Kelley Blue Book’s 2024 list ranks midsize SUVs by reported starting price, not reliability. Its five lowest-priced entries run from $22,100 for the Mitsubishi Outlander to $24,900 for the Jeep Grand Cherokee. J.D. Power’s 2024 dependability results, meanwhile, chiefly cover 2021 vehicles after three years of ownership, so they cannot establish a reliability ranking for the 2024 models in KBB’s list.
What this ranking does—and does not—measure
The comparison below follows Kelley Blue Book’s published order and starting-price figures for its 20 Cheapest Mid-Size SUVs of 2024. Those figures are source-reported starting prices, not current local dealer quotes, transaction prices, or total ownership costs. KBB also reports combined fuel economy; it is included as a separate comparison, not as a measure of dependability.
The list spans two- and three-row vehicles and includes differing body styles and segment classifications. In particular, KBB describes the Outlander as a compact SUV and the Outback as a wagon-like SUV. They remain in the table because KBB includes them in this midsize-SUV price list; that does not make their classifications interchangeable with the other entries. “Midsize crossover” is therefore best understood here as the title’s shorthand for KBB’s comparison set, not a strict uniform body-style definition.
No source in this comparison provides a common, model-specific long-term reliability score for all of these 2024 candidates. The prices below must not be read as a reliability rank.

What J.D. Power’s dependability evidence can tell you
J.D. Power defines its 2024 Vehicle Dependability Study around problems reported by owners of three-year-old vehicles, covering the types and number of problems experienced over the prior 12 months. The study surveyed 30,595 original owners of 2021 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership; fieldwork ran from August through November 2023. Its results are a separate evidence set from KBB’s 2024 price list.

In the 2024 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study, J.D. Power reported an industry average of 190 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100) and a Toyota mass-market brand score of 147 PP100, the highest-ranked mass-market brand in that study. PP100 expresses reported problems per 100 vehicles; a lower score means fewer reported problems. These are study-level figures, not scores for every model in KBB’s list.
J.D. Power’s 2024 Dependability Awards and Ratings identify the 2021 Toyota 4Runner as the Midsize SUV winner and the 2021 Chevrolet Traverse as the Upper Midsize SUV winner. The awards describe three-year-old vehicles, not the reliability of the 2024 model-year versions of the lower-priced KBB entries. J.D. Power’s methodology says, “The fewer the number of problems reported by car owners, the higher the score.”

Do not confuse consumer ratings with dependability scores
J.D. Power’s 2024 Honda Passport page displays a “Best Midsize SUV of 2024” consumer comparison with ratings of 86 for the Chevrolet Blazer and Nissan Murano, 82 for the Subaru Outback and Hyundai Santa Fe, 80 for the Honda Passport, and 79 for the Ford Edge. These are consumer-comparison ratings, not the three-year dependability results described above. The page also notes that current model-year ratings may use the prior year’s ratings until new consumer survey data becomes available in September. How to use the list when shopping
- Use the KBB order to compare reported entry prices. Before treating a listed figure as a budget, verify the exact model year, trim, destination charges, incentives, and local availability with a dealer.
- Compare fuel economy separately. KBB’s combined MPG figures can help distinguish the listed models on its stated measure, but they do not establish reliability or your actual fuel costs.
- Check model-year-specific evidence. A result for a 2021 vehicle after three years of ownership is not automatically transferable to a 2024 model, even when the nameplate is the same.
- Do not infer a single “best value” winner from these figures. The sources do not supply a shared method combining starting price, fuel economy, and model-specific long-term reliability.
