walk away when… |
|---|---|---|
| Which has the stronger evidence? | Has dated invoices that align with the correct maintenance schedule | The seller relies on verbal assurances or cannot explain large record gaps |
| Which has lower engine risk? | Shows no unexplained oil use, overheating history, warning lights or major undocumented repairs | There is smoke, persistent noise, low fluids, overheating evidence or a vague engine-replacement story |
| Which is safer to register and own? | Has a clean VIN match and documented recall completion | VIN plates do not match or recall status cannot be verified |
| Which deserves your money? | Passes an independent inspection with findings you understand | The seller refuses a pre-purchase inspection or limits access to records |
If the lower-rated model has excellent records and passes inspection while the well-above-average model has missing history and engine symptoms, choose the better-documented, better-inspected car—or keep shopping. The survey category should narrow the search, not override evidence from the vehicle in front of you.
Mistakes that undermine a reliability-focused purchase
- Buying by badge alone: A model reputation cannot document how one car was maintained.
- Generalizing across years: Engine, transmission and maintenance requirements can change between model years.
- Confusing overall reliability with engine failure odds: The available survey categories do not provide a year-by-year engine-failure ranking.
- Skipping the VIN check: Recall status is vehicle-specific and requires the full 17-character VIN.
- Accepting a warm-engine test: Insist on a cold-start opportunity so the inspection is more informative.
- Skipping an independent inspection: Even a well-rated model can have expensive problems that records and a short drive do not reveal.
Bottom line for avoiding engine trouble
Start with the Forester or Impreza because Consumer Reports’ 2025 survey rated both well above average for overall reliability. Consider the Crosstrek, Legacy, Outback or Ascent when their size and body style fit your needs, but do not treat their above-average-or-average categories as engine guarantees. The decisive evidence is vehicle-specific: exact year and powertrain, documented maintenance, oil-use and overheating history, VIN-verified recalls, matching identification and an independent inspection.
