That year, Chevrolet Performance discontinued the LS7 and LS427/570 crate engines, according to GM Authority’s February 1, 2022 report. Now Chevrolet has a different big-displacement Corvette V8: the 2027 LS6, a naturally aspirated 6.7-liter engine rated by GM at 535 hp and 520 lb-ft. It is not an LS7 replacement in the same vehicle application, but it carries forward the appeal of a large-cube, naturally aspirated Corvette engine.
What actually ended in 2022?
The LS7’s 2022 discontinuation was about Chevrolet Performance crate-engine sales, not the end of a Corvette production run. GM Authority reported that Chevrolet Performance discontinued both the LS7 and the LS427/570 crate engines. The LS7 had already powered the C6 Corvette Z06 and the fifth-generation Camaro Z/28; it was not a 2022 Corvette engine.

Chevrolet Performance’s 2011 catalog describes the LS7 as a 7.0-liter, 427-cubic-inch small-block rated at 505 hp at 6,300 rpm and 470 lb-ft at 4,800 rpm. The 2024 Chevrolet Performance catalog also identifies the engine with the C6 Z06 and Camaro Z/28 and gives the same power rating. These are manufacturer-published figures, not a comparison from a common independent test.
Meet the 2027 Corvette LS6
The new LS6 is a sixth-generation Small Block V8 intended for the 2027 Corvette Stingray, Grand Sport, and Grand Sport X. GM specifies 6.7 liters—409 cubic inches—along with 535 hp, 520 lb-ft, and a 13.0:1 compression ratio. GM calls the torque figure the highest for a naturally aspirated production V8; that is the automaker’s claim, not an independently verified ranking.

The LS6 is smaller in displacement than the LS7 but has higher published peak horsepower and torque. That does not establish that it is quicker or stronger in every driving condition: the figures are manufacturer ratings for different engines, vehicles, and eras, not results from a controlled, apples-to-apples test.
| Engine | Displacement | Published output | Role and context |
|---|---|---|---|
| LS7 | 7.0L / 427 cu in | 505 hp at 6,300 rpm; 470 lb-ft at 4,800 rpm | C6 Corvette Z06 and fifth-generation Camaro Z/28; also sold historically as a Chevrolet Performance crate engine |
| LS6 (2027) | 6.7L / 409 cu in | 535 hp; 520 lb-ft | Naturally aspirated engine for the 2027 Corvette Stingray, Grand Sport, and Grand Sport X |
LS7 figures are from GM Performance Parts’ 2011 catalog; LS6 figures are from GM’s 2026 announcement. GM’s published LS6 torque-peak rpm is not stated in that announcement, so the table does not imply matching measurement conditions.
How GM made the LS6 a 409
GM says the LS6 retains the LT2’s 103.25 mm bore but increases stroke from 92 mm to 100 mm. The longer stroke helps take the 6.2-liter LT2 architecture to 6.7 liters. GM also specifies a 13.0:1 compression ratio. The manufacturer’s technical deep dive connects the resulting 409-cubic-inch displacement to the historic 409.
That heritage reference fits GM’s stated design intent, but the LS6 is a modern engine for a new Corvette generation, not a revival of the original 409. Mike Kociba, assistant chief engineer for the Small Block, told GM News: “We’re trying to recreate some of what worked in the muscle-car era.”
How do you pick among the 2027 Corvette V8s?
GM’s 2027 lineup does not make the LS6 the replacement for every Corvette V8. It places three engines with distinct configurations and intended character in the range. The figures below are GM-published specifications; they are not independent test results.
| Engine | Configuration and displacement | Published output | Broad character |
|---|---|---|---|
| LS6 | 6.7L naturally aspirated V8 | 535 hp; 520 lb-ft | Large-displacement, naturally aspirated choice for Stingray, Grand Sport, and Grand Sport X |
| LT6 | 5.5L naturally aspirated V8 | 670 hp; 460 lb-ft | High-revving naturally aspirated option |
| LT7 | 5.5L twin-turbocharged V8 | 1,064 hp; 828 lb-ft | Turbocharged, highest-output option in GM’s published comparison |
GM’s June 5, 2026 Corvette engine overview describes the LT6 and LT7 figures as part of the 2027 engine range. The practical distinction is character as much as displacement: the LS6 emphasizes naturally aspirated torque and big-cube appeal, the LT6 pairs naturally aspirated power with a high-revving character, and the LT7 uses twin turbochargers for substantially higher stated output.

The sixth-generation Small Block also extends beyond Corvette
GM’s September 17, 2026 announcement names two other sixth-generation Small Block engines for next-generation light-duty Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks: the 5.7-liter L76 and 6.6-liter L78. These are separate engine codes and truck applications, not additional versions of the Corvette LS6. The announcement establishes the planned engines and applications; it does not provide a reason to treat the LS6 as a truck engine.
For builders looking for a new crate engine, Chevrolet Performance’s current crate-engine overview lists LS3 and LSX families among its LS/LSX options, as well as LT, small-block, big-block, and racing families. It does not list the Corvette LS6 as a crate engine. That page describes listed product families, not dealer inventory or local availability.
