The car is the McMurtry Spéirling, an electric hyper track car whose underbody fans create suction to hold it against a surface—even at a standstill. On 10 April 2025, a prototype moved forward upside down on a purpose-built rotating platform. The feat was real, but brief: it was not a road drive or a completed tunnel run.
How did the Spéirling drive upside down?
McMurtry drove the prototype up a ramp onto a purpose-built platform, which rotated to turn the car upside down. Fans beneath the chassis drew air from a sealed area under the car, creating lower pressure there. That pressure difference pulled the vehicle toward the platform strongly enough to keep it attached while the driver moved forward.
Unlike conventional wings, which need airflow generated by the car’s movement to produce aerodynamic downforce, the fan system can generate downforce at zero road speed. McMurtry says the system can produce up to 2,000 kg of downforce; that is the company’s claim, not an independently measured figure in the available reporting. McMurtry’s demonstration account and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers’ explanation describe the fan-and-pressure principle.
How far did it travel upside down?
The Institution of Mechanical Engineers reports that the inverted movement lasted about seven seconds and covered roughly half the car’s length. The demonstration showed the prototype could stay attached to a purpose-built surface while moving a short distance. It did not establish that the car can routinely drive upside down on a road or that it completed a long tunnel run.

Could it drive through a tunnel upside down?
A longer inverted track or a suitable tunnel could, in principle, let the car travel farther, but that was described as a future possibility—not a completed test. Thomas Yates, McMurtry co-founder and managing director, called the stunt “an exciting proof of concept using a small purpose-built rig” and said it was “perhaps just the beginning of what’s possible,” as quoted by Top Gear on 11 April 2025.
What is the production McMurtry Spéirling PURE like?
McMurtry announced the final production form of the Spéirling PURE on 2 July 2026. The company describes it as a single-seat electric hyper track car with 95% new components compared with prototype models. Its announced specifications are manufacturer claims:
