Japan’s prime minister is Sanae Takaichi, and the car at the center of this story is a 1991 Toyota Supra 2.5GT Twin-Turbo Limited. Automotive reporting says Takaichi used the Supra for 22 years before it was restored in 2022. The title’s “next prime minister” phrasing is now historical: the House of Representatives records her designation on 21 October 2025.
Who is the prime minister in the Supra story?
The story is about Sanae Takaichi. The Prime Minister’s Office of Japan lists her as prime minister, while the House of Representatives record dates her designation to 21 October 2025. The “next prime minister” wording dates from before that designation.
Which Supra did Takaichi own?
Automotive reporting identifies it as a 1991 Toyota Supra 2.5GT Twin-Turbo Limited, from the A70 generation and commonly identified as a JZA70. The model paired a 2.5-liter 1JZ-GTE DOHC engine with twin turbochargers. Toyota Japan’s historical catalog lists output at 280 PS for the 1991 2.5-liter model; that is the manufacturer’s specification, not a measurement of Takaichi’s individual car.
The trim name matters: this was not simply an unspecified “Turbo Supra.” The 2.5GT Twin-Turbo Limited was part of Toyota’s 1991 Supra range, with the 1JZ-GTE powertrain distinguishing it from other versions in that range.

What does the 22-year claim mean?
A 2022 report describes the Supra as Takaichi’s first new car and says she used it for 22 years. That supports a reported period of ownership or use; it does not establish that she drove it every day, how far she drove it, or exact purchase and sale dates.
The report also describes a restoration-completion ceremony at Nara Toyota on 29 October 2022. That confirms restoration activity at that time, but the available reporting does not establish where the car is now or whether it remains on public display.

- The engine specification: Toyota’s historical catalog lists the 2.5-liter twin-turbo 1JZ-GTE at 280 PS for the model range.
- The reported connection: Takaichi used the car for 22 years, and a restoration-completion event was reported in October 2022.
- The current context: Takaichi was designated prime minister on 21 October 2025, so descriptions of her as Japan’s “next” prime minister are out of date.
