The Most Reliable Midsize Pickup Trucks in 2024 in the USA

The 2024 Nissan Frontier is the most defensible reliability-first conventional pickup, but the Toyota Tacoma has the strongest historical record and the Honda Ridgeline is the best daily-use choice. Here is how all seven U.S. midsize trucks compare, including redesign risk, recalls, towing trade-offs, and a used-truck inspection checklist.

If reliability is the priority, the 2024 Nissan Frontier is the most defensible choice among conventional midsize pickups—but only by a narrow, evidence-based margin. Its current U.S. generation began with the 2022 model year, it uses a naturally aspirated 3.8-liter V6 and nine-speed automatic, and Consumer Reports currently describes the 2024 Frontier as much more reliable than other vehicles from the same model year.

The Toyota Tacoma remains the strongest historical durability and resale bet. It ranked first among midsize pickups in the 2024 J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study, and its long-term reputation is well established. However, the 2024 Tacoma is an all-new generation with new turbocharged and hybrid powertrains, so older Tacoma results cannot yet prove how every 2024 model will perform over 10 years.

For buyers who primarily commute, carry family members, haul recreational equipment, and tow moderate loads, the Honda Ridgeline is the best practical ownership choice. It is a unibody pickup rather than a traditional body-on-frame truck, and its 2024 reliability evidence is about average—not clearly superior—but its mature V6 drivetrain, comfortable ride, in-bed trunk, and useful tailgate make it an excellent fit for many owners.

This is a retrospective assessment of 2024 model-year trucks using evidence available through August 2026. Reliability surveys are updated as more owner data arrives, and no survey can guarantee that an individual truck will avoid expensive repairs.

Which trucks are included?

This comparison covers the midsize pickups generally sold and cross-shopped in the United States for the 2024 model year:

  • Chevrolet Colorado
  • GMC Canyon
  • Ford Ranger
  • Honda Ridgeline
  • Jeep Gladiator
  • Nissan Frontier
  • Toyota Tacoma

Segment definitions vary. The Ridgeline is included because many shoppers compare it with these trucks even though it uses unibody construction and standard all-wheel drive rather than a separate body and frame. The Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz are normally considered compact pickups and are outside this comparison.

The 2024 reliability ranking at a glance

Rank Model 2024-specific evidence Platform maturity Best suited to Verdict
1 Nissan Frontier Much more reliable than other 2024 vehicles, according to current Consumer Reports owner data Current U.S. generation began in 2022 Reliability-first traditional truck buyers Best risk-adjusted conventional choice
2 Toyota Tacoma More reliable than other 2024 vehicles; excellent historical evidence Completely redesigned for 2024 Long-term durability, resale, and off-road use Best historical durability bet, but not the lowest first-year risk
3 Honda Ridgeline About average for 2024 reliability Mature V6-based unibody design Commuting, family use, light hauling, and moderate towing Best practical daily-use pickup
4 Ford Ranger About average for 2024 reliability Redesigned for 2024 in the U.S. Towing, payload, and modern technology Capable, but early-production evidence is limited
5 Chevrolet Colorado Less reliable than other 2024 vehicles Redesigned for 2023 Towing and off-road capability Strong capability, weaker reliability evidence
6 GMC Canyon Less reliable than other 2024 vehicles Shares major architecture and powertrain components with Colorado Premium trim and cabin appointments Premium Colorado alternative, not a mechanical reliability alternative
7 Jeep Gladiator Use current model-year data cautiously; the evidence is less favorable than the Frontier/Tacoma case Established Wrangler-derived design Open-air driving and serious trail use Buy for its unique mission, not reliability-first ownership

This is an editorial ranking rather than a claim that one truck has a precisely measured failure rate lower than every competitor. The available sources measure different things, cover different model years, and do not provide directly comparable data for every 2024 configuration.

How reliability was judged

Reliability is not one number. A useful 2024 comparison needs to separate current owner experience from older-vehicle dependability, historical longevity, repair costs, and official defect campaigns.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Current owner-reported reliability

Consumer Reports gathers owner survey data across areas such as the engine, transmission, drive system, brakes, climate system, body hardware, electronics, and other components. Its predicted reliability uses recent history to estimate how a vehicle may perform, but a redesign makes older data less predictive.

The most relevant current 2024 descriptions are:

  • Frontier: much more reliable than other vehicles from the same model year.
  • Tacoma: more reliable than other vehicles from the same model year.
  • Ridgeline: about average.
  • Ranger: about average.
  • Colorado: less reliable than other vehicles from the same model year.
  • Canyon: less reliable than other vehicles from the same model year.
  • Gladiator: current evidence should be interpreted cautiously and is not as favorable as the leading Frontier and Tacoma cases.

These are descriptions, not numeric scores. Converting them into invented percentages or decimal rankings would suggest a level of precision the source does not provide.

Three-year dependability

The 2024 J.D. Power U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study measured problems experienced by owners of three-year-old vehicles. Its midsize-pickup ranking was:

  1. Toyota Tacoma
  2. Chevrolet Colorado
  3. Ford Ranger

That result is useful historical evidence, but it primarily reflects 2021 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership. It does not directly establish the reliability of a new 2024 Tacoma, Ranger, or Colorado. In particular, the 2024 Tacoma is a different generation from the truck represented by the study.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Long-term durability

iSeeCars long-term research uses vehicle lifespan and the likelihood of reaching high-mileage thresholds. This is valuable for identifying durable historical vehicle populations, but it cannot prove the 200,000-mile performance of a truck that was new for 2024. A 2024 Tacoma, for example, has not had enough time to create a large population of high-mileage examples.

Repair frequency, cost, and severity

RepairPal combines repair cost, frequency, and severity using repair-invoice data. Its model-level results generally span multiple model years. RepairPal gives the Tacoma a 3.5 out of 5 reliability rating and reports an average annual repair cost of $478 across model years, but that should be treated as supporting historical evidence—not a direct measurement of the all-new 2024 Tacoma.

Recalls and complaints

Recalls are important ownership evidence, but they are not a reliability score. A recall may affect a limited build range, involve a relatively simple software or hardware remedy, or identify a serious safety risk. Conversely, a vehicle can have few recalls and still experience non-recall warranty problems.

Recall totals also change as manufacturers and regulators add campaigns. A VIN-specific NHTSA search is more useful than counting model-wide campaigns.

The editorial weighting

If the evidence is organized into a decision framework, a reasonable weighting is:

Criterion Suggested weight What it measures
2024-specific owner reliability 30% Problems reported by owners of the actual model year
Historical three-year dependability 20% Evidence from older vehicles after meaningful use
Powertrain and platform maturity 20% Whether the 2024 truck is a first-year redesign or uses a newly introduced system
Recalls and documented defects 15% Official safety campaigns and known defect exposure
Repair cost and severity 10% Potential long-term financial risk
Warranty and dealer support 5% Recovery options when something does go wrong

The weighting explains the ranking, but the data is not sufficiently uniform to justify a fabricated overall reliability score.

1. Nissan Frontier: the best risk-adjusted conventional choice

The Frontier earns the top spot because it combines the strongest current 2024 owner-reliability description with a platform that was not launched from scratch for 2024. The current U.S. generation arrived for 2022, giving Nissan and its suppliers additional production experience before the 2024 model year.

It uses a naturally aspirated 3.8-liter V6 and a conventional nine-speed automatic. Those specifications do not guarantee reliability, but they avoid the additional hybrid hardware in the Tacoma i-FORCE MAX and the turbocharged engine systems used by several rivals. That is a reasonable risk-minimization consideration, not proof that a naturally aspirated engine will always outlast a turbocharged one. Nissan’s available drivetrain specifications are documented in its Frontier brochure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The decisive evidence is the current Consumer Reports 2024 reliability description: the Frontier is classified as much more reliable than other vehicles from the same model year. That gives it a better 2024-specific case than a truck whose reputation depends primarily on older generations.

The Frontier’s qualification

Certain 2024 Frontiers were included in NHTSA recall 24V-479 involving a front lower-link ball-joint condition that could allow separation. A buyer should not assume that a favorable reliability description means the truck is recall-free. Check the VIN and confirm that the remedy has been completed.

The Frontier also gives up some refinement. Its interior, rear-seat space, infotainment experience, and ride quality are less polished than the Ridgeline or some newer competitors. Those are not necessarily reliability failures, but they matter to an owner who spends every day in the truck.

Who should buy it?

Choose the Frontier if you want a traditional body-on-frame pickup, do not need the newest cabin technology, and value a relatively mature powertrain and favorable 2024 owner evidence. For a reliability-focused configuration, prioritize a truck with complete service records, no aftermarket engine or suspension modifications, and the simplest equipment that meets your needs. There is no evidence here proving that one specific Frontier trim is universally more reliable than another.

2. Toyota Tacoma: the strongest historical durability bet

The Tacoma is the truck most likely to be recommended by reputation alone, and that reputation is not baseless. It has the strongest historical durability case in this group, strong resale demand, and the top midsize-pickup position in J.D. Power’s 2024 three-year dependability study.

Consumer Reports’ current 2024 data is also favorable, describing the Tacoma as more reliable than other vehicles from the same model year. That makes the Tacoma a strong candidate—but not conclusive proof that every 2024 Tacoma is the segment’s most reliable truck.

Why the 2024 model requires caution

The 2024 Tacoma is a complete redesign. It introduced a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine and the available i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain, rather than carrying forward the previous generation’s exact mechanical package. Toyota rates the i-FORCE MAX at up to 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque; the non-hybrid truck uses the 2.4-liter turbocharged engine alone. The official Tacoma overview and i-FORCE MAX announcement describe the redesign and powertrains.

New electronics, wiring architecture, calibrations, supplier parts, transmissions, and production processes can create first-year issues even when the underlying brand has an excellent record. That does not mean the 2024 Tacoma is unreliable. It means the previous Tacoma’s reputation should not be transferred automatically to the new one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There have also been reports of 2024 Tacoma transmission failures in automotive media. These are owner-reported complaints, not a confirmed failure rate or proof of a universal defect. They should prompt a careful test drive and VIN check, not an unsupported claim that every Tacoma has a transmission problem. A separate Toyota engine investigation involving other models should not be conflated with 2024 Tacoma evidence; see the NHTSA investigation document.

Which Tacoma is the lower-risk configuration?

A reliability-first buyer may reasonably favor the non-hybrid powertrain over the i-FORCE MAX because it has fewer hybrid-specific components and control systems. That is an editorial risk-minimization inference, not proof that the hybrid system is unreliable. The same principle applies to choosing a truck without extensive aftermarket modifications, oversized tires, or accessories that place extra demands on electrical and suspension systems.

Who should buy it?

The Tacoma is the best choice for someone who values historical durability, resale strength, Toyota’s established truck ecosystem, and off-road capability enough to accept the uncertainty of a first-year redesign. It is not the clearest answer for a buyer whose only goal is minimizing 2024-specific new-model risk; that is where the Frontier has the stronger case.

3. Honda Ridgeline: the best practical daily-use pickup

The Ridgeline deserves a high position because reliability shopping should begin with the owner’s actual needs, not with a body-on-frame purity test. It uses unibody construction, meaning the body and frame are integrated rather than built as separate structures. It also has standard all-wheel drive, a car-like ride, a practical cabin, an in-bed trunk, and a dual-action tailgate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 2024 Ridgeline uses a 280-horsepower V6 and nine-speed automatic. Honda lists a 5,000-pound towing capacity and a 1,583-pound payload rating in its 2024 Ridgeline specifications. Those numbers make it suitable for small boats, utility trailers, motorcycles, landscaping materials, appliances, bicycles, camping gear, and ordinary household hauling.

Why it is not the objective reliability winner

Current Consumer Reports data classifies the 2024 Ridgeline as about average. It would be inaccurate to call it exceptionally reliable merely because Honda has a good general reputation.

Certain 2020–2024 Ridgeline vehicles were also affected by NHTSA recall 24V-321, in which a tailgate wiring-harness issue could affect the rearview camera. The recall is a reminder to verify the individual vehicle rather than rely on the brand name.

Who should buy it?

Choose the Ridgeline if you need an open bed more than you need a traditional truck chassis. It is particularly well suited to commuting, family transportation, light hauling, moderate towing, and owners who value comfort and storage. It is less suitable for repeated heavy towing, severe-duty work, serious rock crawling, or anyone who requires a low-range transfer case and traditional truck hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Calling it a truck or not a truck misses the useful question: does its engineering match the work you will actually do?

4. Ford Ranger: capable and modern, but still a first-year redesign

The U.S.-market Ranger was redesigned for 2024. It gained a more modern cabin and stronger capability, with a standard 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder and an available 2.7-liter turbocharged V6. Ford lists up to 7,500 pounds of towing and 1,805 pounds of payload for qualifying configurations; the official Ranger overview and 2024 towing guide show why the exact configuration matters.

The Ranger’s current Consumer Reports reliability description is about average. J.D. Power placed the Ranger third among midsize pickups in its 2024 dependability study, but that study primarily represents older vehicles, not the redesigned 2024 U.S. truck.

Certain 2024 Rangers were included in NHTSA recall 24V-770 involving front upper-control-arm ball-joint fasteners that could allow separation. This does not establish that the Ranger has poor overall reliability, but it reinforces the need for a VIN-specific recall search and a careful inspection of an early-production truck.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who should buy it?

The Ranger makes sense for a buyer who values towing, payload, the optional V6, or Ford’s technology and dealer network more than having the longest 2024 track record. It is reliable enough to remain on a purchase shortlist, but it does not have the mature-generation advantage of the Frontier or the long historical record of the Tacoma.

5. Chevrolet Colorado and 6. GMC Canyon: capable twins with weaker reliability evidence

The Colorado and Canyon should be considered together before their trim and interior differences are discussed. They share major architecture and the same 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine family. The Canyon generally differentiates itself through styling, cabin materials, trim packaging, and equipment—not through a mechanically separate reliability strategy.

The Colorado was redesigned for 2023, so the 2024 model is not technically a first-year redesign in the same way as the Tacoma or Ranger. It is still a relatively new generation, however. Both trucks use a turbocharged engine across the lineup, which makes software, engine management, cooling, turbocharger operation, electronics, and transmission calibration important inspection areas. Turbocharging itself is not proof of poor reliability.

Colorado models can tow up to 7,700 pounds when properly equipped. That is a configuration-dependent maximum, not a rating that applies to every truck. Trailer tongue weight also counts against payload.

Colorado reliability

Consumer Reports currently rates the 2024 Colorado as less reliable than other vehicles from the same model year. That does not make it a bad truck in every respect. The Colorado can be an excellent choice for towing and off-road capability, but capability and reliability are different measurements.

Canyon reliability

Consumer Reports also rates the 2024 Canyon below average relative to other 2024 vehicles and identifies owner reports involving blank infotainment screens and battery-related problems. Those reports should not be treated as a universal failure rate, but they are relevant to a buyer evaluating a heavily electronic premium truck.

The Canyon may be worth paying extra for if its cabin, trim, or appearance is important. It should not automatically be presented as more dependable than the Colorado simply because it carries a GMC badge.

Who should buy them?

Choose a Colorado or Canyon when the truck’s towing, payload, off-road trim, or equipment is more important than obtaining the strongest available reliability evidence. Before buying, test every screen and camera, inspect the electrical system for aftermarket accessories, and verify that software updates and recalls have been completed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Jeep Gladiator: include it, but judge it by a different mission

The Gladiator is a legitimate midsize pickup, but its principal reasons to buy are its removable roof and doors, Wrangler relationship, solid-axle off-road hardware, and open-air character. It offers a 3.6-liter V6 and unique trail capability that the other trucks cannot duplicate in the same way.

Those strengths also bring compromises in highway quietness, ride quality, fuel economy, packaging, and everyday refinement. A Gladiator modified for serious off-road use may carry additional reliability risk from larger tires, suspension changes, water crossings, underbody impacts, winches, auxiliary lighting, and electrical accessories.

Certain 2022–2024 Gladiators were included in NHTSA recall 24V-652 because the instrument-panel cluster could become blank. Current model-year evidence should be used cautiously, but the Gladiator is not the reliability-first recommendation here.

Who should buy it?

Buy the Gladiator because you specifically want open-air trail driving and Wrangler-style capability. Do not buy it expecting the quietest highway truck, the best family pickup, the most efficient commuter, or the lowest-risk ownership choice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which 2024 midsize pickup is best for your use?

Best conventional truck for reliability-first buyers: Nissan Frontier

The Frontier has the best combination of favorable 2024 owner evidence, a current generation that began in 2022, and a conventional naturally aspirated V6 drivetrain. Verify the lower-link recall by VIN and accept its less polished interior and ride.

Best historical durability and resale bet: Toyota Tacoma

The Tacoma has the segment’s strongest historical reputation and the best three-year dependability evidence. Treat the 2024 truck as a new-generation vehicle, not as a guaranteed continuation of every older Tacoma’s record.

Best daily-use and family pickup: Honda Ridgeline

The Ridgeline is the most sensible choice when comfort, rear-seat usability, bed storage, and moderate towing matter more than body-on-frame construction or extreme off-road hardware. Its 2024 reliability evidence is average, so do not confuse practicality with a proven reliability victory.

Best towing-focused shortlist: Ford Ranger or Chevrolet Colorado

The Ranger can tow up to 7,500 pounds and the Colorado up to 7,700 pounds in properly equipped configurations. Those numbers do not establish superior reliability. Confirm the exact truck’s door-jamb payload label, hitch equipment, cooling configuration, and trailer rating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best premium Colorado-family alternative: GMC Canyon

The Canyon offers different styling and equipment, but its shared architecture and powertrain mean buyers should not expect an automatic reliability advantage over the Colorado.

Best open-air off-road lifestyle truck: Jeep Gladiator

The Gladiator is the specialist choice for removable roof and doors and Wrangler-style trails. Its unique capability is a reason to buy it; reliability-first ownership is not.

Why first-year redesigns matter

The Tacoma and Ranger were redesigned for 2024. The Colorado and Canyon were redesigned for 2023. A first-year or relatively new generation can introduce software bugs, new wiring architectures, transmission calibrations, supplier-quality problems, production-process defects, parts shortages, or longer repair times.

This is not a prediction that every new design will be unreliable. It is a reason to give more weight to actual 2024 owner data and less weight to a predecessor’s reputation. The Frontier benefits from having entered its current U.S. generation in 2022, while the Tacoma’s excellent historical record cannot yet demonstrate 10-year durability for the 2024 redesign.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Turbocharged and hybrid powertrains: what buyers should—and should not—conclude

The Ranger, Colorado, Canyon, and Tacoma use turbocharged engines. Turbocharging is not inherently unreliable, and there is no basis for claiming that all turbo engines will fail sooner. It does add components and operating conditions that deserve proper maintenance, including the turbocharger, intercooling system, engine-management controls, higher cylinder pressures, and greater sensitivity to oil quality and service intervals.

The Tacoma i-FORCE MAX adds a turbocharged hybrid system, electric motor, battery, and additional control software. A buyer who wants to minimize system complexity may prefer the non-hybrid Tacoma, but that is a cautious configuration choice—not evidence that the hybrid is defective.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Configuration can matter as much as the model name

A base truck and a highly equipped off-road hybrid may share a model name while having very different reliability exposure. Consider:

  • Two-wheel drive versus four-wheel drive.
  • Non-hybrid versus hybrid powertrains.
  • Turbocharged versus naturally aspirated engines.
  • Automatic or manual transmission, where offered.
  • Off-road suspension, locking differentials, and additional cameras.
  • Larger wheels and heavier tires.
  • Frequent towing or maximum-payload use.
  • Salt exposure, flood exposure, and severe weather.
  • Aftermarket lifts, tuners, winches, lighting, and electrical accessories.
  • Dealer service quality and maintenance history.

For commercial, construction, landscaping, snow-plow, rural, or severe off-road use, ordinary owner surveys may not represent the stresses the truck will experience. A truck that is dependable as a commuter may not be the best tool for continuous maximum-load towing or heavy idling.

Recalls are important—but they are not a reliability leaderboard

Examples affecting some vehicles in this comparison include:

  • 2024 Nissan Frontier: a front lower-link ball-joint issue that could create a separation risk; see NHTSA 24V-479.
  • 2020–2024 Honda Ridgeline: a tailgate wiring-harness problem that could affect the rearview camera; see NHTSA 24V-321.
  • 2024 Ford Ranger: certain front upper-control-arm ball-joint fasteners could allow separation; see NHTSA 24V-770.
  • 2022–2024 Jeep Gladiator: the instrument-panel cluster could become blank; see NHTSA 24V-652.
  • 2024 Toyota Tacoma: recall campaigns can change over time, so check the individual VIN rather than relying on a model-wide count.

Use the NHTSA recall lookup and the manufacturer’s owner portal. A recall that has been properly repaired is usually a reason to verify the work—not automatically a reason to reject the vehicle.

Used 2024 truck inspection checklist

A lightly used 2024 pickup can be a better value than a new one, but its ownership history matters more than the badge. Complete these checks before buying:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Run the VIN through NHTSA and the manufacturer. Search by VIN or license plate, then check the manufacturer’s recall portal for campaigns that may not yet appear identically in every database.
  2. Confirm that recalls are closed. Ask for repair orders and verify that the work was completed, not merely announced or scheduled.
  3. Look for warning messages. Check the instrument cluster for engine, transmission, four-wheel-drive, hybrid, brake, camera, steering, and driver-assistance warnings.
  4. Test all electronics. Operate every camera, screen, USB port, 12-volt outlet, window, lock, climate control, tailgate latch, bed light, and trailer connector. Watch for blank displays, resets, flickering, or delayed operation.
  5. Drive at different speeds. Listen for driveline vibration, abnormal turbo noise, steering looseness, brake pulsation, axle noise, gear hunting, harsh shifts, and hesitation. Test cold operation if possible.
  6. Inspect the underbody. Look for frame or suspension impact damage, bent skid plates, leaking shocks, fluid leaks, corrosion, and evidence of water crossings or hard off-road use. Pay special attention to trucks from regions that use road salt.
  7. Check the payload label. Read the door-jamb label and compare its payload rating with passengers, cargo, accessories, and trailer tongue weight. Do not rely only on a brochure’s maximum figure.
  8. Inspect towing equipment if towing is planned. Check the hitch, wiring, trailer-brake controller, cooling system, transmission behavior, and service history. A previous owner may have regularly operated the truck near its maximum rating.
  9. Request maintenance records. Confirm oil-change intervals, tire rotations, differential and transfer-case services where applicable, software updates, and repairs. Missing records are a risk signal, even when the odometer reading is low.
  10. Pay for an independent inspection. Have a mechanic who is not connected to the seller inspect the drivetrain, suspension, electronics, frame, fluids, and signs of accident or flood damage before purchase.

Common mistakes in reliability comparisons

Confusing an overall comparison winner with the most reliable truck

A truck can win an overall test because of ride quality, interior design, towing, off-road performance, technology, safety, or price. None of those categories alone proves that it will require fewer repairs.

Treating the Tacoma reputation as a 2024 model-year fact

“Tacoma is reliable” is a reasonable historical statement. It is too broad when used to describe every 2024 Tacoma without distinguishing previous generations, the new turbocharged engine, the i-FORCE MAX hybrid, current owner data, and older three-year dependability results.

Using the J.D. Power 2024 study as if it tested 2024 vehicles

The study measured three-year-old vehicles, primarily 2021 model years. It is evidence of historical dependability, not a direct 2024-new-truck failure study.

Excluding the Ridgeline because it is unibody

Many buyers need an open bed and all-wheel drive but never need a separate frame, low-range transfer case, or extreme off-road hardware. Excluding the Ridgeline would ignore a significant practical use case.

Counting recalls instead of understanding them

Recall counts do not reveal how many vehicles are affected, whether the defect is cosmetic or safety-critical, how difficult the remedy is, or whether the issue appears outside the affected production range.

Ranking Colorado and Canyon as mechanically independent alternatives

The two trucks differ in presentation and equipment, but their shared architecture and powertrain family mean a Canyon is not automatically a reliability upgrade over a Colorado.

Ignoring trim-level exposure

Additional cameras, hybrid hardware, off-road components, larger tires, complex suspension systems, and aftermarket accessories can change repair costs and failure exposure. Compare the exact configuration, not just the model name.

Final verdict

The 2024 Nissan Frontier is the best reliability-first recommendation for a traditional midsize pickup because its current generation is more mature than the newly redesigned Tacoma and Ranger, and its 2024 owner data is especially favorable. It is not flawless, and a VIN-specific recall and maintenance check remains essential.

The Toyota Tacoma is still the strongest historical durability and resale bet. Its reputation is well earned, but the all-new 2024 generation deserves more caution than older Tacomas because its turbocharged and hybrid powertrains do not yet have a decade of evidence.

The Honda Ridgeline is the strongest practical choice for drivers who need an open bed more than a traditional truck chassis. The Ranger, Colorado, and Canyon make sense when capability or equipment takes priority, while the Gladiator is a specialist purchase for open-air off-roading rather than low-risk daily transportation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the 2024 Toyota Tacoma more reliable than the 2024 Nissan Frontier?

The available evidence does not prove that conclusively. The Tacoma has the stronger historical durability record and won the midsize-pickup category in J.D. Power’s 2024 three-year dependability study, while Consumer Reports’ current 2024 data favors both trucks and describes the Frontier more strongly. Because the Tacoma was completely redesigned for 2024, the Frontier is the safer risk-adjusted conventional choice, while the Tacoma remains the better historical durability bet.

Is the Honda Ridgeline a real pickup truck?

Yes, it is a pickup, but it uses unibody construction rather than a traditional body-on-frame layout. That design delivers a smoother ride, useful interior space, an in-bed trunk, and a dual-action tailgate. It is well suited to daily driving, family use, light hauling, and moderate towing, but it is less suitable for repeated heavy towing or serious rock crawling.

Should I avoid a 2024 truck because it has a recall?

Not automatically. A recall identifies a specific safety or compliance issue and is not a complete reliability score. Check the vehicle identification number, confirm that the repair has been completed, and have the truck independently inspected. A properly repaired vehicle can still be a sound purchase.

Which 2024 midsize pickup is best for towing?

The Ford Ranger can tow up to 7,500 pounds and the Chevrolet Colorado up to 7,700 pounds in properly equipped configurations. These are maximum ratings, not universal figures. Check the exact truck’s tow package, cooling system, door-jamb payload label, trailer tongue weight, and brake-controller equipment before buying.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Choose the 2024 Nissan Frontier for the best risk-adjusted conventional reliability case, the Toyota Tacoma for the strongest historical durability and resale argument, and the Honda Ridgeline for the most practical everyday ownership experience. Whichever truck you choose, verify the VIN, complete every recall repair, review the maintenance history, and obtain an independent inspection before purchasing a used example.
