Consumer Reports’ October 2025 comparison places the Lexus TX Hybrid and BMW X7 at the top by overall score, but those scores are not reliability scores. J.D. Power’s 2025 dependability study offers useful owner-reported context, but it measures 2022 vehicles after three years—not the reliability of the 2025 models.
What “most reliable” means in these rankings
Reliability sources measure different things, so their numbers should not be combined into one ranking. Consumer Reports (CR) publishes a predicted-reliability measure alongside overall score, road-test score and predicted owner satisfaction. J.D. Power’s Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) counts owner-reported problems per 100 vehicles (PP100) after three years. A separate J.D. Power vehicle-page Quality & Reliability rating is another measure again.
- CR predicted reliability: an estimate of reliability, distinct from its overall score. The October 2025 table places the measure in a dedicated column, but searchable text does not establish clear numerical model-by-model predicted-reliability scores.
- VDS PP100: a count of reported problems, with fewer problems indicating better dependability. It is based on older vehicles in this study, not a direct durability result for 2025 models.
- Vehicle-page rating: a separate J.D. Power rating that should not be treated as equivalent to either CR’s predicted reliability or VDS PP100.
What Consumer Reports’ 2025 comparison says
CR’s table, marked as of October 2025, lists the Lexus TX Hybrid and BMW X7 as its two highest-scoring entries in the luxury three-row SUV category. The numbers below are overall and road-test scores, not reliability scores.
| 2025 model | CR overall score | CR road-test score | Practical notes in CR’s table |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lexus TX Hybrid | 92 | 85 | Acceleration, roomy cabin, comfortable ride and high-quality interior materials are noted strengths; some controls are unintuitive. |
| BMW X7 | 90 | 83 | Powertrain, quietness, agility, fit and finish, and front- and second-row comfort are noted strengths; the third row is tight. |
CR marks both models Recommended. That designation and their high overall scores may help narrow a shopping list, but neither establishes that one has the best predicted reliability. The comparison also includes the Audi Q7, Lexus TX, Infiniti QX60, Acura MDX, Cadillac XT6, Volvo XC90, Lexus GX, Mercedes-Benz GLS, Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Aviator and Land Rover Discovery.

What J.D. Power’s dependability study can—and cannot—tell you
J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. VDS surveyed 34,175 original owners of 2022 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership. Fieldwork ran from August through November 2024. The study reported an industry average of 202 PP100; Lexus ranked highest overall among brands at 140 PP100, its third consecutive year at the top. The Lexus GX and Cadillac XT6 were among model-level award recipients.
These results favor Lexus as brand-level dependability context and identify two relevant model award recipients, but they are not a complete, like-for-like reliability ranking of 2025 luxury three-row SUVs. The vehicles evaluated were 2022 models, and the study’s award segments do not cover every candidate in a directly comparable way. J.D. Power attributed continued problems in part to pandemic-era disruptions. Jason Norton, director of auto benchmarking at J.D. Power, said: “Supply chain issues, record-high vehicle prices, and personnel disruption in the wake of the pandemic were problematic.”

How to interpret the BMW X7’s J.D. Power rating
J.D. Power’s vehicle page displays an 81/100 Quality & Reliability rating for the 2025 BMW X7. The page says previous-year ratings are used until new consumer survey data is available in September. Treat this as a separately labeled rating, not a direct comparison with CR’s predicted-reliability measure or the VDS’s PP100 results.

Use reliability evidence first to identify what was measured and which model years it covers. Then compare the traits that affect whether an SUV works for your household; a strong overall score or brand-level dependability result cannot answer questions about third-row fit or day-to-day comfort.

- Controls: CR notes unintuitive controls in the TX Hybrid and lists controls as a drawback for the Mercedes-Benz GLS.
- Fuel economy and driving feel: the Lexus GX is credited with a powerful engine and high-quality cabin materials, while its noted drawbacks include fuel economy, ride, handling and wind noise. The X7’s listed strengths include agility and a strong powertrain.
- Trim and equipment: the MDX is noted for a smooth powertrain and fit and finish, but CR says some luxury features require choosing a top trim.
For a final comparison, keep each reliability measure beside its source, model year and sample rather than blending different publishers’ figures into a composite rank. Then assess seating, controls, comfort, fuel economy and trim costs in person.
