The 2026 Mazda CX-90 PHEV starts at $50,695, below the 2026 Lexus RX Hybrid’s $55,075 starting price. But they are not like-for-like SUVs: the Mazda is a plug-in hybrid with three rows and seating for seven, while the RX 350h is a conventional hybrid with five seats. The Mazda’s price advantage is clearest in its entry trim; higher CX-90 PHEV trims narrow the gap or exceed the Lexus starting price.
How much less does the CX-90 PHEV cost?
Mazda North American Operations lists the 2026 CX-90 PHEV Preferred at $50,695, Premium Sport at $55,500 and Premium Plus at $58,700. Lexus lists the 2026 RX Hybrid from $55,075. These are U.S. manufacturer-listed starting prices, not quotes for similarly equipped vehicles, and Mazda’s MSRP excludes destination, taxes, title and other fees. Mazda lists destination at $1,645 ($1,690 in Alaska), and says dealer prices vary.

The CX-90 PHEV Preferred starts $4,380 below the RX Hybrid’s listed starting price. The Mazda Premium Sport is $425 above the Lexus entry price, and Premium Plus is $3,625 above it. The price comparison therefore depends on which Mazda trim you are considering and what equipment you want; compare dealer quotes for vehicles configured to your needs rather than treating the lowest starting prices as equivalent.

Two different answers to the family-SUV question
The largest practical distinction is seating. Mazda says the CX-90 PHEV seats seven, with a three-seat third row; an available second-row captain’s-chair layout changes the seating configuration. Lexus lists five seats for the RX 350h. If you regularly carry more than five people, the CX-90’s extra row may matter more than the initial price gap. If you need only two rows, the RX’s smaller passenger capacity may be sufficient.
Cargo space in the Mazda varies with seating arrangement. Mazda lists up to 15.9 cubic feet behind one third-row arrangement and up to 75.2 cubic feet with seats folded. Those maximums describe different configurations, so they are not simultaneous passenger-and-cargo figures. Check the specific layout if you need room for both passengers and luggage.

CX-90 PHEV: can run on electricity for short trips
The CX-90 PHEV pairs a 2.5-liter gasoline engine with an electric motor and a 17.8 kWh battery. Mazda lists 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque with recommended premium fuel, along with 56 MPGe and about 26 miles of electric range in its pricing release. Mazda’s current model information gives an electric-range estimate of up to 27 miles, so the precise advertised figure depends on which Mazda page or estimate is used. These are manufacturer-published figures, not an independent comparison or a promise of real-world range.

Because it is a plug-in hybrid, the CX-90 PHEV can use electricity for some driving when charged, then rely on its gasoline powertrain as needed. How much gasoline it uses in practice depends on charging frequency, route, driving conditions and other factors; the published MPGe figure should not be read as an apples-to-apples equivalent of a conventional hybrid’s mpg.

RX 350h: conventional hybrid, no charging routine described
Lexus lists the 2026 RX 350h at 246 net combined horsepower and EPA-estimated 37 mpg city, 34 mpg highway and 36 mpg combined, with AWD. The cited Lexus specification describes a hybrid, not a plug-in model with an advertised charge-at-home electric range. Its combined MPG and Mazda’s MPGe measure different operating contexts, so neither number alone establishes which SUV will cost less to run for a particular household.

What kind of charger does the Mazda CX-90 PHEV use?
Mazda says the CX-90 PHEV uses a J1772 charging port for Level 1 and Level 2 charging. It includes a portable Level 1 charging cable for a standard 120-volt outlet, so a separate home charger is not required to begin charging.

How can I charge my Mazda CX-90 PHEV at home?
Plug the included cable into a suitable standard 120-volt outlet for Level 1 charging. Mazda estimates approximately 11 hours for a full charge this way. A compatible Level 2 home charger can reduce Mazda’s estimated charging time to about 2.5 hours. Actual time can vary; for Level 2, check charger compatibility and electrical installation requirements before purchase or installation.
What is the range of the Mazda CX-90 PHEV?
Mazda’s 2026 pricing release states about 26 miles of all-electric range, while its current model page says up to 27 miles. Mazda says the CX-90 PHEV can tow up to 3,500 pounds when properly equipped with a tow hitch. That may be useful if you need to tow a small trailer, but the figure is conditional on proper equipment; verify the vehicle’s configuration and towing requirements before relying on it.

Mazda reports that the 2026 CX-90 and CX-90 Plug-in Hybrid earned a 2026 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award. That is Mazda’s report of the award; buyers evaluating a particular trim or safety configuration should consult IIHS for the applicable vehicle details.
Which SUV makes more sense for you?
- Consider the CX-90 PHEV Preferred if you want a lower listed entry price than the RX Hybrid, need a third row, and can charge at home often enough to make its plug-in capability useful.
- Compare higher CX-90 PHEV trims against the RX you would actually buy if equipment matters more than the base price. The Mazda Premium Sport and Premium Plus start above the Lexus RX Hybrid’s listed entry price.
- Consider the RX 350h if five seats meet your needs and you prefer the published conventional-hybrid fuel-economy format rather than a plug-in charging routine.
- Get configuration-specific quotes before deciding. Manufacturer starting prices do not account for destination and other fees in the Mazda figures, dealer pricing, or differences in equipment between the vehicles.
The Mazda offers more passenger capacity and plug-in capability at a lower entry MSRP, but that does not make it a Lexus-equivalent substitute. Neither the listed prices nor the manufacturer specifications establish a cabin-quality, reliability, resale-value or fuel-savings advantage.
