For cars that actually sold at public auction in 2024, the highest result in a compiled full-year ranking was $17.875 million for a 1963 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider. That is a different measure from the estimated prices reported for bespoke cars such as the Rolls-Royce La Rose Noire Droptail, which was put at about $30 million but was not established here as a completed public sale.
This distinction matters: a reported estimate, asking price, private transaction and completed auction result are not interchangeable. The auction figures below are reported sale prices; the bespoke-car figures are estimates attributed to media reporting.
Highest reported public-auction sales of 2024
The following leading results come from a compiled full-year 2024 ranking published by Classic Car Auctions in 2025. Its prices include buyer’s premium and may include disclosed post-hammer or charity-lot deals, so they are not necessarily the hammer bids alone.

These are individual vehicle results, not a measure of the whole collector-car market. The ranking is a secondary compilation; selected entries have corroboration from auction-house or manufacturer reporting, but that does not independently verify every result in the list.

How auction records corroborate individual results
The Bugatti record reported by Gooding and Bugatti
Gooding & Company reported that a 1938 Bugatti Type 57C Aravis ‘Special Cabriolet’ sold for $6,605,000 in 2024, calling it a model record. Bugatti’s newsroom reported the same sale price and record characterization. This is a separately documented result, not a reason to combine the auction ranking with estimates for bespoke modern cars. See Gooding & Company and Bugatti Newsroom.
Reported prices for bespoke cars are estimates, not confirmed sales
A September 2024 ranking presented by The Indian Express and updated November 22, 2024 attributed its figures to industry sources and Forbes. It put the Rolls-Royce La Rose Noire Droptail at an estimated $30 million, with the Rolls-Royce Boat Tail next and the Bugatti La Voiture Noire third. Those figures are reported estimates, not public auction prices or first-party transaction disclosures established by the reporting.

A ranked list changes depending on what counts as a price. A public auction result is a completed sale reported by an auction venue; an estimate is an attributed valuation and may not correspond to a sale at all. Asking prices and private-sale amounts are different categories again.

- For individual record claims: prefer the auction house’s own results or a manufacturer’s announcement where available, while noting that corroboration of one car does not validate an entire ranking.
The sources cited here establish particular sale results and reported estimates, not a market-wide statistic for the most expensive cars overall.
