The Lexus IS is the strongest reliability pick among Lexus sedans in 2026. In J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study, the IS ranked as the top overall model. That result reflects owner reports on 2023 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership—not a proven long-term record for a new 2026 IS.
Why the Lexus IS leads the 2026 reliability shortlist
J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study named the Lexus IS its top overall model. The study evaluates reported problems across 184 areas in nine categories, using responses from 33,268 original owners of 2023 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership. Fieldwork ran from December 2024 through November 2025. J.D. Power’s 2026 study announcement
The finding is the clearest recent model-specific dependability signal for a Lexus sedan, but it is evidence about a past model-year cohort. It cannot guarantee that every 2026 IS will have the same ownership experience.
How the IS and ES compare
| Factor | Lexus IS | Lexus ES |
|---|---|---|
| Recent model-specific evidence | Top overall model in J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study, based on 2023 vehicles after three years of ownership. J.D. Power | J.D. Power’s 2024 study gave the ES a model-level award based on 2021 vehicles after three years; the 2026 study’s top overall model result favors the IS. J.D. Power |
| 2026 reliability context | The 2026 study measures earlier vehicles, not 2026 examples. | J.D. Power’s 2026 ES page reports an 89/100 quality-and-reliability score; its ratings methodology may carry forward prior-year ratings when new consumer survey data is unavailable. J.D. Power |
| Redesign and powertrain choices | Not stated in the cited dependability-study results. | The 2026 ES is redesigned and offered as a hybrid and all-electric variants. Lexus |
| Forward-looking reliability estimate | Not stated in the cited sources. | Consumer Reports expects the 2026 ES to be above average compared with other new cars; this is an estimate, not a multi-year owner record. Its historical reliability charts use subscriber data through 2025 model years. Consumer Reports |
Is the 2026 Lexus ES too new to trust?
It is too new to have the same kind of three-year ownership record that supports the IS’s 2026 study result. That does not mean the ES is an unreliable choice: J.D. Power recognized the ES in its 2024 study, and Consumer Reports’ available 2026 estimate is above average. But the redesigned ES’s expanded lineup, including hybrid and all-electric versions, means older ES results cannot establish how every new configuration will fare over time.

Read a model-page score with care. J.D. Power notes that its ratings can carry forward from a prior year when new consumer survey data is not yet available, so a 2026 score should not automatically be treated as a rating drawn from a complete sample of 2026 owners.

Lexus ranked as the highest-rated premium brand in J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. study, with 151 problems per 100 vehicles, compared with an industry average of 204. A lower problems-per-100-vehicles (PP100) score means fewer reported problems. These are brand-wide results, not scores for the IS or ES alone. J.D. Power

Technology deserves attention during a test drive, particularly in a newly redesigned vehicle. In J.D. Power’s 2024 study, infotainment was the most problematic category, at 49.1 problems per 100 vehicles. That study also found more reported problems for battery-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids than for gas-powered vehicles and conventional hybrids. Those are broad industry findings, not a predicted defect rate for a particular Lexus sedan. J.D. Power

How to use the reliability evidence when buying
- Choose based on the kind of evidence you value. The IS has the stronger current model-specific signal; the ES has historical recognition and a forward-looking estimate, but not a comparable three-year record for its 2026 redesign.
- Compare the exact powertrain. The redesigned ES offers hybrid and all-electric variants. Do not assume that one powertrain’s ownership experience automatically applies to another.
- Test the features you will use. Check the infotainment system, driver-assistance features, connectivity and controls during a test drive, rather than relying only on a broad dependability score.
- Check the individual car. Review its maintenance records, open recalls, warranty coverage and service history. A population-level study is not an inspection, and no VIN-specific recall or history check is included in these findings.
