A Cybertruck can still get stuck in snow: four-wheel-drive capability and off-road settings cannot overcome unsuitable tires, snow deep enough to obstruct the chassis, or poor traction and driver inputs. Tesla recommends winter tires when snow or ice may be present and provides a Gravel/Deep Snow setting on equipped vehicles. But the available official guidance does not establish how often Cybertrucks get stuck or whether they do so more often than other pickups.
Are Cybertrucks unusually prone to getting stuck in snow?
That is not established by the available evidence. Tesla’s owner guidance explains winter equipment, vehicle settings, and recovery steps, but it does not publish a snow-stuck incident rate or a controlled comparison with other trucks. Viral clips and individual accounts cannot show how common an outcome is or whether one model is more susceptible under comparable conditions.
Whether a particular truck makes it through snow depends on the tire category and condition, snow depth, surface, ground clearance, and driver inputs. A vehicle’s capability does not remove those limits.
What helps a Cybertruck maintain traction in winter?
Use winter tires when snow or ice may be present
Tesla says summer and all-season tires are not designed to perform well in winter conditions and recommends winter tires in cold temperatures or where snow or ice may be present. It recommends a complete set of four winter tires with the same diameter, brand, construction, and tread pattern. Winter tires can mean more road noise and shorter tread life. See Tesla’s tire guidance.

Choose the appropriate surface setting, if your vehicle has it
In Overland mode, the Gravel/Deep Snow surface option allows medium amounts of tire slip for traction on gravel or deep snow and sets Preferred Ride Height to High. Tesla cautions that off-road capabilities may not be present on every Cybertruck; availability depends on market region, configuration, and manufacture date. Check the manual and settings for your vehicle rather than assuming the feature is available. Tesla’s Off-Road Modes guidance describes the setting.
Check regenerative deceleration on loose surfaces
Tesla’s manual warns that High regenerative deceleration can cause some loss of traction on loose surfaces such as snow. It describes Standard deceleration as maintaining traction on loose, low-traction surfaces. This is a setting to check against your vehicle’s manual and conditions, not a universal prescription for every winter drive. Tesla’s mode guidance covers the caveat.

Which snow chains fit, and how should they be used?
Tesla identifies König XD-16 Pro size 285 chains for 18- and 20-inch tire sizes, and says chains should be installed on the rear tires only. Verify your truck’s actual wheel and tire configuration before purchasing; a nominal wheel size alone does not confirm fit.
- Remove wheel covers before installing chains.
- If equipped with air suspension, set it to Medium and disable Preferred Ride Height Low.
- Avoid heavy loading, drive slowly, and do not exceed 30 mph (48 km/h).
- Remove chains when conditions allow and check local regulations.
- Do not use non-recommended chains or chains on other tire sizes: Tesla warns they can damage the suspension, body, wheels, or brake lines.
These are Tesla’s chain instructions; consult the current manual for your specific vehicle and tire setup. Tesla’s tire and chain guidance lists the fitment and cautions.

What should you do if the Cybertruck is stuck?
Tesla’s off-road troubleshooting guidance offers a progression: set the vehicle up for the terrain, address obstruction and traction, then use recovery aids if needed. Do not treat momentum as a blanket instruction for public roads; the off-road guide’s advice about momentum applies to avoiding sinking in sand or snow where stopping is possible to avoid.
- Engage Overland mode. Raise the suspension, if equipped, until the vehicle is no longer obstructed.
- Select the surface setting. Choose the terrain that matches conditions, such as Gravel/Deep Snow when available.
- Use available traction features. Engage front or rear locking differentials if equipped; Tesla also identifies Trail Assist for softer terrain or steep inclines.
- Use controlled recovery aids if traction is still insufficient. Tesla lists lowering tire pressure to 36 PSI, traction aids such as boards, and towing. The 36 PSI figure is part of its off-road troubleshooting advice, not a normal road-pressure target.
- Restore road settings before driving normally. Reinstate the specified tire pressure before regular road driving. Tesla notes that TPMS off-road thresholds may be lowered.
Tesla’s Off-Road Guide, version 2024.14.3, says momentum can help prevent sinking in sand and snow and that traction boards can improve traction at individual wheels. If using that advice, keep inputs smooth and controlled and follow safe, terrain-appropriate practices. Tesla’s recovery guidance provides the settings and recovery options.

- Diamond Pattern Cross Chain Provides A Smoother Ride And Superior Traction
- Meets Class "S" clearance requirements, even in light truck sizes
What else should you check in cold weather?
Cold temperatures reduce tire pressure, so check and inflate tires as needed. Tesla’s cold-weather guidance also recommends slowing down and avoiding frequent rapid acceleration; it says winter tires increase traction in snow or ice and chains provide additional traction. Check local rules before using chains. Tesla’s cold-weather guidance covers these precautions.
