The available owner-survey results identify several Prius years as strong against vehicles from their own model years, but do not establish which Prius year is most reliable across generations. For a used-car shortlist, the 2022, 2023 and 2025 standard Prius have encouraging same-year comparisons; that is a starting point, not proof of a cross-year winner.
What the available reliability evidence shows
Reliability ratings are not interchangeable. Consumer Reports describes its vehicle reliability charts as drawing on subscriber surveys covering about 380,000 vehicles and 20 potential trouble spots, with history charts spanning model years 2000 through 2025. That is the survey’s overall scope, not a Prius-only sample. Its available summaries say the 2022 Prius is “much more reliable” than other cars from the same model year, the 2023 Prius is “much more reliable” than its peers, and the 2025 Prius is “more reliable” than same-year vehicles. The underlying year pages do not provide verified Prius-specific sample sizes or comparable scores here, so these descriptions support within-year comparisons, not an order among Prius years.

Complaint counts and recalls answer different questions. A ranking method that weights NHTSA failure reports by sales and compares a model with vehicles in the same year’s compact passenger-car segment is not equivalent to an owner survey or a recall count. Without verified underlying results, it cannot establish a Prius year order. No comparable ten-year Prius reliability statistic is established by the sources available for this article.
Which Prius years belong on a buyer’s shortlist?
The strongest evidence-based shortlist is deliberately limited to the three model years with available same-year survey summaries. They should not be read as ranked first, second and third: the findings do not compare them directly with one another, and the 2025 car has less time in service than older models.

- 2022 Prius: Consumer Reports describes it as much more reliable than other cars from the 2022 model year. This is a positive peer comparison, not a cross-year score.
- 2023 Prius: Consumer Reports likewise describes it as much more reliable than same-year peers. Toyota’s January 28, 2026 U.S. announcement also covers approximately 142,000 certain 2023–2026 Prius vehicles in a rear-door switch recall; check the individual vehicle’s status and remedy completion before buying.
- 2025 Prius: Consumer Reports describes it as more reliable than same-year vehicles. That comparison does not show it outperforming older Prius models, and its ownership history is necessarily less mature.
These are the years for which the available summaries give a positive reliability comparison. The evidence does not justify filling out seven more model years to make a top ten, or assigning numerical scores or precise places.
Recall history: what a buyer should check
Certain 2010–2014 Prius and 2012–2014 Prius v
Toyota Motor Sales, USA’s December 20, 2018 J0V recall FAQ describes a hybrid-system software condition affecting certain 2010–2014 Prius and 2012–2014 Prius v vehicles. In a rare condition, a vehicle might not enter failsafe mode as intended and could lose power and stall. Toyota said dealers would provide a free software update. The notice states: “The involved vehicles were designed to enter a failsafe driving mode in response to certain hybrid system faults.” That describes the system’s design context; it is not a guarantee about an individual car. Read Toyota’s J0V recall FAQ and confirm that any applicable remedy was completed.

Certain 2023–2026 Prius
In a January 28, 2026 announcement, Toyota said approximately 142,000 certain Prius vehicles in the United States were subject to a rear-door switch recall. Water could enter an electric rear-door switch and potentially activate it when the doors were unlocked. Toyota said dealers would modify the switch circuits free of charge. The announcement’s approximate vehicle count is not a determination that every Prius in those model years is affected; check coverage and completion by VIN at the time of purchase. A recall is a campaign to address a condition, not a reliability score or proof that a specific car still has an unrepaired defect. Toyota’s recall lookup accepts a VIN or license plate for U.S. safety recall and service-campaign searches. Use it on the actual car, rather than relying on a model-year list.

How to choose between individual used Priuses
A favorable model-year comparison cannot tell you whether a particular used car was maintained well, has accident damage or has an open recall. Before committing, review the vehicle’s records and arrange an independent inspection. Give greater weight to the individual car’s documented condition than to an unsupported year ranking.
- Confirm the exact model and history. Make sure you are comparing the standard Prius with the same body style and market. Prius, Prius Prime, Prius c and Prius v are distinct models; the cited 2018 campaign, for example, identifies Prius v separately. Review maintenance documentation, mileage, title status and accident history.
- Check recalls for that vehicle. Enter its VIN or license plate in Toyota’s U.S. recall lookup. Ask for documentation of completed remedies, including the 2018 hybrid-system software update or 2026 rear-door switch repair if applicable.
- Have the car inspected. An independent mechanic can assess condition and identify concerns a model-year rating cannot. Consider the inspection findings alongside service records and the car’s use.
- Verify warranty terms for the car and your location. Toyota’s owner portal lists a 2015 Prius Warranty and Maintenance Guide. Toyota says hybrid-vehicle HV batteries beginning with model year 2020 are covered for 10 years from first use or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first, subject to warranty terms. Do not assume coverage transfers or applies identically to every used car; check the applicable booklet and terms. Toyota’s owner resources provide manuals and warranty information.
Why this is not a top-10 ranking
A real top ten requires comparable evidence across ten Prius model years. The available Consumer Reports descriptions provide only a few within-year peer comparisons, without common cross-year scores; recall notices identify specific campaigns, not which years are most reliable overall. Years in service, data maturity, market and body style also differ. Until comparable cross-year data can support the order, a precise top-ten list would imply more certainty than the evidence allows.
