The UK 2025 Mazda3 hatchback makes a strong case for itself with sharp styling, a high-quality cabin and engaging handling. Its mild-hybrid system is modest assistance rather than electric driving, and the car’s limited cabin space and firmer ride may matter more to some buyers than its strengths. The right engine depends on whether you value the lower-output 2.5-litre G or the quicker 2.0-litre X.
What does the Mazda3 mild-hybrid system do?
Mazda’s M Hybrid system recovers energy during braking, stores it in a 24-volt lithium-ion battery, then uses that energy to assist the petrol engine and power the car’s electrical systems. It is a mild hybrid, not a plug-in hybrid; the UK technical guide describes engine assistance and energy recovery, not electric-only driving. Mazda presents the system as a way to improve efficiency, but the published figures do not isolate how much fuel saving comes from the hybrid assistance itself.
In the UK 2025 range, the 2.5-litre e-Skyactiv G also has cylinder deactivation. Mazda says it can switch between two- and four-cylinder operation during steady cruising, rather than under heavy load. That engine replaces the former UK 2.0-litre 122ps entry G; the 2.0-litre e-Skyactiv X remains a separate, higher-output option. Which UK 2025 Mazda3 engine should you choose?
The 2.5 G is the entry petrol engine, while the 2.0 X has more power and quicker official acceleration. The following are Mazda UK figures for the 2025 hatchback; economy and, in some cases, the listed range vary with transmission, wheels and equipment specification.

The X uses Mazda’s SPCCI technology and is the quicker choice on the official 0–62mph figures. The G is lower-output but includes cylinder deactivation; it is not simply the old 2.0-litre 122ps engine with a new name. Mazda’s technical information says the new 2.5 G adds 18ps over that outgoing engine and raises peak torque from 213Nm at 4,000rpm to 238Nm at 3,300rpm. WLTP figures are laboratory comparison values, not a forecast of what every driver will achieve. Mazda says actual consumption varies with factors including weather, driving style, load and accessories. The manual and automatic figures are different configurations; they do not establish that one engine will always be more economical in real-world driving. Check current prices and trim availability separately, then weigh transmission preference, acceleration and the kind of space and ride comfort you need.

What makes the Mazda3 a great hatchback?
Autocar’s review of the updated Mazda3 praises its styling, interior quality and incisive handling, and gives the car 8/10. The appeal is not just how it looks: the reviewer also describes its engines as frugal for relatively large petrol engines. The engine choice gives buyers a meaningful distinction. The G’s 238Nm arrives at a lower engine speed than the X’s 240Nm, while the X has substantially more power and lower official acceleration times. That makes the X the clearer pick if performance is the priority; the G offers a less powerful alternative with cylinder deactivation. The official economy numbers do not support a simple promise that either engine will use less fuel for every owner.

Where does the Mazda3 fall short?
Ride comfort takes second place to handling
Autocar says the chassis prioritises handling over secondary ride refinement. If broken or uneven roads are common on your routes, or ride softness matters more than agile responses, take a test drive over the surfaces you use most rather than relying on the handling praise alone.
The cabin is not especially roomy
The same review says cabin space is limited compared with rivals. Mazda lists hatchback boot capacity at 334 litres with the rear seats up and 1,026 litres folded for versions without Bose; Bose-equipped versions are listed at 330 and 1,022 litres respectively. Those boot measurements do not settle whether the rear seats suit your passengers: if a child seat or regular adult rear-seat use is important, check the fit in person.

The X may not feel as its technology suggests
Autocar’s criticism of the e-Skyactiv X is that it lacks both the torque-rich feel associated with a turbocharged engine and a particularly free-revving character. Its 186ps and quicker official acceleration make it the higher-performance engine on paper, but that does not guarantee it will feel more satisfying to every driver. Test both engines if you are choosing primarily on how they deliver power.

It is a persuasive choice if you want a well-finished, stylish hatchback whose handling is a priority, and you are comfortable with modest mild-hybrid assistance rather than electric driving. The main reasons to look elsewhere—or at least test carefully—are a need for generous passenger space, a more compliant ride, or a particular expectation of how the e-Skyactiv X should deliver its power. For the UK 2025 range, choose between the 2.5 G and 2.0 X on performance, transmission and your own comfort and space checks, not on an assumed mild-hybrid fuel-saving percentage.
