The Kalmar 9X9 Is More Than a Coachbuilt Porsche 911

The Kalmar 9X9 is a bespoke Porsche-based performance car with three configurations, extensive chassis engineering, and a Nürburgring figure based on simulation—not a verified lap.

The Kalmar 9X9 is a bespoke, Porsche-based performance car—not simply a 911 with a new body. KALMAR calls it a “retro hypercar” and says it combines a Porsche 993 chassis and a rigid spaceframe with selected contemporary 992 running gear, extensive bespoke engineering, and three distinct configurations. Its power, weight, and performance figures are manufacturer claims; the much-discussed Nürburgring time was based on simulation, not a verified timed lap.

What is the Kalmar 9X9?

The 9X9 is a low-volume car built around a Porsche 993 chassis, according to KALMAR Automotive. The company says it adds a rigid spaceframe and selected running gear from contemporary 992 models, with the specific setup varying by version. KALMAR describes each car as tailored to its customer, including differences in design and driving characteristics.

Founder Jan Kalmar has called the project a tribute to the Porsche 959. At its 2024 global debut, he described it as a “retro hypercar”: a new interpretation of a classic Porsche-based sports-car idea, developed with modern engineering. That is the company’s framing, rather than an independent vehicle classification.

Is the Kalmar 9X9 a Porsche 911?

It is Porsche-based, but it is not best understood as a standard 911 with coachbuilt panels. KALMAR identifies the 993 as the chassis foundation and says the car uses selected 992 running gear; it does not establish one specific 911 donor model as the source for every build. The 9X9 is a bespoke project with its own structure, suspension, bodywork, and configuration choices.

It is also not the Porsche 911 Dakar. The Dakar is a separate Porsche model, not the 9X9’s donor or an equivalent version.

What is the difference between the 9X9, Sport, and Leichtbau?

KALMAR presents three versions aimed at different priorities: long-distance GT performance, greater manual involvement, and low-weight naturally aspirated driving. The following specifications are from the manufacturer; the headline figures for the displayed cars were published in KALMAR’s 2024 launch announcement.

Version Engine and output Transmission and driven wheels Character and trade-offs
9X9 3.8-litre turbo; KALMAR’s 2024 announcement gave 930 hp for the car shown. The current product overview describes the version as producing more than 900 hp. Dual-clutch transmission; active all-wheel drive. The comfort- and GT-focused configuration, with the strongest published output figure.
9X9 Sport 3.0-litre turbo; 650 hp in KALMAR’s 2024 announcement. Seven-speed manual; variable all-wheel drive. A more driver-focused choice, trading some of the standard 9X9’s outright power for manual involvement.
9X9 Leichtbau Naturally aspirated 4.0-litre engine; KALMAR’s 2024 announcement gave a weight of 1,250 kg for the shown version. Output is not stated in the cited launch announcement. Six-speed manual; rear-wheel drive. Low-weight, naturally aspirated setup with comfort equipment removed.

The figures describe KALMAR’s published specifications, not independent measurements. The company says each build can be tailored, so buyers should confirm the specification and equipment of the particular car rather than assume every example is identical.

Why it is more than a coachbuilt body

Coachbuilding usually foregrounds the body’s design and construction. KALMAR’s account of the 9X9 also describes substantial changes to the car’s structure, chassis systems, and controls. The company says the specification includes:

  • Carbon-fibre bodywork and a rigid spaceframe built around the 993 chassis.
  • A bespoke double-wishbone pushrod front axle, adaptive dampers, and adjustable ride height.
  • A ground-effect underbody and magnesium wheels.
  • Ceramic brake discs and 3D-printed titanium brake calipers.
  • OEM stability management, traction control, and ABS.

These are manufacturer-described features, and the exact configuration depends on the version. Together they explain why the 9X9 is presented as an engineered performance car rather than a styling exercise alone.

How much horsepower does the Kalmar 9X9 have?

KALMAR’s 2024 launch announcement quoted 930 hp for the displayed 3.8-litre turbo 9X9 and 650 hp for the 3.0-litre turbo Sport. Its current product overview describes the standard 9X9 as making more than 900 hp. The Leichtbau uses a naturally aspirated 4.0-litre engine, but the cited launch announcement does not give its output. Because these numbers are manufacturer-published and builds may be tailored, they should not be treated as independent test results or a guarantee for every car.

What did KALMAR claim about Nürburgring performance?

KALMAR’s 2024 announcement said full-size simulations indicated a seven-minute Nürburgring lap and reported peak downforce of 1,450 kg. The seven-minute figure was a simulation-based claim, not a reported independently timed lap or verified record.

In a KALMAR-hosted excerpt from a MAGNETO feature whose original publication date is not stated, Jan Kalmar said the goal was to beat the Porsche 918 Spyder’s quoted 6min 57sec Nürburgring Nordschleife time and added, “We’re quite confident we’re there.” He also said, “We fail if we do not exceed what they achieved 40 years ago.” Those remarks express the founder’s ambition and confidence; they do not establish a measured 9X9 lap.

Is the 9X9 homologated, and can it be registered where I live?

KALMAR’s current product page says the 9X9 homologation is in place for the EU. Its 2024 launch announcement used the more forward-looking wording that EU-compliant homologation was “prepared.” Neither statement establishes automatic registration in every country or for every individual build. Anyone considering a purchase should confirm the vehicle’s approval documentation and registration route with the relevant local authorities and dealer.

How many will be made, and how can buyers inquire?

KALMAR’s product page states a production plan of nine cars per model line. The page does not date that figure, so it should be understood as the company’s stated plan rather than confirmation of completed production or current build-slot availability.

KALMAR’s 2024 announcement directed sales inquiries to selected regional dealers: Canepa Group in North America, DK Engineering in Great Britain, My Garage A/S in Scandinavia, Jan B. Lühn for Western Europe and the Gulf region, and Wearnes-StarChase in Southeast Asia. The manufacturer’s reviewed pages do not publish a price or confirm present delivery dates or available build slots.

What does ownership support include?

KALMAR says its dealer network handles normal service and that the company offers fly-out maintenance for larger jobs away from a dealer. The product page also describes an optional two-day track handover with the factory driver and test team. Buyers should confirm which services apply to their region and specific car.
