The Mercedes-Benz C36 AMG was the W202 C-Class’s six-cylinder performance flagship and the first high-volume production model in Mercedes-AMG history. Unveiled in September 1993, it was also Mercedes-Benz and AMG’s first joint project—not the first Mercedes ever modified by AMG. Mercedes-Benz Media reports that 5,221 were produced through June 1997.
Why the C36 AMG mattered
Before the C36, AMG had already worked on Mercedes-Benz road cars. What changed with this model was the nature and scale of the relationship: Mercedes-Benz identifies the C36 as its first joint project with AMG and as the first high-volume production model in Mercedes-AMG history. That distinction makes the car a milestone in the companies’ partnership, rather than AMG’s first performance-tuned Mercedes.
The C36 gave the W202 C-Class a factory-backed performance flagship. It premiered at the Frankfurt International Motor Show in September 1993, during the show’s 9–19 September run, according to Mercedes-Benz’s retrospectives. Mercedes-Benz Media’s 2018 account and its C-Class chronology document the debut and the joint-project milestone.
What Mercedes-Benz says about its output and production
Mercedes-Benz Media lists the C36’s output as 206 kW (280 PS). PS is metric horsepower; this figure should not be casually relabeled as U.S. SAE horsepower. The sources cited here do not establish a U.S.-spec horsepower figure.

Mercedes-Benz Media reports a total production run of 5,221 vehicles through June 1997. By March 1997, the 5,000th C36 had been delivered. These are manufacturer-reported historical figures, not independent production-count estimates. Mercedes-Benz Media, 2018.
How it led to the C43 AMG
The C36’s successor, the C43 AMG, arrived in autumn 1997 and became the first C-Class with a V8 engine. The shift from the six-cylinder C36 to a V8 successor is the key supported mechanical distinction between the two cars; the available historical sources do not establish a fair comparison of their acceleration, handling, reliability, or current values.

Mercedes-Benz also says AMG supplied the official Formula 1 Safety Car for the first time in June 1996, using the C36 AMG. Owners looking for repair information should distinguish general W202 coverage from confirmed C36 AMG procedures. Bentley Publishers lists a paper Mercedes-Benz C-Class (W202) Service Manual covering 1994–2000, but its catalog entry does not confirm C36-specific engine coverage. Mercedes-Benz USA’s official parts store includes C 36 AMG in its C-Class model selector and lists common maintenance categories such as oil filters, spark plugs, fuses, belts, hoses, wiper blades, and headlights. That provides a genuine lookup route, but it does not establish stock or fitment for a particular component, market, or model-year configuration. Confirm fitment against the vehicle’s VIN.
