Toyota offers a wider range of powertrains, including a conventional hybrid and the high-output Hybrid MAX; Lexus adds a plug-in-hybrid V6 in the TX 550h+ and a more premium brand position. The right comparison depends on the exact trim, seating layout and drivetrain—not just the model name.
Powertrains: Toyota offers more kinds of hybrid
The Grand Highlander was offered with three powertrains: a 2.4-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, a 2.5-liter conventional hybrid, and a 2.4-liter turbo Hybrid MAX. The TX lineup consists of the TX 350 with a 2.4-liter turbo gasoline engine, the TX 500h with a 2.4-liter turbo hybrid, and the TX 550h+ with a 3.5-liter V6 plug-in hybrid. Toyota’s conventional hybrid is not a plug-in; the TX 550h+ is the plug-in option in this comparison.

Toyota’s output figures come from its 2023 launch announcement; Lexus’s TX figures come from its 2024 brochure. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance-test results. The closest broad powertrain comparisons are gas against gas and turbo hybrid against turbo hybrid, but the systems and outputs are not identical.

Fuel economy: compare the named configuration
Toyota’s launch announcement reported 24 combined MPG for the Grand Highlander XLE with front-wheel drive and the gas engine, 36 combined MPG for the XLE with front-wheel drive and the conventional hybrid, and 27 combined MPG for Hybrid MAX. These are configuration-specific manufacturer estimates, not a single MPG figure for every Grand Highlander. No equivalent TX MPG figures are provided here, so it would be misleading to declare a fuel-economy winner from these numbers alone.

Price: launch MSRPs are historical, not today’s used prices
At launch, Toyota listed starting MSRPs of $43,070 for the gas Grand Highlander, $44,670 for the conventional hybrid, and $54,040 for Hybrid MAX. Lexus listed a $55,050 starting MSRP for the TX and specifies that it includes DPH. These are 2023-announced launch-era figures for 2024 models, not current used-car asking prices or transaction values. They also compare entry prices across different lineups, not necessarily similarly equipped vehicles.
For a used purchase, compare local examples with the same or closely matched powertrain and equipment, then account for mileage and condition. A Grand Highlander Hybrid MAX should not be treated as a direct price stand-in for a base gas TX 350, for example.

Seating and cargo: verify the actual layout
The TX 350 can seat seven, while Lexus specifies six-passenger captain’s-chair layouts for the TX 500h and TX 550h+. Seating capacity therefore varies within the TX range. For either model, check whether the individual vehicle has a second-row bench or captain’s chairs and how many passengers its configuration accommodates.
Lexus publishes cargo figures using more than one seat-position description. Its 2023 launch release lists 20.2 cubic feet behind the third row and 57.4 cubic feet with the third row folded. The 2024 brochure lists 20.2 cubic feet with seats up and 97.0 cubic feet with seats down. Those descriptions are not interchangeable: the 57.4 figure specifically refers to folding the third row, while “seats down” describes a different configuration. Confirm which rows are folded before comparing cargo capacity with a Grand Highlander figure or planning to carry a particular load.

Towing and safety equipment
Toyota reports towing capacity of up to 5,000 pounds for the Grand Highlander Hybrid MAX. Lexus says all TX powertrains can tow up to 5,000 pounds. “Up to” is the manufacturers’ stated ceiling, not a guarantee for every vehicle or load; verify the particular vehicle’s required equipment and applicable limits in its owner’s manual.
Toyota names Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 as the Grand Highlander’s safety suite, while Lexus names Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 for the TX. A shared “3.0” label does not establish that every feature is identical, standard on every grade, or available under the same operating conditions. Compare the equipment list for the exact trim rather than relying on the suite name.

Which one fits your priorities?
- Choose the Grand Highlander lineup to investigate first if you want a conventional hybrid choice alongside gas and Hybrid MAX options. Toyota’s launch figures also show a 36 combined MPG estimate for the specific XLE FWD conventional-hybrid configuration.
- Look at the TX 550h+ if a plug-in-hybrid powertrain is central to your search; it is the plug-in variant among these lineups.
- Compare TX 500h and Grand Highlander Hybrid MAX carefully if you are focused on turbo-hybrid power. Their manufacturer-reported outputs are 366 and 362 hp respectively, but similar headline numbers do not make the vehicles or systems identical.
- Check the passenger layout before deciding if you need seven seats: the TX 350 is specified for seven, while the two TX hybrid variants have six-seat captain’s-chair configurations.
- Decide based on the actual vehicle’s value and equipment rather than the old starting MSRPs. The figures above describe launch pricing; they cannot tell you what a comparable used SUV costs in your area now.
