It is a plug-in hybrid pickup: the launch version paired electric motors with a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine. Its range and capability figures vary by market, model year and test cycle, so the Mexican launch numbers should not be treated as universal specifications.
When did the BYD Shark launch?
The Shark made its global debut in Mexico on May 14, 2024. BYD described it as its first pickup and said the launch was the company’s first global product launch outside China. The truck was introduced on BYD’s DMO (Dual Mode Off-road) Super Hybrid platform. BYD’s launch announcement positioned it as a new-energy pickup aimed at both work and lifestyle use.
Availability came later in other markets. BYD announced launches in Peru on May 29, 2025, and Saudi Arabia introduced a locally named SHARK 6 on October 1, 2025. BYD announced a European debut at Goodwood in July 2026 and said a Swiss introduction was planned; that release did not establish availability across Europe, and said Swiss pricing, trims and launch timing would follow. Regional model names and specifications can differ.
Is the BYD Shark a plug-in hybrid?
Yes. The Shark uses BYD’s DMO plug-in hybrid system, combining electric drive with a petrol engine. The 2024 Mexican launch version was described as having electric motors and a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine. In BYD’s 2026 UK technical description, the engine can generate electricity, and it can also work with the motors in parallel when more power is demanded. That arrangement allows electric driving for some journeys while retaining a petrol engine for longer trips or when the hybrid system calls for it. BYD UK’s technical specification describes the later UK-market configuration.

BYD said the Mexican launch version produced more than 430 hp, accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds and used electronically managed all-wheel drive. It also claimed a 40% reduction in fuel consumption versus other fuel-powered pickups in its class, including at low battery levels. The release does not provide an independent test protocol for that comparison, so it should be read as BYD’s claim rather than a verified comparative result.
How far can the BYD Shark go?
There is no single range figure that applies to every Shark. The figures below are manufacturer or distributor claims for specific markets and release dates; NEDC and WLTP results use different test procedures and should not be compared as if they were measured identically.

These are not independent road-test results. The official sources reviewed do not establish real-world range under a comparable set of driving conditions. Actual results can also depend on equipment, weather, load, route and driving style.
How capable is the Shark as a work pickup?
For the UK-market specification listed by BYD in 2026, the practical figures are a 2,500 kg towing capacity, 790 kg maximum payload and a 1,200-litre load bed. BYD lists 436 PS and 650 Nm for that specification. These numbers describe the UK/European media configuration; they should not be assumed to apply to trucks sold in other countries.

When assessing a pickup for a particular job, check the local version’s towing limit, payload and load-bed dimensions against the real load and trailer requirements. Also consider electric range under load, charging access, fuel economy with a depleted battery, local price and availability. The sources cited here do not provide equivalent competitor figures, a cross-market specification comparison or local warranty terms.
Can the BYD Shark power tools or appliances?
BYD promotes Vehicle-to-Load capability, called VTOL in some launch material and V2L in later material, to supply power to external devices. That makes the feature potentially useful at a worksite or campsite, but the cited product material does not state output wattage or how long a particular tool or appliance can run. Check the vehicle’s local specification and the device’s power requirements before relying on it.

How does charging work?
BYD’s 2026 UK/European media specification lists a 32.2 kWh battery, 11 kW three-phase AC charging and 55 kW DC charging. BYD gives a DC charge time of 21 minutes from 30% to 80%, and says AC charging from 15% takes a little over three hours. These are manufacturer figures for that specification; they are not a guarantee of charging time in every installation or market.
The cited specification does not establish a connector type or compatibility across regions. Before choosing a home charger or public charging cable, confirm the vehicle’s local charging port, the charger connector and the available electrical supply.

What should buyers verify in their market?
Regional name, equipment, range, performance and commercial availability are not interchangeable. For example, the 2025 Saudi distributor FAQ gives a combined range of 520 km but contains an internally inconsistent power statement, so that power figure is not reliable enough to quote. Confirm specifications and ordering status with an authorized local BYD source before making a purchase decision. The European announcement from July 2026 specifically referred to a planned Swiss introduction; it did not confirm launch timing or pricing for every European country.
