Do High Gas Prices Bring EVs Back? What the Evidence Says

Higher gasoline prices can support EV demand, but the effect is moderate and conditional. Here is what U.S. surveys and research say about interest, sales, savings and the EV-versus-hybrid decision.

High gas prices can push some buyers toward electric vehicles, but they do not guarantee an EV sales comeback. Research finds a positive, generally moderate relationship between gasoline prices and battery-electric vehicle (BEV) demand. Whether that interest turns into purchases depends on how long prices stay high, the vehicle’s upfront cost, charging access, and the alternatives available to each buyer.

The latest U.S. evidence points to renewed attention, not a decisive shift: in a March 2026 survey, 32% of adults said they would seriously consider an EV as their next vehicle, compared with 44% for a hybrid. Those are stated preferences, not sales figures. And the gasoline price data below describe 2025, not prices at the time you read this in October 2026.

Do high gas prices make people buy electric cars?

They can influence the decision, but fuel is only one part of it. The Transportation Energy Institute (TEI), in an April 2026 synthesis of research from the United States, Europe and Canada, found that studies generally associate higher gasoline prices with higher BEV demand. TEI characterizes the effect as moderate and conditional on factors such as vehicle affordability, model availability, charging access and the duration of the price increase.

What the elasticity estimates mean

Across the studies it reviewed, TEI reports BEV demand elasticities to gasoline prices generally around 0.5 to 0.9. As an illustrative, all-else-equal translation, a 20% rise in gasoline prices would correspond to roughly 10% to 18% more BEV sales. This is a way to interpret the research synthesis, not a forecast for U.S. sales in 2026: other market conditions can change the outcome, and the relationship does not mean every gas-price increase produces that result.

For BEVs and conventional hybrids (HEVs) combined, TEI reports lower elasticity estimates, around 0.3 to 0.5. Estimates for HEVs alone can be lower or even negative in some reviewed studies. That variation is a reason not to assume that every increase in gas prices sends buyers toward the same kind of vehicle.

Why a correlation is not a sales forecast

TEI’s own historical U.S. calculations illustrate the difficulty of isolating fuel prices. Its annual gasoline-price correlations were positive for HEV and BEV sales, at 0.46 and 0.53 respectively. Its monthly correlations were negative: -0.66 for HEVs and -0.45 for BEVs. These simple correlations do not establish that fuel prices caused sales to rise or fall. Model launches, supply, prices, incentives, charging access and other conditions can move at the same time.

Does renewed interest show that EV sales are coming back?

Not by itself. Surveys measure what respondents say they might consider; sales data measure completed purchases. A higher gas bill may prompt people to search for EVs or rethink a future purchase before it changes what they buy.

What U.S. adults said in 2026

Pew Research Center surveyed 3,524 U.S. adults from March 16 to 22, 2026. Thirty-two percent said they would seriously consider an EV as their next vehicle, while 44% said the same of a hybrid. Pew described EV consideration as similar to the previous year but below the 42% recorded in 2022. The March 2026 result reflects stated consideration during a period Pew described as one of soaring gas prices and growing EV search interest; it does not show how many respondents went on to buy one.

The distinction matters when headlines describe a “comeback.” Search activity, survey interest, dealer inquiries, orders and completed sales are different measures, and one does not automatically predict the next. The survey figures show that EVs remain under consideration, while hybrids appealed to a larger share of respondents in that question.

How quickly prices may change behavior

TEI says gasoline-price spikes lasting less than six months are more likely to affect awareness, search and stated intent than completed purchases. Increases sustained for six to 18 months are more likely to influence purchase behavior. Even then, only a fraction of consumers replace a vehicle in any given year, so a change in interest can take time to show up in sales.

How much have gasoline prices varied?

The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s January 2026 report puts the 2025 national average for regular gasoline at $3.10 per gallon, 21 cents below the 2024 average. During 2025, the national average reached $3.24 in early April and fell to $2.81 in late December. Annual averages also varied by region, from $2.39 per gallon on the Gulf Coast to $4.32 on the West Coast.

These are historical figures, not a current October 2026 price quote. They show why a national average may not match a driver’s experience, and why the effect of fuel prices on an individual EV decision depends on local costs and the buyer’s driving.

Will an EV save you money when gas prices rise?

It might, especially if you drive enough and can charge at home at a favorable electricity rate, but gas prices alone cannot answer the question. A fair comparison uses the cost of buying and operating each vehicle under your circumstances. The available studies do not provide an individualized total-cost calculation.

Compare the costs that apply to your household

  • Purchase price and model choice: Compare vehicles you would actually consider, including their upfront prices. The International Energy Agency’s Global EV Outlook 2026 reports that the U.S. average retail price of a BEV fell nearly 2% in 2025, while limited availability of lower-cost models continued to weigh on price competitiveness.
  • Annual driving: Estimate how many miles you expect to drive. More miles mean greater exposure to gasoline costs for a gasoline car or hybrid, but savings still depend on the energy costs and purchase prices on both sides of the comparison.
  • Fuel and electricity prices where you live: Use your local gasoline price and the electricity rate that would apply to your charging. A national gas average cannot substitute for either figure.
  • Charging access and installation: If you have dedicated parking and can charge at home, check what installation would require and cost. If you rely on public charging, consider its location, convenience and price for the routes you use.
  • Trips and charging practicality: Match the vehicle to your usual driving and longer trips. Include range and access to charging on the journeys you actually make.
  • Purchase timing: Account for any incentives only after verifying that they are available to you under current rules. Their availability is not established here.

Plug In America’s 2026 EV-driver survey found that 91% of surveyed EV drivers agreed they save money driving an EV. That is a response from people who already drive EVs, not a representative estimate of savings for every prospective buyer. The same survey points to inexpensive home charging as an important incentive, but your own result depends on your purchase, driving and charging costs.

Should you choose an EV, a hybrid or a gasoline car?

High fuel prices can make lower gasoline use more attractive, but they do not settle which vehicle fits best. Use the same decision factors for each option rather than comparing fuel spending alone.

Factor Battery-electric vehicle Hybrid Gasoline vehicle
Upfront price and model availability Compare the specific BEV’s price; lower-cost model availability remains a U.S. competitiveness constraint, according to the IEA’s 2026 outlook. Compare the specific model’s price; the cited evidence does not establish a general price advantage over BEVs or gasoline vehicles. Compare the specific model’s price; the cited evidence does not establish a general price advantage over BEVs or hybrids.
Charging circumstances Consider home charging access, installation needs or reliance on public charging. Charging access can shape adoption. Does not require plugging in for the conventional HEV category discussed in TEI’s demand research; the cited evidence does not compare individual models’ charging needs. Does not require plugging in; the cited evidence does not compare individual models’ operating costs.
Exposure to gasoline prices Does not use gasoline for driving, so gasoline prices do not directly set its driving-energy cost; electricity costs still matter. Uses gasoline, so fuel prices remain relevant. TEI finds varied HEV demand responses across reviewed studies. Uses gasoline, so fuel prices directly affect the cost of driving.
Trip and refueling considerations Assess range, charging convenience and the charging options on your regular routes and longer trips. Assess your routes and gasoline costs; AAA’s 2025 survey measured reported concerns about EV long-distance suitability and public charging, not a model-by-model comparison. Assess your routes and gasoline costs; the cited evidence does not establish a universal trip advantage over the other options.

The table describes decision factors, not a ranking: the sources do not establish a universal price or cost winner across vehicle models and households. Pew’s March 2026 survey found more U.S. adults would seriously consider a hybrid than an EV, but that preference measure does not establish which option would cost less or suit a particular driver.

What could keep a gas-price surge from changing the market?

A fuel-price increase has less power to shift purchases if buyers cannot afford the vehicles they want, cannot charge conveniently, or are not ready to replace a car. Reported concerns also help explain why greater interest may not immediately become a sale.

Purchase price and repair concerns

In AAA’s 2025 survey, 16% of U.S. adults said they were likely or very likely to purchase a fully electric vehicle as their next car. The survey was fielded March 6–10, 2025, among 1,128 adults; its stated margin of error was ±4 percentage points overall at 95% confidence. AAA’s question differs from Pew’s, so the two percentages should not be treated as a direct trend comparison. In the AAA survey, 62% cited high battery repair costs and 59% cited purchase price as barriers to going fully electric. Those are reported perceptions, not measurements of the objective cost or frequency of repairs.

Charging and trip concerns

AAA respondents also commonly reported concerns about long-distance travel suitability, public-charger convenience and vehicle range. The survey captures people’s stated barriers; it does not test the actual severity of each barrier for every route or model. Charging access is also identified as relevant to adoption in TEI’s synthesis and in a National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) publication issued in January 2026. NIST summarizes a peer-reviewed study based on survey data from 1,443 U.S. residents collected in 2023 and reports differences among BEV-only, mixed-fuel and non-adopter groups, alongside persistent informational and psychological barriers. It offers context on adoption patterns, not an update on 2026 sales.

What to watch for before calling it a comeback

A sustained sales change would be stronger evidence of a comeback than a burst of searches or an increase in stated interest. To judge whether high gas prices are shifting the market, look for several signals together:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Whether gasoline prices remain elevated long enough to affect buyers who are nearing a vehicle replacement.
  • Whether EV purchase prices and available lower-cost models make the alternatives realistic for more households.
  • Whether home or public charging is practical for the buyers and routes involved.
  • Whether actual BEV sales and sales mix change, rather than relying on survey interest or search activity alone.

TEI’s April 2026 analysis described the early-2026 fuel shock as likely to raise consideration and modestly shift the sales mix, while making the lasting effect dependent on the duration of the shock, affordability, policy and incentives, and charging rollout. That was a time-bounded assessment, not a statement about gasoline prices or sales in October 2026.
