The orange 1994 Toyota Supra MK IV driven by Brian O’Conner in 2001’s The Fast and the Furious became one of the franchise’s defining cars. Toyota identifies Craig Lieberman as the original owner of the primary hero car: producers found his Supra, then brought him in to advise on the film’s tuner cars and automotive details. The movie’s distinctive orange-and-graphics livery helped make the car instantly recognizable, while the Supra’s 2JZ-powered tuner reputation made it a natural fit for the story.
What car did Brian drive in the first Fast & Furious?
It was a 1994 fourth-generation Toyota Supra MK IV, chassis family JZA80. The car was associated with Brian O’Conner, played by Paul Walker, in the original 2001 film. Toyota Australia describes the movie car as a 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six 2JZ-GTE Supra.
The on-screen identity was not just the model badge or engine. Toyota Australia identifies its finish as Lamborghini Diablo Candy Orange pearl, with “Nuclear Gladiator” graphics by Troy Lee Designs. That vivid combination became the look many fans recognize and later sought to reproduce. A replica’s appearance or parts, however, do not establish that it was one of the film-used cars.
How Craig Lieberman’s Supra reached the film
In a 2021 Toyota USA Newsroom interview, the publisher identifies Craig Lieberman as the original owner of the film’s primary hero vehicle. Lieberman recalls that in December 2000, while the film was then called Red Line, someone approached him at a car show and asked him to bring his yellow Supra to Universal.

Lieberman says the production subsequently asked for his help finding desirable tuner cars and advising on builds, decals, and automotive dialogue. His account explains a real-world route by which his car and expertise entered the production. Toyota’s identification applies to the primary hero car; it does not mean every car used for interior, exterior, or stunt work was his.
Why the Supra fit the movie
Toyota’s history of the model links the fourth-generation Supra Turbo’s popularity with tuners to its 2JZ engine. Toyota says highly modified Supra builds helped inspire the car featured in the 2001 film. The movie’s 2JZ-GTE—described by Toyota Australia as a 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six—connected the screen car to the tuning culture the story portrayed.

The look mattered just as much to its lasting recognition. Toyota Australia credits the orange pearl finish and Troy Lee Designs graphics with the car’s signature visual identity, and says the movie became a reference point for fans replicating its appearance. The available descriptions do not establish that every replica, or every production car, used an identical mechanical setup.
Why “the movie Supra” may mean more than one car
A film car seen on screen is not necessarily the same physical vehicle in every shot. Motor Authority’s June 21, 2021 report says the 1994 Supra that later sold at auction had been used for interior and exterior shots, then repurposed as Slap Jack’s Supra in 2 Fast 2 Furious. The report says that car retained its factory 2JZ-GTE and had a four-speed automatic, even though a manual transmission was depicted on screen.

That distinction matters when discussing ownership, specifications, and sale prices: the primary hero car, another film-used car, and a replica should not be treated as interchangeable. The cited accounts do not establish that the Supra reported sold in 2015 and the car reported sold in 2021 were the same physical vehicle.

Reports of the 2021 auction differ according to whether they include fees. Toyota Australia reported a sale price of $550,000 USD. Motor Authority reported a $500,000 hammer price plus $60,000 in auction fees, or $560,000 including those fees. Those are differently stated totals, so neither should be repeated as an unqualified single price.
