For the 2026 lineup, Subaru lists the gas Crosstrek from $26,995 and the Crosstrek Hybrid from $33,995. Subaru says the Hybrid offers up to 38% better city fuel economy than gas models and up to 597 miles per tank. These are manufacturer figures, not guaranteed results for every driver or route. Compare the EPA ratings for the exact trims, local transaction prices, equipment, fuel prices, annual mileage, and how much of your driving is in the city before deciding whether the Hybrid’s higher listed starting price makes sense. The updated moderate-overlap result applies to 2024–2025 vehicles built after February 2024, so a model-year label alone does not settle which result applies to a car you are considering. IIHS’s 2026 information describes changes to rear passenger seat belts and the addition of a rear side thorax airbag; applicability of updated ratings differs between gas and Hybrid versions. - Confirm the exact version: Note the model year, trim, powertrain, and build date, especially when comparing safety ratings.
- Check recalls by VIN: The Associated Press reported in July 2026 that certain 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid vehicles were included in a label recall for an inaccurate gross axle weight rating. The reported remedy is a corrected certification label; the issue is not described as a mechanical defect, and it does not mean every Crosstrek is affected. Use NHTSA’s VIN recall lookup or Subaru’s recall lookup and confirm whether any remedy is complete. Recall status can change.
- Inspect for the specific owner-reported annoyances: On a used vehicle, ask about battery replacement or electrical faults and check the rear hatch area and spare-tire well for signs of water. A clean inspection does not guarantee future reliability, but it can help identify existing concerns.
