For the 2025 model year, the Kia Niro HEV is Kia’s most fuel-efficient conventional hybrid SUV in the available EPA-estimated figures: it is rated at 53 mpg combined with 16-inch wheels or 49 mpg combined with 18-inch wheels. The higher figure depends on the wheel configuration, and neither estimate guarantees what a driver will achieve.

Why the Niro HEV takes the lead
The Niro’s best listed figure is 53 mpg combined, but it applies to the version with 16-inch wheels. The 18-inch-wheel configuration is rated at 49 mpg combined. That makes wheel size an important part of any Niro-versus-Sportage comparison: quoting only 53 mpg would omit a meaningful configuration difference.
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center independently classifies the 2025 Kia Niro/Niro FE as an SUV in its HEV listing and reports a gasoline fuel-economy range of 49–53 mpg. The AFDC listing corroborates both the SUV classification and the range; the specific wheel-conditioned ratings above are from Kia. How the Sportage HEV compares
The Sportage HEV’s rating varies by trim and drivetrain. Kia lists the LX as front-wheel drive (FWD) standard, with all-wheel drive (AWD) optional; its 43 mpg combined figure is for LX FWD. AWD is standard on EX and SX-Prestige, which are rated at 38 mpg combined. Kia’s 2025 Sportage HEV features and options page details those drivetrain configurations.
On the published combined estimates, the Niro HEV’s 16-inch-wheel rating is 10 mpg higher than the Sportage LX FWD’s, and 15 mpg higher than the Sportage EX and SX-Prestige AWD rating. For the Niro on 18-inch wheels, the differences are 6 mpg and 11 mpg, respectively. These are comparisons of EPA-estimated combined ratings, not promises about fuel economy in everyday driving.

Do not compare a plug-in hybrid’s MPGe as if it were HEV mpg
The Niro HEV is a conventional hybrid. A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) has a different powertrain and may use both electricity and gasoline; its MPGe figure is not interchangeable with a conventional hybrid’s combined mpg. For example, Kia’s 2025 Sportage PHEV specifications list 84 MPGe and 35 mpg EPA fuel economy, as well as a 13.8-kWh battery. Those measures describe a different vehicle and operating context, so they should not be ranked directly against the Niro HEV’s combined mpg. See Kia’s 2025 Sportage PHEV specifications.
