Lexus is the strongest-supported starting point for shoppers comparing used luxury SUVs from roughly the past decade. J.D. Power repeatedly placed the brand near the top of its U.S. dependability findings, and its model-level awards include the Lexus GX, NX and RX. CARFAX also identifies the Acura RDX as a reliable luxury-SUV candidate. These findings make a useful shortlist, not a definitive ranking of every model and model year.
Which luxury SUVs have the strongest reliability evidence?
The available findings support three model-specific leads. They do not establish that every year, trim or powertrain of these vehicles is equally reliable.

J.D. Power’s 2026 study adds brand-level context: Lexus had the top overall model and eight model-level awards. That result is not evidence that every Lexus SUV won an award, or that all Lexus model years perform alike.
Why “most reliable” depends on the measure
Reliability rankings can describe different things. J.D. Power’s Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) measures owner-reported problems per 100 vehicles after three years. CARFAX’s used-SUV ranking describes the likelihood of unexpected repairs over five years. The measures have different time horizons and methods, so their results should not be combined into a single score.

- J.D. Power VDS: A U.S. survey of original owners of specified model-year vehicles, conducted after three years of ownership. Its results describe that cohort, not all vehicles bearing the same nameplate.
- CARFAX ranking: Focuses on used SUVs from model years 2019–2023 and a five-year unexpected-repair likelihood. CARFAX says its repair data go back to 2010, but the cited RDX finding is not a year-by-year comparison across the decade.
- Consumer Reports: Its predicted reliability ratings draw on annual member surveys about problems owners have experienced. It requires data for at least two models and recent model years to rank a brand. This is a separate survey approach, not a directly interchangeable score.
What the decade-long record does—and does not—show
Lexus has the most consistent brand-level signal in these findings, but rankings change with the study year and vehicle cohort. J.D. Power named Lexus the highest luxury brand in its 2021 U.S. VDS, whose respondents owned 2018 model-year vehicles. In the 2022 study of 2019 model-year vehicles, Genesis ranked highest in the premium segment, followed by Lexus and Porsche. A brand’s result in one year therefore should not be treated as a permanent position.
The more recent J.D. Power studies reinforce the need to distinguish brand results from model-level evidence:

- The 2024 U.S. VDS surveyed 30,595 original owners of 2021 model-year vehicles after three years and included the Lexus NX and RX among Toyota Motor Corporation’s model-level award recipients.
- The 2025 U.S. VDS surveyed 34,175 original owners of 2022 model-year vehicles after three years. It reported an industry average of 202 problems per 100 vehicles and included the Lexus GX among Toyota Motor Corporation’s model-level award recipients.
- The 2026 U.S. VDS surveyed 33,268 original owners of 2023 model-year vehicles after three years. J.D. Power reported Lexus as the top overall model and said the brand received eight model-level awards.
The industry averages are specific to their respective studies and cohorts; they are not model scores for the Lexus SUVs above. The 2025 study’s 202 problems per 100 vehicles, for example, is an industry-wide average, not the GX’s result.
How to use this evidence when buying a used luxury SUV
Use the rankings to decide which models deserve a closer look, then evaluate the particular vehicle. A model-level award or favorable ranking cannot tell you whether an individual used SUV was maintained well or has damage, wear or a repair history that changes its prospects.

- Start with the exact model year and generation. Do not extend a finding for one cohort across a nameplate’s entire history. Pay particular attention to redesigns and changes in powertrain; the cited findings do not provide a complete year-by-year record for every configuration.
- Match evidence to the question. Compare three-year dependability findings with other three-year findings, and five-year repair-likelihood findings with measures using the same horizon. Do not average or merge different methods into a home-made reliability score.
- Check the vehicle’s maintenance history and condition. CARFAX identifies established maintenance history as relevant in its used-vehicle ranking context. Review available service records and have the specific SUV inspected before purchase.
- Keep the study’s geography and ownership cohort in view. The cited J.D. Power VDS findings are U.S. studies of original owners. They are not global ratings or direct evaluations of every used vehicle currently for sale.
How to read the shortlist
If reliability evidence is the deciding factor, the Lexus GX, NX and RX have the clearest model-specific support in the cited J.D. Power results, while the Acura RDX has a favorable CARFAX observation covering its post-2018 second-generation period. The evidence does not support a precise ranking among these candidates, nor a claim that one is the most reliable luxury SUV for every model year. For a specific purchase, prioritize evidence for the exact year and configuration, then let the individual vehicle’s records and condition guide the decision.
