For U.S. model year 2025, the Lucid Air Pure RWD leads the EPA’s preliminary real-world fuel-economy estimates at 144.8 mpg-equivalent. Among gasoline vehicles without a hybrid system, the Honda Civic leads at 36.6 mpg. These are estimated real-world figures from the EPA’s February 2026 Automotive Trends Report—not a final ranking of every trim using its window-sticker rating.
Which 2025 vehicles are the most efficient?
The EPA’s February 2026 Automotive Trends Report identifies these leaders in its preliminary model-year 2025 estimates:
| Category | Vehicle | EPA estimated real-world fuel economy |
|---|---|---|
| Overall | Lucid Air Pure RWD | 144.8 mpg-equivalent (battery electric) |
| Gasoline, non-hybrid | Honda Civic | 36.6 mpg |
| Average new vehicle | Not applicable | 28.1 mpg |
All three numbers are U.S. EPA estimates for model year 2025, and the report marks that model-year data preliminary. The 144.8 figure is an energy-equivalent measure for an electric vehicle, not miles driven per gallon of liquid gasoline. The 28.1 mpg figure is the estimated real-world average for new vehicles, not a target or rating for a particular model.
Why the report leader may differ from a vehicle’s window sticker
The EPA report’s estimated real-world fuel economy and the consumer fuel-economy label’s ratings are different measures. The report says its estimates differ from label values available when a vehicle is sold. Don’t treat the figures above as a universal sticker-rating ranking or mix report estimates and label ratings in the same comparison.

For a buyer-facing rating, look up the exact vehicle configuration in the EPA’s fuel-economy lookup. EPA’s trends-data portal provides model-year trend information and identifies 2025 values as preliminary. The EPA’s fuel-economy testing-data page explains that estimates draw on testing at its National Vehicle and Fuel Emissions Laboratory and manufacturer-submitted test data; its 2025 testing-data file is listed as January 2026.
How to compare fuel economy fairly
Use combined MPG for a quick comparison
For vehicles rated in miles per gallon, the EPA combined MPG figure weights city driving at 55% and highway driving at 45%. The EPA describes combined MPG as the most prominent number for quick comparison across vehicles. It is a standardized comparison, not a promise that your own driving will match the rating.

Read MPGe as an energy comparison, not gasoline consumption
Electric vehicles and other vehicles that do not use liquid fuel are rated in MPGe. The EPA defines this as the distance traveled using an amount of energy equivalent to one gallon of gasoline. It allows comparisons across fuel types; it does not mean an EV burns gasoline. See the EPA’s text version of the electric-vehicle label for its explanation of the rating.
Match the exact configuration
Compare the same model, trim, drivetrain, and wheel configuration. EPA ratings are organized by vehicle and configuration, and differences in those details can change the rating. A model name alone may not identify the most efficient version.

Definitely it’s an essential OBD2 digital gauge for every car owner.
Account for how a plug-in hybrid is used
A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) can be charged from an external source and may operate electrically until its battery charge is depleted or the driving demand cannot be met electrically. Its electric operation and gasoline operation after the battery charge runs down are distinct. How often you charge and the length and pattern of your trips affect how much of your driving is electric. To compare PHEVs, check the exact trim’s electric range as well as its gasoline efficiency in charge-sustaining operation; the EPA sources cited here do not provide a per-model PHEV comparison table.

What to check before choosing an efficient vehicle
- Powertrain: Decide whether you want a battery electric vehicle, plug-in hybrid, conventional hybrid, or gasoline vehicle.
- Size and class: Compare vehicles that suit the same practical needs; a small car and a larger vehicle are not interchangeable simply because one has a higher efficiency figure.
- Configuration: Verify the trim, drivetrain, and wheels in the EPA lookup rather than relying on a broad model name.
- Use pattern: Consider expected range, charging access, refueling needs, and—if considering a PHEV—how frequently you can charge.
- Costs: Efficiency alone does not establish what you will spend. Fuel and electricity prices, charging access, driving, and other ownership factors matter. EPA label cost estimates use assumptions, including annual mileage and projected fuel prices; personalize any estimate to your circumstances.
