RM Sotheby’s reported that it sold for $18,705,000 at its 2026 Monterey auction, and called it the most valuable Corvette ever sold at auction. That is the auction house’s published sale amount; its sources do not break out a separate hammer price.
Which Corvette holds the auction record?
The record-holder is chassis 003, a 1963 Corvette Grand Sport. RM Sotheby’s announced the result on August 17, 2026, and its Monterey lot page lists the car as sold for $18,705,000. RM Sotheby’s record announcement and the lot listing identify it as the auction record for a Corvette.
This was not a standard production Sting Ray or a new-car charity sale. Chassis 003 was a factory-built competition car, one of five Grand Sports constructed and the first of three coupes. RM Sotheby’s notes that it incorporated hundreds of components distinct from a production Sting Ray.
Why chassis 003 is historically significant
A documented competition career
The lot history traces the car through SCCA events and the Mecom Racing Team’s 1963 Bahamas Speed Week effort. It placed second in class at the 1964 12 Hours of Sebring and third in class at Sebring in 1965. Period drivers included A.J. Foyt, Jim Hall, Augie Pabst, John Cannon, Dick Thompson and Delmo Johnson. These are competition credentials of this particular Grand Sport, not specifications or achievements of ordinary production Corvettes.

Restoration and recognition
RM Sotheby’s says the car was restored during its current owner’s 23-year stewardship and returned to its 1964 Sebring livery. The lot page also records Bloomington Gold certifications and recognition from the National Corvette Restorers Society. Those details help describe the car’s provenance and presentation; the available sources do not isolate any one of them as the reason for its sale price.
How the record compares with Corvette charity auctions
Several high-profile Corvette results are often cited because they involved first retail examples or special one-off cars sold for charity. They are useful comparisons, but they are not the all-time auction record. The table uses the amounts published by the respective sources; the charity purpose is part of the sale context.

The figures show why the sale context matters: the Grand Sport was a historic competition car, while the other cited examples were manufacturer-associated charity sales of new or special production cars. They should not be treated as interchangeable measures of the same market category.
