The Mercedes-Benz W124 diesel has one of the strongest historical reliability cases, but no available evidence proves it is the most reliable Mercedes-Benz ever built. The W123 is a close classic-era durability rival; for a current longevity ranking, iSeeCars names the G-Class its top Mercedes model under its own category-based method. Those conclusions measure different things, so the answer depends on whether you mean breakdown rates, long-term durability or a modern model ranking.
Why there is no single objective winner
“Most reliable” can mean fewer breakdowns, fewer defects at inspection, lower repair costs, or a greater chance of lasting a long time. Those measures can produce different winners. The result also depends on model year, engine, vehicle age, market, maintenance and the cars included in the comparison.
Current fleet statistics cannot establish which Mercedes held up best over its entire service life, while a longevity ranking is not the same as a breakdown-rate study. The available evidence supports a strong case for the W124 diesel among classic Mercedes, not a definitive all-time crown.
The W124 diesel’s historical reliability case
A secondary account of an ADAC reliability survey reports that the diesel W124 topped the “upper middle class” category for four-to-six-year-old cars. It gives rates of 11.8 breakdowns per 1,000 vehicles for four-year-old cars and 21.6 per 1,000 for six-year-old cars. The same account compares those figures with 14.6 per 1,000 four-year-old Audi 100s and 27.3 per 1,000 six-year-old large Audis. The account attributes the survey to ADAC and cites an ADAC Motorwelt article from May 1996; the original article was not available to verify directly.
#1 Best Overall
These figures are a historical result for a particular age cohort and class, not a lifetime failure rate for every W124. They support the diesel W124 as a compelling contender, but do not establish that it beats every Mercedes generation or every engine and body configuration.
W123 vs. W124: which classic is more reliable?
Both generations have durable reputations, and a contemporary automotive editorial ranks the W124 and W123 as its top two choices among reliable used Mercedes. That is evidence of editorial consensus, not a transparent, comparable model-wide reliability dataset. The historical ADAC result gives the W124 diesel a more specific statistical case, but it does not settle a head-to-head comparison across all W123 and W124 variants.

For a car you might actually buy, the specific vehicle matters more than the badge or reputation. Compare its engine and year, corrosion, service records, previous repairs, inspection findings, repair complexity, and the availability of parts and specialists where you live. A well-maintained example with sound structure may be a better prospect than a neglected car from the generation with the stronger reputation.
What current reliability and longevity rankings say
ADAC’s 2026 breakdown statistics analyze data for widely registered vehicles in Germany. Its consumer-facing methodology compares combustion and battery-electric vehicles using first-registration years 2020–2023, a cohort chosen for statistical comparability. The report covers 158 vehicle lines and 27 brands; that scope does not provide a Mercedes-specific all-time score. ADAC’s 2026 breakdown statistics therefore cannot decide which classic Mercedes lasted best across its service life.

The W124, the 1985–1996 124-series E-Class, is too old to appear in current ADAC breakdown statistics or the TÜV report, according to ADAC’s W124 used-car guide. Its absence is a limitation of the current datasets, not evidence for or against the car’s reliability.
For a different measure, iSeeCars’ 2026 Mercedes reliability page ranks the G-Class highest among Mercedes models in its category-based longevity framework. iSeeCars says its analysis covers more than 12 million cars and describes its method as proprietary research into the longest-lasting models by segment. That makes the G-Class the leader in iSeeCars’ framework—not a proven winner in historical breakdown rates or a universal reliability ranking.

How to judge a Mercedes reliability claim
Before treating a ranking as an answer, check what it measures and which cars it covers. A breakdown count for a defined age group is not interchangeable with inspection defects, owner-reported problems, repair costs or longevity. Look for the engine and drivetrain, model years, geography, sample and whether the result accounts for how many vehicles are on the road.
- Breakdown statistics: Count roadside failures in a specified population and period; they do not by themselves show lifetime durability.
- Longevity rankings: Estimate or compare how long vehicles last under the publisher’s method; they may not measure repair frequency or cost.
- High-mileage examples: Show that a particular car survived, not how often the model fails. Survivor stories can overrepresent unusually well-kept vehicles.
- Recall and import records: NHTSA’s archived import-eligibility list records eligible model years and chassis entries with eligibility numbers and docket references. It concerns import eligibility and related petitions, not comparative reliability.
Verdict: the strongest answer depends on the question
If you mean a classic Mercedes with a notable historical breakdown result, the W124 diesel is a strong evidence-backed answer, with the important qualification that the ADAC figures are reported secondhand and apply to four-to-six-year-old cars. The W123 remains a credible durability rival, but the available material does not establish a direct statistical winner between the two. If you mean the highest-ranked Mercedes in a current longevity framework, iSeeCars puts the G-Class first on its 2026 page. None of those findings proves which Mercedes-Benz is the most reliable ever across every era and definition.
