Is Kia discontinuing the Kia Soul?

Why is Kia discontinuing the Soul?
Kia did not name a single cause. Its announcement looked back on the Soul’s role in establishing the brand in the U.S. and described Kia’s expanding utility-vehicle lineup. That frames the retirement as a portfolio decision, but does not establish the company’s internal reasoning or say that a particular model will directly replace the Soul.
Kia Vice President of Sales Eric Watson said, “The Soul was one of the cornerstones in Kia gaining a foothold in the United States and this one-of-a-kind vehicle – and the marketing supporting it – helped Kia move to where it resides today.” The statement emphasizes the car’s legacy rather than identifying a specific trigger for ending production.

Did falling sales cause the Soul’s retirement?
Kia reported 50,133 Soul sales in the U.S. in 2025, compared with 52,397 in 2024—a decline of 2,264 vehicles, or about 4.3%. That is a modest year-over-year drop, not evidence of a collapse, and Kia did not cite it as the reason for discontinuation. Kia America’s 2025 annual sales release
The same release reported 852,155 total Kia America vehicle sales in 2025, up 7% year over year, alongside records for SUVs and electrified models. Those results help explain the broader portfolio context, but they do not show that the Soul’s sales decline—or growth in another category—caused Kia’s decision.

What the Soul’s run meant to Kia
Kia said more than 1.5 million Souls had been sold in the U.S. since 2009, describing the model as a cornerstone in the brand’s U.S. foothold. Its retirement closes a long-running chapter for a car Kia itself characterized as one of a kind. The announcement’s emphasis was on that legacy and the company’s wider utility-vehicle lineup, not on a named successor.
Are emissions rules, costs, or electrification the reason?
Kia’s announcement did not attribute the retirement to emissions regulations, production costs, electrification, or another specific constraint. Without an attributable statement or other evidence, those explanations should be treated as unverified rather than fact. Kia’s reference to an expanding utility-vehicle lineup is relevant context, not confirmation of any one cause.
What existing Soul owners should know
The retirement announcement concerns the end of new Soul production; it does not itself say that existing vehicles can no longer be serviced. Owners should consult Kia or a dealer for model-year- and trim-specific parts, maintenance, and warranty questions. Confirm fitment before buying accessories or replacement parts, since compatibility can vary by year and trim.
