Among the Honda Pilot years covered by the available reliability summaries, 2022 is the strongest evidence-backed candidate. Consumer Reports describes it as much more reliable than other vehicles from the same model year. That is a relative, survey-based assessment—not a guarantee about any individual used Pilot or a definitive ranking of every model year.
Which Honda Pilot years look most reliable?
The available Consumer Reports summaries offer a limited comparison, not a complete ranking. They characterize 2022 as a relative standout, 2017 and 2020 as less reliable than same-year peers, 2024 as about average, and 2025 as less reliable.
| Model year | Relative assessment in the available Consumer Reports summary | What that does—and does not—tell you |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 | Much more reliable than other cars from the same model year (Consumer Reports) | The clearest candidate in this comparison, but not a guarantee about an individual vehicle. |
| 2017 | Less reliable than other cars from the same model year (Consumer Reports) | A weaker relative assessment; it does not establish that every 2017 Pilot is problematic. |
| 2020 | Less reliable than other cars from the same model year (Consumer Reports) | A weaker relative assessment; the retrieved summary does not identify specific trouble spots. |
| 2024 | About average (Consumer Reports) | Neither a standout nor a poor year in the reported comparison. |
| 2025 | Less reliable than other cars from the same model year (Consumer Reports) | A weaker relative assessment, not proof of a specific defect or a prediction for every vehicle. |
Consumer Reports says its reliability history draws on subscriber surveys covering about 380,000 vehicles and 20 potential trouble spots across 2000–2025 vehicles. The retrieved summary does not provide a Pilot-specific sample size, detailed year scores, or individual trouble-spot results (Consumer Reports survey methodology). Treat the model-year assessments as a useful screening signal, not a precise failure-rate comparison.
What the model-year evidence cannot establish
The available summaries do not support a definitive ranking of every Honda Pilot year. They also do not show enough detail to identify particular mechanical problems behind each assessment. A secondary ModelYears summary describes a method that considers NHTSA complaints during a model year’s first three years along with other criteria, but it does not provide a complete, auditable year-by-year table or a complaint denominator (ModelYears summary). Complaint counts are not failure rates: vehicle population, age, reporting behavior, and time in service can all affect them.

- Look up the vehicle identification number with NHTSA’s VIN recall lookup or Honda’s recall site.
- Ask a Honda dealer to confirm whether campaign 26V367000 applies and whether the remedy has been completed.
- If the vehicle is eligible and the repair is outstanding, confirm the required work and arrange the no-cost recall remedy before purchase or promptly afterward.
How to evaluate a used Pilot before buying
- Review maintenance records. Look for a consistent service history and investigate gaps rather than assuming the model-year reputation answers the question.
- Verify recalls by VIN. A year within the affected range is not enough to determine coverage or whether work remains outstanding.
- Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. Ask the inspector to assess the vehicle’s overall condition and, for a Pilot potentially affected by the corrosion recall, the rear-subframe mounting area.
- Judge the specific vehicle. Mileage, condition, history, and inspection findings matter alongside the broad year-level survey assessment.
